unmourned is an upcoming interactive fiction game in twine that is a retelling of the classic Frankenstein tale. How you treat the Creature will shape your lives and the fates of all those around you.
Tumblr media
You are V. Frankenstein, a science prodigy with an ambitious streak a mile wide. The eldest child of the Frankenstein family, you went to university to further your understanding of the world, and made a name for yourself as a hard-working innovator and radical thinker. Unsatisfied with the academia-approved learnings your teachers saught to instill upon you, you’ve instead turned your attention to a goal more suited to your ambitions: discovering the secret of life.
After spending the better part of a year perfecting your craft and selecting the finest speciments for your experiment, you succeed in doing what none thought possible — you’ve reanimated a body carefully pieced together from multiple corpses. Now, it’s time to face the consequences of your actions.
Tumblr media
The Creature (m/f/nb): The poor wretch you’ve violently brought to life. The Creature seems to be intelligent and prone to compassion  — but whether they’ll stay true to their instincts will depend on your treatment of them.
Hen Clerval (m/f/nb): Your closest friend and confidante since childhood. You both share an ambitious streak and an innate curiosity, although those traits manifest themselves differently in the two of you. They’re always willing to help you out of trouble, if you’ll let them.
Elizabeth Lavenza (f): The woman your father wishes you to wed, whom you’ve known since your teenage years. She’s a joyful woman who feels everything deeply, and she’s been your most loyal correspondent during your years away at university. Her compassion and desire to help is both her strength and her weakness.
Robert Walton (m): An Artic explorer and veteran sea captain. He has a desire to explore the world and a wistfulness about him you can’t pinpoint. He is currently on the trail of a passage through the North Pole, but you can’t help but feel that’s not all he’s searching for.
Tumblr media
Customize your character - gender, pronouns, appearance, motivations.
Romance, befriend or make enemies of the four main companions
Watch how the people around you respond to your actions  — everyone has their own opinions about your treatment of the Creature
Choose how you treat the Creature: will you act as a benevolent mentor? A distant friend? A ruthless master? Or will you even try to teach them how to love? Just beware  — all paths come with their own consequences.
DEMO: To be announced!
Character portraits: Coming soon!

i’m so in love with domestic sweetness.
cooking dinner with the one you love while they wrap their arms around you. taking quick kiss breaks in between folding fresh laundry. washing each other’s hair in the shower. giggling and rolling around in the fresh sheets you both just finished putting on. dusting while showing off your latest dance moves and having your sweetheart show off their vocals.
it’s so comforting to have someone that you just enjoy making a home with. because chores done with someone you love isn’t such a chore after all.

Peony and sage for Merrill?
Hi Ophis :D
Peony: Just answered!
Sage: What is your muse’s legacy?  What do they want to be remembered for, and what might they actually be remembered for?
This is interesting, especially because Merrill is such a lowkey person in general.  He doesn’t particularly want or need his name in any history books or anything, but he hopes that, at least in other people’s minds, that he’s remembered as a good person.  That’s all he wants. As for what he’ll actually be remembered for... most ordinary people will remember him for this reason.  But in history... for once, I can actually say SPOILERS muahaha XD
~
Thanks so much for the ask!

peeony and lavender for Merrill please?
Peony: What would a ‘happy life’ look like in your muse’s eyes?
Merrill is very much a homebody, and his opinion of a ‘happy life’ was very much colored by his grandfathers -- just, a very calm, domestic life, lazy mornings and listening to records in the parlor, cooking together and eating at the kitchen table, etc.  And working together as a team at GSG.  He doesn’t need big grand adventures.
Lavender: How easy is it to gain your muse’s trust?  Once their trust is broken, how might one go about mending it?
Listen, Merrill’s role on Discord is literally ‘Pspspsps come on out’.  It takes a while to earn his trust, but generally being kind and understanding will get you a long way with him.  And food.  He is easily swayed by food.  As for regaining trust... it depends on what MC did.  Once his trust in them is formed, it takes a lot to break it.  But if it is broken... it’ll take a lot of time proving they deserve to have it back.  A conscious effort.
~
Thanks so much for the ask!

Uh, sorry for radio silence, folks, I... severely overestimated my attention span 😅 things'll probably be a touch quieter for a while, I have a handful of things coming up soon irl, but I am working on your asks/prompts and some of those should be up in just a bit!
I'll try to keep up, and I love getting your questions!! And, as always, you can find me on the Discord, I do take questions there as well. If there's anything you guys wanna know for worldbuilding, about the other NPCs, or anything else, the ask box is always open!!
Again, sorry for the radio silence, I'll try to be better!

