This one was a collaborative effort between myself and my best drinking buddy @chrisurie (okay, it was mostly him, I just pushed some pixels around in Photoshop and suggested the bitters). It's the perfect cocktail to get you through Thanksgiving 2020, and unlike most pumpkin pie it's also vegan if that appeals to ya. I'll be drinking a few of these tomorrow during my first ever solo Thanksgiving... *cue sad violin* 🎻😢 Harvest Moon • 2 oz @saxtonsdistillery Maple Bourbon (see notes) (60ml) • ½ oz Pumpkin Spice Syrup (see notes)(15ml) • 2 dashes Angostura Instructions: ① Add all ingredients to a cocktail shaker then vigorously shake with 3–4 medium sized ice cubes. ② Double strain into a chilled cocktail glass. * * * Notes * * * Pumpkin Spice Syrup: Combine the following in a saucepan: • 1-¼ cup water • 1 cup sugar • ⅓ cup pumpkin puree • 1 tsp cinnamon • ½ tsp vanilla extract • ¼ tsp nutmeg • ¼ tsp ground ginger • ⅛ tsp cloves Bring to a boil then reduce to medium heat for about 15 minutes, stirring frequently to avoid burning. Strain through a fine mesh sieve into a bottle. While this is essentially just a blue Gin & Tonic, the butterfly pea-flower and baking soda create some interesting flavor variations beyond just the simple dye job. The baking soda, which is mainly added to push the color back to blue, does actually mellow the citric acidity of the tonic, creating a much smoother cocktail, while the re-carbonation helps give the drink back it's bite. It's also a fun science experiment to see the effects of pH on color! Gin & Sonic • 2 oz Butterfly Pea Flower-infused London Dry Gin (see notes) • 4 oz Fever-Tree Mediterranean Tonic • Baking Soda • Carbonation equipment Instructions: ① Pour blue gin into mixing glass. ② Add tonic and watch as gin changes from blue to purple. ③ Add a few flecks of baking soda and gently stir for a few seconds. Repeat until liquid is desired level of “Sonic” blue (it took me about 1/16 of a teaspoon) ④ Carbonate mixture using an iSi whipper, SodaStream or other carbonation device. ⑤ Pour over 3-4 ice cubes in a Collins glass and stir gently for six seconds with a straw. Notes: To make Butterfly Pea Flower-infused Gin, pour 12 oz of London Dry Gin into a mason jar and add 12 dried Butterfly Pea Flowers. Screw on lid, give a quick shake and let sit for several hours, until dark blue. Strain through a cheesecloth into a bottle. "Our Sidecar is in Another Castle..." 👑🍑🥃 I thought about using peach puree for this cocktail, but I decided on a Sidecar riff with peach brandy since the Princess is kind of a badass. I also had this bottle of @fireballwhisky gathering dust in the back of my liquor cabinet and was determined to use it in something. If you don't have Fireball, just increase both the Cinnamon Bark Syrup and the Bourbon to ¾ oz each. Peach Princess • 1 oz Cognac (30ml) • ½ oz Evan Williams (100 proof) Bottled-in-Bond Bourbon (15ml) • ½ oz Lemon Juice (15ml) • ¼ oz Peach Brandy (10ml) • ¼ oz Fireball Cinnamon Whisky (10ml) • ½ oz Cinnamon Bark Syrup (see notes) (15ml) • 3 dashes Fee Brothers Cardamom Bitters • Peach slice Instructions: ① Add everything except peach slice to a cocktail shaker. ② Add ice and shake until cold. ③ Double strain into a chilled cocktail glass. ④ Garnish with peach slice. Notes: Cinnamon Bark Syrup 1 cup water 2 cups sugar 3 cinnamon sticks, broken up into 10–20 pieces Add water and cinnamon fragments to a small saucepan over medium-low heat. Simmer for ten minutes then slowly add sugar while stirring or whisking. Once the sugar has dissolved, remove saucepan from heat, cover, and let sit at room temperature for at least 8 hours. Strain through a