The line that Soda can put just about anyone to sleep, implies that Ponyboy has seen Soda put multiple people to sleep. We know that for Darry it’s Soda’s back rubs, but what about everyone else.

Ponyboy, who is only able to sleep because Soda shares a bed with him. Even with all the aspirin Pony takes, it’s Soda’s arm swung sleepily across him, Soda’s mere presence, that reassures him that if he has a nightmare he won’t have to wake up alone.

Sandy, who falls asleep on Soda’s shoulder because when she leans against him he goes more still and calm than anyone would think him capable of; staring down at her mesmerized like he’s trying to freeze the moment in time, stroking her hair softly enough to remind her that there’s still gentleness in Tulsa.

Steve, who’s treated to a full body tackle when he crashes on the Curtis couch, Soda playfully refusing to move from his position as human weighted blanket until Steve gives up and goes to sleep. Soda pretends he’s doing it to annoy him, because he knows Steve would die before admitting that touch and weight soothes him, and because the best antidote to a home he gets kicked out of is a home he couldn’t escape if he tried.

Johnny, who sometimes gets skittish at physical touch, so Soda sticks to talking. He just starts rambling about whatever, his animated voice just a few subtle notes softer and lower and less excitable than usual, keeping Johnny company while taking the focus off of him; taking off all the pressure for Johnny to interact or take up any space in order to be given it, and letting him just be.

Two-Bit, whose beer Soda replaces with water at the point before sleepy drunk becomes sick drunk, when he can still get a good night’s sleep, entertaining him with jokes and stories and getting him buzzed on friendship instead of booze.

Of course, Ponyboy says Soda can put “almost anyone to sleep.” Unsurprisingly, Dally is the exception. Soda’s tried, inconspicuously watching tv when Dally crashes on the couch, but Dally just waits him out until Soda’s the one who falls asleep on the floor. Only then does Dally let himself relax, because maybe he sleeps better when someone he trusts is close by, but he would never be vulnerable enough to let himself be “put to sleep.” Which is why Soda fakes sleep, and why he never lets Dally or Pony or anyone else figure it out.

Steve is so insecure about his teeth like to a point he covered his mouth with his hand when laughing or smiling

y’know, that’s funny cause i’ve only seen one picture of steve smiling (like actually like—a toothy smile) before and i had to scowled tumblr for it

could totally see that though—i kinda headcanon him to have a snaggletooth and a bit of an overbite (i used to have both of those, not fun) and his died tried to get him braces but they weren’t doing a thing. there was a few months where steve had to wear headgear to try to fix it and it jsut…didn’t work. the braces came off early and they were kinda sorta semi fixed but like also not really at all. he used to get called snaggletooth a lot when he was little. but you’re so right and i love that so much

if we wanna get a hit fluffy, sometimes soda will move his hand cause “i wanna se eyou smile if you’re laughin’ at me” and it makes him feel a bit better. i love this so much

WHAT IM SAYINGGGGGG steve was all “i wanna practice for when evie and i get married” (sure buddy) but then he ended up actually enjoying it for some reason. they still “practice” with each other, but they’ve mastered it by now. of course they have.

yeah idk i hated the sketch of this drawing, loved the middle of the process, hated the finishing product. THIS DRAWING WAS A PAIN IN MYYYY ASSS I'll tell you that much.

i actually do quite still prefer the middle of the process, so here's an uncolored & non-background version of it:

i tried lighting for the second time in ever and it was way better than last time but also? i just could not get it to be the right colors for the LIFE of me. i think that's mainly why I'm not so fond of it — simply because of colors.

i do really really love this drawing of these two though, they're so ridiculously adorable

i kind of based this vibe off of the sodablog birthday post for steve, and then just kind of ran into a whole different scene with it. i like this one a lot, my brain likes to tell me that Steve just loves confessing his love to Soda whenever he's intoxicated. everryyyy singgleeeee timeeeee.

anyways who knows maybe I'll try and redo this drawing, but as for now GRRRR... GRRRR I HATE IT... first time in a while where I've actually been so displeased with a drawing i debated on scrapping it 😭

i really do love the scene though which makes me so upset because i WISH i could love this drawing, it's just so... idk man , I'm just hoping it'll grow on me </3

i did not have much to say on this drawing aside from fuckthis fuckthis and fuckthis, it had to be finished eventually (it's been sat in my ibis gallery for a week now, 8 days to be exact)

also I'd like to shout out @ broareweabouttoviberightnow for introducing me to the song that's in the main section, love love that song and it had lyrics fitting enough to the scene, i had to pick SOMETHING else other than salad days by mac demarco; i tend to typically just pick songs stuck in my head when i don't have a clue on what to put there, but that song came in clutch !!!

Darry Curtis Headcanons

Darry is a reader at a level to rival Ponyboy

He reads all sorts of books, and is an avid enjoyer of romance (but you could not waterboard that information out of him)

Darry absolutely HATES history with a burning passion

In a modern day high school au, you would regularly see him crashing out over APUSH tests

When he was real little, from the time after Soda was born until he and Darry could actually talk to each other, Darry wanted a parrot because he wanted somebody to talk to that wasn’t his parents

This also happened to coincide with his pirate phase

y’know, kill two birds with one stone

He still thinks birds that can talk are pretty neat, especially crows

He absolutely loves baseball

Darry played all through his school years before quitting after his freshman year to focus on football (if he hadn’t played football, he would have 100% played baseball)

That man is MOISTURIZED. If he does not put lotion on after every single shower, his skin literally hurts

He and Ponyboy share that in common

Darry also cannot draw for shit

He loves playing cards, and he has a great poker face

He eats his s’mores with a Reese’s instead of Hershey’s

Darry would sleep ridiculously late on the weekends in high school, unless he had plans

He has always been a ridiculously deep sleeper. There could be a tornado actively blowing the house apart and he still would not wake up

But he only needs one alarm in the morning

HOWEVER. If anybody speaks to him in the half an hour after he has woken up, he will not respond and will look at them with murder eyes

Has really neat penmanship, but in the way that a lot of men do, where lowercase letters look like uppercase letters, just smaller

In later years, he is a really big fan of Billy Joel, Jim Croce, and the Eagles

Darry is absolutely petrified of heights

He has a really nice singing voice, and he often sings along with the radio or record player
