Well, kiddies, it was 22 years ago today…. Flanked here by our best men, Blitz and Barry. Elegant. Unflappable. Loyal as the day is long. Then, (can I have the next slide please?) after the ceremony, in the receiving line with our dear friends Sev and Lisa Jo. The last shot, (next slide?), at the reception, is sweet in how it captures so many different friends from so many different eras of my life. Kaufman in the front left, who grew up down the street from me. Joe to his right, my roommate and coworker in San Francisco. Melissa in the middle, who I shared an office with at Michigan Radio in Ann Arbor. H.T. Behind her, who grew up just over the fence behind our house. And waaaayy in the back, the one and only Matthew McC. of Portland, Ore., husband of the fabulous Tanya Z., my old friend and neighbor from Chicago. A new “spell painting” I just finished (for myself) along with one I did for Colleen several years ago. They now hang together in our boudoir, where we see them first thing in the morning and last thing at night. It’s kind of like a vision board, but made with more energy. Mine’s loaded with harmony, helpful goddesses, animals, birds, trees, role models, a bungalow, etc. Colleen gets music, peace, socializing, good luck, love, and… big dogs. All right, tonight’s the NCAA men’s finals and I promised some more favorite NYC places to watch the game. Here’s one in each borough. Lee’s Tavern in Staten Island. Great old bar, cold local (and macro) beer, and my favorite pizza in town. Forest Hills Station House in Queens. Many TVs, easy train access, and some of the best pub grub I’ve ever had. Harlem Tavern, Manhattan. Best room to watch sports in NYC that I’ve found. Great crowd, wonderful food tons o’ elbow room, and big screens all the way around. The Kettle Black, Brooklyn. Two rooms, lotsa TVs, and some of the best chicken wings in Amurka. (Don’t believe me? “Food & Wine” mag sez top FIVE.) The Bronx Alehouse, Bronx. (Duh) Perfect in every way it needs to be for our purpose tonight: righteous TVs, food, and beer in a large-but-cozy room. 👍👍 Of course, I could go on. There’s a thousand great places to watch the game. (Sadly, not Cody’s any more, our local sports bar of choice. Shoot, even Colleen loved it. RIP, Cody’s….) Recently spotted as I was watching Broad City — a print I did a while back called “Dog vs. Hat,” a tribute to Monopoly game battles royale in the style of a classic boxing poster. (Prints still available via the blah-blah in the blah👆) The top hat was my favored token. (Of course; what am I, a farmer?) That tough little Scottie dog was chosen by others. The games were fierce. Occasionally, Top Hat prevailed. Other times, well…. Why was it on Broad City? Because the production team wanted to populate the show with Brooklyn-made art, which was cool of them. So they bought some of mine. A throwback Tuesday here, if you will, to a week ago down in New Orleans. Mardi Gras 2022, and man, it was — how you say? — “a humdinger.” Perfect weather and a whole city (nation, really) primed to the gills for a party. With Covid cases having dropped like a rock, the timing was perfect We stayed pretty much on the Marigny/Bywater side of town, traipsing along with the St. Anne’s parade (and the always-fabulous @shelleysather), dipping into the French Quarter to say hey to our friends there, then popping in for a visit with @cmradio.tv in his Marigny lair — which is kind of a carnival in its own right and should someday be the subject of a documentary film, but I digress. All in all, a deliriously gorgeous day, highlighted by Burning Man-level creativity, beauty, set and setting. If you go to Mardi Gras, consider basing your experience in parts of town other than the Quarter. Also? Costume up, bitches.
