SunPort began at a solar conference founders Paul and Don attended in southern California several years ago. As electric power industry veterans, they were responding to market signals and expanding a traditional power equipment business into solar. They hoped to make connections in the solar industry and gain insight into the industry’s needs. They weren’t seeking a new mission or way to change the world, but their “light bulb” moment came…“Who has solar?,” a speaker asked for a show of hands. In an auditorium full of thousands at a solar conference, only a few dozen hands raised. These were solar industry insiders—the true believers—and even they were struggling to go solar. Don and Paul realized the world needed a “Solar 2.0.” There was no way solar could become the planet’s primary power source unless something changed radically to make it much more accessible for everyone. Don and Paul were soon joined by Matt in brainstorming ideas and mining insights. Things clicked when they realized the business potential of solar consumed as a service.  Patents were filed and plans were made, but they needed to build a team. At Startup Weekend Santa Fe in the spring of 2013, Paul met Tim and Nick, who joined on to add much-needed technical capabilities. Further development and numerous pivots quickly led to a crude but recognizable version of what is now SunPort. Crowdfunding has become so prolific it is set to surpass venture capital funds in 2016. Now famous brands such as Oculus Rift and Ubuntu Edge got their start on crowdfunding sites. And while crowdfunding may seem more accessible than raising money from seed or angel investors, successful crowdfunding campaigns require entrepreneurs to plan their campaigns thoughtfully.  On February 25th, we invite you to join us for an exciting evening with New Mexico’s leading crowdfunding experts. The evening begins with the New Mexico Securities Division’s Senior Regulatory Attorney, Brandon Toensing, will explain new regulations you need to know about when you launch your crowdfunding campaign. Next Nick Williams, SunPort, will share the strategies behind their successful 2015 campaign raising $120,599. We end the night with a panel discussion with founders of New Mexico’s top funded companies: Level 99 Games, Sunport and CENTS. These entrepreneurs expertise will help you avoid pitfalls and maximize success in the wild west of crowdfunding. Brad Talton (Level 99 Games) has launched 12 crowdfunded board game projects on Kickstarter, three of which are the top funded projects in the state of New Mexico.  Nick Williams (SunPort) helped tech startup Sunport reach their goal and now they are able to produce the world’s first smart grid solar delivery device.  Making a feature film is costly, and Christopher Boone raised $61,468 in 2014 to help make CENTS into a full length movie.  New Mexico Securities Division helps New Mexicans be proactive with their financial decisions rather than reacting after the problem has occurred.
