This past weekend, I finally experienced the work of Jean-Michel Basquiat at the Brant Foundation Center. I loved that the space is located in #EastVillage where #Basquiat spent a lot of his time. There’s so much to see and feel. So many layers to his work that you can literally spend a lengthy amount of time on one piece trying to uncode it. Trying to reimagine what Jean was going through to get to this final work of art. Did he throw the paint on the paper or did he use a certain technique? What was he thinking when he wrote Papa Doc and Rome on the same canvas? Why did he paint that wood gold and not silver? What’s with the faces? His work will always leave me wondering. Wishing that I could have met him and asked him some questions. Wondering about his courage to be an artist in all creative forms instead of the typical #Haitian path. I acknowledge that I haven’t lived in Atlanta since October 2011. I recognize that certain elements of the Atlanta culture scene is slowly withering away and I can’t physically be there to lobby for its preservation. However, Atlanta made me. And what I can do is fly to ATL and use my voice. Use my voice to stir up a conversation about the changes. To pour into the community and that poured into me. So I am honored to facilitate and be part of the “change in Atlanta’s cultural landscape” discussion. With Apache closing and the lack of affordable venues in central locations that allows independent artists to perform for an audience, it’s time we start thinking about what’s next. What an amazing and provocative story of #Frida that Florida Grand Opera brought to life! I actually think the opera was better than the movie that I watched. I had to stand on my seat for Catalina Cuervo who played Frida Khalo and Ricardo Herrera who played Diego Rivera and also made his debut. They absolutely embodied Frida and Diego and did so through acting AND song. Their voices were incredible. I can’t stop thinking of this experience and so thankful that my sister @she_curates got us tickets. Amazing work to the entire cast and production crew. I bow to the composer Robert Xavier Rodriquez, what a great score. I really hope they bring this to NY. Especially while @brooklynmuseum is running the Frida exhibit.