Happy Asian & Pacific Islander Heritage Month!
To celebrate this month we wanted to put together a feature on Asian and Pacific Islander authors. This month, you’ll see interviews from these authors about their inspiration for their projects, what they’re most excited about for readers, and how their identities influence their work.
If you yourself are of Asian or Pacific Islander heritage and would like your story featured, let us know! We will be putting together a separate rec list post including these stories and any new ones we get!
This Month’s Featured Authors
Tumblr media
Parkerlyn, author of The Nameless
Legend goes when the world was formed, the mortal races, mortalis, were created with the gift of magic. But as time passed their hubris grew, and the sheevra were created to curb their pride.
When it comes to these chaotic and malevolent beings, the lands are full of cautionary tales. Though some would tell you that the stories are just that. To them, names have no power. There are no mysterious deals to fear, and the figure who seduces you into an alley at midnight is certainly no malicious spirit.
Which luckily for you means easy prey.

Cer, author of Snakeroot
There is something wrong beyond the trees. A curse infects these lands. They call it the Rot, a curse that distorts the lands and creatures around it. For years, its tide has been stemmed by magical barriers, dutifully enforced by hunters. For years, the strategy has worked… until now. Today is not your lucky day.
The barrier has cracked. Something slithers through.
Why now?
Why you?

Bubs, author of To The Whistling Winds
You’re a pretty normal young adult living in the 21st century: you have exceeding amounts of student loan debt, a housemate, and a job that pays just above minimum wage. You didn’t exactly dream of being a tour guide for the historical Chester Theme Park, but you’ve grown used to your every day life.
You thought you knew the park better than anyone, but as the friendly surface begins to crack and unexplainable events begin happening, you’ll need help dealing with the vengeful Fae, who seem to have a bone to pick with you in particular. Fortunately—or maybe unfortunately—there seem to be a Covey of fae seekers that might be inclined to help you…

Jess, author of A Bard’s Tale
It takes place on the fictional continent of Amaran, a high fantasy setting based on Asian and Pacific Islander cultures as opposed to traditional Eurocentric high fantasy.

Nines, author of Orthall Bay
[…]The name always stuck, regardless of how many foster families you fell under. It should be comforting that at least one aspect of you will always stay the same, but it’s a stark reminder of how isolated you are. A name with nothing to belong to, nothing to trace back to. Then again, you’ve managed to get this far just on your own.
In Orthall Bay, an in-development interactive fiction, you play as a young adult who grew up as an orphan. You have no knowledge about your parents, or any form of family. That is, until you get a phone call about a recently-passed man claiming to be your grandfather. Two things are certain when you arrive in the maritime town. One, Orthall Bay is seemingly idyllic. And two, there’s no such thing as perfect towns.
The question is, how deep does its roots go?

God of the Red Mountain
Mei, author of God of the Red Mountain
You are a spirit born of the Red Mountain–though you’ve run away from it long ago. You’d be content to stay away, too, if not for the mountain god who suddenly comes looking for you. But what purpose do they have? And what exactly is your end goal?
Based on East Asian myths and folklore, you play as a powerful, nameless spirit in a shifting world. As a being caught between death and life, you are connected to a stream of limitless power, and the more you are known, the more powerful you become.
However, your journey will not be so smooth. You have been cursed by powerful, malignant beings known as Foxes, and it’s only a matter of time before you fall from sanity yourself.

Salty, author of Love & Friendship
Do contracted nuptial arrangements fire up your loins? Have you ever wanted to experience the high-highs and low-lows of a lady in the prime of her marriage market days? Have you ever lain awake at night lamenting your birth in a time where divorce is readily available and women no longer need to marry as their only economic means of survival?
Why not come find your happiness in the Regency world of balls, debauchery, and a surprising amount of paperwork. Become an accomplished lady of many talents and impress gentle society or use your feminine wiles and wicked wit to flirt your way into scandal and, perhaps even, ruin. Play matchmaker and decide the fate of the ladies in your acquaintance. Pursue your choice of suitor; a dear childhood friend, a lord of dubious reputation, a wealthy widow with a heart of stone, or even, the coveted gentleman with 15,000 pound a year. After all, if you can’t find love, you may as well marry rich.