cheesecloth into a 16 oz bottle, close tight, shake, and refrigerate. I know some would consider calling this a martini to be sacrilege, but I can't pass up a good portmanteau. This drink is a throwback to the sugary 'tinis of the late 90s, but I promise it's more delicious thanks to fresh squeezed fruit juices and pulps (feel free to use frozen passion fruit pulp). Q*Bertini • 1-½ oz @titosvodka (45ml) • ½ oz Pierre Ferrand Dry Curaçao (15ml) • ¾ oz Passion Fruit Syrup (see notes) (20ml) • ½ oz Fresh-squeezed Orange Juice (15ml) • ¼ oz Fresh-squeezed Lime Juice (10ml) • 1 dash Regan’s Orange Bitters • 1 dash Bittermens ‘Elemakule Tiki Bitters Instructions: ① Add everything to a cocktail shaker with ice and shake until cold. ② Double strain into a chilled cocktail glass. ③ Garnish with orange peel. ④ Swear loudly. Notes: To make Passion Fruit Syrup, dissolve 1 cup of sugar into ½ cup of water in a saucepan over the lowest heat setting. Turn off heat and stir in 1 cup of passion fruit puree. Funnel mixture into a 16 oz bottle, close tight, shake, and refrigerate. It's-a-me... a-Maro! And not just one Amaro, but two Amaros... you know, like brothers? 👨🏻🥃👨🏻 This one started out using the Boulevardier template, swapping out the Campari for a split-Amaro base. It was a little too sweet, so I dialed back the vermouth. The bourbon I used is 100 proof, but if you use an 80 proof just up the amount to 1-½ oz. Super Amaro Bros. • 1 oz Evan Williams (100 proof) Bottled-in-Bond Bourbon (30ml) • ½ oz Amaro Averna (15ml) • ½ oz Amaro Nonino (15ml) • ½ oz Cocchi Vermouth di Torino (15ml) • 2 dashes Fee Brothers Black Walnut Bitters • Orange peel Instructions: ① Add everything except orange peel to a mixing glass. ② Add ice and stir for 20 seconds. ③ Strain into a chilled double rocks glass over a large ice cube. ④ Squeeze the orange peel over the drink to express the oils. Being that most of us could probably use a drink right now, I think it's the perfect time to share a new project I've been working on ever since quarantine shut down all of my favorite bars: cocktails inspired by some of my favorite video games (and hopefully some of yours!) This first one is inspired by the very first 3D entry in the Legend of Zelda series, and my love of Gimlets. Ocarina of Thyme • 2 oz Gin (60ml) • ¾ oz Fresh-squeezed Lime Juice (20ml) • ¾ oz Simple Syrup (20ml) • 1 tbsp fresh thyme leaves • 1 sprig of Thyme (for garnish) Instructions: ① Strip 1 tablespoon of thyme leaves and add to a cocktail shaker. ② Add the simple syrup, then gently muddle the leaves. ③ Add the gin and lime juice then vigorously shake with 3–4 medium sized ice cubes. ④ Double strain into a chilled cocktail glass and garnish with a sprig of thyme and, optionally, a lime wedge. Make sure to use fresh-squeezed lime juice (not from a bottle!) and fresh thyme (not dried!). You can use whatever dry gin you want, but I like to support my local distilleries so I use @bluecoatgin from Philadelphia Distilling. Scott Pilgrim Takes Over the World Client: Entertainment Weekly Art Direction: Chuck Kerr I recently had the pleasure of illustrating and typographizing (yes I made that word up, fight me!) a full spread for an article in @entertainmentweekly about the ten year anniversary of one of my favorite movies of all time, Scott Pilgrim vs the World. One of the challenges in illustrating a spread is that the gutter kind of swallows up the middle of the illustration, so I will sometimes opt for a very balanced, symmetrical composition like this. The goal is to cruise your way through all three levels, while collecting COACH handbags and avoiding obstacles, to a holiday party in NYC.
