Clink … Clink … Clink … 

The repetitive noise was barely discernible at first, then it became all that I could focus on. 

In an attempt to find the source, I looked up from my paperwork and scanned the room. It only took me half a second to discover that Morgan was the culprit. 

From across the round table, I watched as Derek absentmindedly stirred his coffee and sugar together, making a ‘clink’ noise each time his spoon hit the rim of the cup. This wouldn’t have been bothersome had it not persisted for more than 10 minutes which, by all accounts, is plenty of time for the sugar to dissolve.

“Derek… ” I sort of sang, trying to capture his attention as nicely as possible. 

“Derek.” I repeated, this time a little less quietly and a little more sharply. Still, my voice did nothing to stop the noisy stirring of his coffee. I stayed silent for a second, just in case he finally noticed I was speaking to him, but when he didn’t, I gave a concerned look to Spencer beside me as if to ask if he was seeing what I was and he returned just the same expression of confusion. 

That’s when I knew something was wrong.

It all started that first autumn after Maeve’s death - just five weeks past a year since I parted with her. I was absentmindedly reading when, rather out of the blue, Mary Donovan called to inform me about a Mrs. Rachel Larsen. 

Although we didn’t learn her actual name until later, she was first known to us as the recipient of Maeve’s liver. Not a single one of the three of us - Maeve’s parents and me - had expected a recipient to be in contact with us. That inability to predict such an event was caused by my neglect to remember Maeve was an organ donor. It wasn’t particularly relevant in the grand scheme of things, and for that forgetfulness, I was truly ashamed, but after reading Rachel Larsen’s letter together with the Donovans, it all came back to me. 

Every single thing. 

You see, despite the anonymity of the person writing to us, it was as if I could actually feel Maeve’s soul coming alive again, as strange as that sounds. 

She was still here with me … in some form.

“How you doin’ over there, Princessa?” Alvez half-chuckled from the other side of Reid’s limp body. There was no semblance of strain behind his voice, which proved a level of strength that I severely envied right about now. 

“Not great,” I grumbled, heavily implied sarcasm soaking my tone. Carrying Spencer to the taxi was no easy feat, especially considering I was a little tipsy myself. Not to say I was anywhere near as hammered as our friend here, but the pavement sure did look smooth where I knew it to be uneven. 

My eyes were playing tricks on me, and later in the night, I would assume that my ears were, too.

Prologue

Events like these weren’t exceedingly rare. They weren’t anything like Halley’s Comet, by any means, where it only happens once in your lifetime - if you’re lucky. But they weren’t exactly sunrises - something that you can count on occurring every day without fail.

It’s not too often that I find a mind quite like mine, so you’ll forgive me for the reaction it elicits to watch them transcend the physical level and connect with me on the psychological one. There’s only been a handful of people who’ve ever had the exact standard of aptitude to be permissible into this metaphysical world with me, but now - there’s a handful and one.

Why I Think the “Friends-To-Lovers” Trope in Television is Always Doomed to Fail

DISCLAIMER: The points I’m about to make are 100% opinion-based. So even if you do not agree with me, that doesn’t mean I’m wrong, nor does that give you the right to bash me for having these opinions. Feel free to comment with your differing perspective, but only if you’ll respect mine. 

A) As stated in the title, I will only be referring to TV Shows because movies with the “Friends-to-lovers” trope perform far better since writers have to write the plot with intention. If they want friends to end up together, they have to plan for that to happen before the end of the movie. Whereas TV Shows run over the course of several episodes, allowing them more freedom to experiment with the plot.  B) I will be speaking generally, so for those people that like to chime in about those once-in-a-blue-moon exceptions to this theory, just know - I know there’s exceptions and I’ve included them at the end of this post. 

Most canon couples who start out as friends falls flat for me and here’s why:

1. Neither character can have a better romantic connection with someone other than the ‘friend’ you intend to set them up with. 

Right off the bat, an example of this would be Caroline, Klaus, and Stefan. As someone who somehow managed to evade spoilers while watching TVD, I had no idea Caroline and Stefan were going to end up together. And honestly, when it became clear Steroline was endgame as opposed to Klaroline, I was disappointed. 