Aster, author of Nevermoore
They say that curiosity killed the cat, but it won’t be satisfaction that’ll be bringing you back. Again. And again. And again.
The simple act of visiting your parents turns into something much more than what you were expecting when your car suddenly breaks down in the middle of nowhere, and you find yourself right beside a small town that’s engulfed by the trees.
Some of the residents you met right away were welcoming enough, happy to try and lend a helping hand when they can. But their smiles seemed more apologetic than happy, and their eyes looked at you with regret.
You never really did understand why that was…
Until you died.
So now, you are an unwilling participant in an endless cycle of death and resurrection. And the more you learn about the bloodstained history of the town and the past of its people, the more you’ll get tangled up in a web of secrets that threatens to keep you there forever.
So welcome, newcomer… to Nevermoore.

Here’s some resources to help you make text-based interactive fiction games!
Totally unprompted!  There’s certainly nothing going on in a certain forum right now (or rather an on-going issue).  Nope, I just thought it would be nice to share some resources.  ;)
—–
Twine
Twine is such an easy tool to use.  It uses its own scripting language Sugarcube (there’s also Harlowe and Snowman, but they don’t have the same functionality and creator support as Sugarcube does to my knowledge), Javascript, and CSS.
Twine is FREE!!!
Sugarcube literally gives you a save function (which does browser and save to desktop)!!!  Be the save-hoarding goblin you were born to be!
It’s criminally easy to make games with Twine.  They make it easy to make stats, relationships, and other info pages.  When setting up the paths you can literally see arrows pointing where they lead, you can move passages around visually so you can group them up by chapter/scene/etc……to be fair once your game gets BIG it can get messy and confusing.
I have coding experience prior to finding Twine, but I’m absolutely certain anyone can make great games with Twine.  If all your doing is making text-based ‘more story than game’ games, then you’ll be doing minimal coding (setting variables, if/else statements, using text boxes, etc) so you shouldn’t have any issues.
If you do have issues I’m 99% certain someone has had your issue before, and the answer is one google search away.
You can use Twine in your browser, just be careful to not mess with the data/cookies or you can lose your games (totally not speaking from experience)….archive your games often if you use Twine in browser.  You can also download Twine, so you can use it offline!
Links:
Twine
SugarCube v2 Documentation - Your new best friend.
With the Settings API you can add a mature filter, different style themes (great for light/dark themes and color blind themes…or just different themes to look cool), difficulty settings, volume control, etc.
HiEv’s SugarCube 2 Sample Code - An ever-expanding collection of code, tips, macros, widgets.  A good mix of fun and useful stuff.
^ Includes a great pronoun widget!!!  To be fair it’s not the most user-friendly widget at first, especially if you aren’t a coder, but in the long run a widget like this is a great tool for customizing pronouns.  It allows you to write a character in the code with one set of pronouns throughout the game ($They $are a great $person), the widget selects the correct word through an switch (aka a fancy if/else) statement when the character is assigned a pronoun……so when playing a female it would display as “She is a great girl”, a male would be “He is a great guy”, and nonbinary would be “They are a great person”.  You can add neopronouns this way too!
Chapel’s custom macros - Chapel has a lot of cool macros, but a lot of them are more advanced.  Very few have been useful for the kinds of games I want to make, but they may be useful for you.
r/twinegames - Twine has some older forums, which are still up (though not active) and have helpful answers on them, but the current forum is found on reddit.
w3schools - When it’s time to style your game, this will be your lifeline.  Even today, like…seven years after first learning CSS I still come back to w3schools all the time. !!!Twine has funky class/id selectors for it’s built in stuff so refer back to the SugarCube Documentation!!!
—–
Itch.io
Itch doesn’t take ownership of your content!
It doesn’t have DRM!
You can host your games for free, paid, or free with donation.
It does take a cut of your sales “The Company shall be entitled to a share of the revenue Publishers receive from Transactions which shall be calculated on the gross revenue from the Transactions“ (I’ve seen 30% but I’ve also seen “Lets you choose what to give them” so I’m not exactly sure how much their cut is).
THERE IS NO RESTRICTION ON CONTENT ASSUMING IT’S LEGAL (though if collecting payment you may be under different restrictions per the payment provider’s policy), so please make all the twisted, dark, disturbing, and/or sexual games you want!!!
Links:
Itch.io

r/interactivefictions
r/interactivefictions is a good place for game recs, coding/writing resources, etc.
Links:
r/interactivefictions

Tumblr
Tumblr is…well we’re all on here so we know how tumblr is like.
Great tags to look at: #interactive fiction, #interactive novel, #interactive game, #twine game, #dev log, #IF, #if game, #upcoming game, #promo post
Tumblr is a great platform, but as every creator knows…Reblog!!!  Reblog!!! Reblog!!!  The lifeblood of tumblr is reblogging.
I’ve found SOOOO many games I would never have known existed through if-creator’s blogs just because they reblogged a post from another if-creator.
@interact-if and @iorifd are doing great work!  They collect games, share helpful coding/writing tips, etc.  Go show them some love!  Interact-if runs the subreddit mentioned above, and iorifd is working on a database for visual novels and text-based games.
—–
IFDB (Interactive Fiction Database)
IFDB is a database for interactive fiction games.  You can add new game listings, write reviews, make game polls, make game recommendation lists, etc.
IFDB seems to like their parser games (parsers being where you type in commands like “go west”, “open door”, etc).
It actually has a pretty good filter and ignore system.
Links:
IFDB
—–
Obviously this isn’t the end all be all of dev tools or hosting platforms for interactive fiction.  Ink is a scripting tool similar to Twine I’ve only heard of recently that might be interesting to you.  Ren’Py, although primarily a visual novel engine, can be used to make text-based games.  The only other hosting alternative I know is DashingDon, I THINK they only host ChoiceScript games and I don’t think you can sell through them, but it’s a good place regardless.
Cheers! :D

important question
if the ros had pets (gotta include everyone!), who would refer to their pet as "here's my weird trash gremlin bastard" and who would instead be like "this is the precious beautiful love of my life"?
I'm most definitely the former, even if I would die for my pet :<)
I am both at different points in time XD
Jefferson: Oatmeal is his lazy brat baby.  He loves Oatmeal to death, but this is still the laziest cat ever who likes to sleep in Jefferson’s fabric bin instead of his nicely lined, out-of-the-way basket.  So, stinky bastard man.
Merrill: He could never speak a mean word against Coralie, even as a joke 😭 she’s his sweet little noodle baby.  Even if she acts a fool sometimes.  That said, Merrill is absolutely not above holding her like a literal limp noodle and tossing her around.
Clara: A combination that comes out as ‘precious bastard baby’ XD which is in fact what she calls both Oatmeal and Coralie, to Jefferson’s amusement and Merrill’s horror.
Modesty: She would never call Snickerdoodle anything but the sweetest things.  How dare you suggest she is anything but an angel.  Modesty’s actually... a little gross about it XD she just loves her best girl!!!
Newt: Isaac is a grabby little bastard.  Newt loves his little lizard buddy, but Isaac also likes to pull on and grab anything in his reach, which includes Newt’s hair and shirt collar.  But only he is allowed to call Isaac that, no one else 😤
Max: They aren’t nearly as grossly affectionate as Merrill or Modesty, but they’re also the type to be in the ‘my pet has never done anything wrong ever’ club.  They’re more a ‘my little buddy’ type than a ‘my sweet little baby’ type, though.
~
Thank you so much for the ask!!

so you mentioned Merrill wouldn't be great at taking care of plants, but would he like having some? My MC is going to go to his house every week to water them if needed 🥺
He technically does have some plants!  Most prominently the daisies in the window box outside his townhouse.  Though he’s not really the one who takes care of them, which he’ll readily admit.  He’d feel bad but appreciate it if MC did that, though they might have to coordinate with Jefferson and Clara so they don’t accidentally overwater XD
~
Thank you very much for the ask!

How do the ROs feel about cuddle naps? I just took a nap and it was *chef's kiss*
Ooooh 👀
Jefferson: Not really a nap person himself, he tends to be too busy for that, but if MC wanted him next to them while they napped, he’d be more than happy to cuddle with them!
Merrill: This sounds like a very nice idea to him!  ...in theory.  Unfortunately he takes forever to fall asleep and then stays asleep.  He’d love to nap with MC, but he’ll have to content himself with just cuddling them.
Clara: Yes.  Just, yes.  She has a much easier time falling asleep, so she’s all for this.  She makes herself very nice and comfortable cuddling with MC, and, while it’s a much more quiet activity than she’s used to, it’s nice 😌
Modesty: She says she’s not a napper.  This is a lie and she’ll curl up with MC at the drop of a hat.  But it has to be in private because she got poked in the stomach one too many times in her teens by Rance.
Newt: On a work day?  Absolutely not.  On an off-day?  Absolutely.  That just means that he has more energy for stargazing that night 👀 he’s still an octopus, cuddling them very tightly.
Max: They’re surprisingly cool with just chilling for an afternoon!  They might not fully fall asleep, but they’d be happy to hang with MC while they nap.

Thank you so much for the ask!!