Speaking more generally, having an undeniably better third party in the picture is kryptonite to the “Friends-To-Lovers” storyline that the writers try to push. Inevitably, that third person who had more chemistry, character growth, etc. with one of the ‘friends’ will cause a “The One That Got Away” situation. The fandom will always seek fulfillment in that un-pursued relationship because ‘the relationship that never was’ - especially if it was the better relationship - will always be more alluring than ‘the relationship that was but never should have been.’ 

2. You can’t just spring a love confession on viewers and expect them to like it if there was so much character growth that happened BECAUSE the two didn’t end up together initially. 

Cough cough - CRIMINAL MINDS. Cough cough - HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER. 

Two prime examples of how sometimes characters are better off as just friends. What’s worse is that in both instances, the characters involved had moved on and were better for it. But the minute the writers drudged up the past, it literally nullified any growth and development that took place since the uncoupling. 

Maybe I’ll consider giving Criminal Minds a pass considering they never truly did follow up on that ‘date’ between Spencer and JJ until LIKE 13 SEASONS LATER, but what I said still stands. If there was something that happened between Spencer and JJ at the football game - it’s evident she moved on from it as she went on to marry Will and even started a family with him. AND GUESS WHAT? She became a more well-rounded character because of the introduction of a separate love interest! But noooOO! The CM writers just had to have their cake and eat it too. They’re all out here bringing up some old ass ‘romance,’ if it can even be considered that, to rile up the fandom and keep them interested. 

In my opinion, JJ confessing she’s always loved Reid, really turned me off from her character in that moment. Not that I didn’t still love her, but I actually found myself appalled that out of everything she could’ve said - that’s what she chose to admit. And look where that love confession the writers sprung on us got them! The friendship between Spencer and JJ was tainted with this confusion of “Where the f did that come from?” and “Was that really necessary?” SPOILER ALERT: IT CAME OUT OF NOWHERE AND IT WASN’T. 

Don’t even get me started on Ted in HIMYM. I mean, gosh that show falls into a whole other category in and of itself. It managed to plunge head-first right into BOTH of the pitfalls I’ve mentioned thus far. Barney and Robin made for a far better pairing than Ted and Robin, therefore falling under Pitfall 1. And Ted having done so much growth after being with Robin, falls under Pitfall 2. 

3. Not every soulmate you have in your life is romantic. Arguably the best soulmates are platonic ones.

Call me a cynic, but I hate hate HATE when there are two good friends and writers see that as an opportunity to make them a couple. While it’s evident the two friends love each other, that doesn’t mean they should just suddenly be in love with each other. Not every pairing with a healthy dynamic should be together. I see being friends as a relationship that’s more valuable to air on TV than a forced romantic one. Of course that doesn’t necessarily draw in more fans or garner more interest, but consider the TV characters that didn’t succumb to forced romanticism. 

Penelope and Derek in CM. Bonnie and Damon in TVD. And Pheobe and Joey in Friends. 

Each person and their counterpart were shown to have great growth and/or stability in their friendship over the course of the show. They all had great chemistry. They had great moments. They had great lessons. And the best part was that their love for each other never became romantic. Friendship, in my mind, is so much more important than romance. Taking a pure platonic friendship and forcing it to become romantic is the #1 easiest way to ruin the one good thing you got going for you, writers. It’s the same energy as when a close friend, whose friendship you value so much, goes and says they like you. It just ruins the vibe, man.

GOOD QUESTION. So I do have a part 2 of starstruck written, not completed, but it’s definitely in the works. As for when that may come out, I’m hoping not far from now given that I’ve cleared through the majority of my WIPs and it’s summer break for me, a full time student, meaning I’ve got the time to really hone in on my writing. Spoiled Rotten Ending Explained

FIRST OF ALL, I absolutely love these kinds of questions and to anyone who may have them, never ever be afraid to send them my way. I am MORE than happy to answer.

🛑 SPOILERS BELOW! YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED 🛑

Now to answer this question- in a (hopefully) semi-satisfying way- the ending of Spoiled Rotten was supposed to be up for interpretation.

I acknowledge that that isn’t exactly a satisfying answer right off the bat, but it is the most accurate term for what I was going for. The reason being is that I love when readers see the story ending in different ways that I could never have even imagined. It’s awesome when people can take whole new perspectives from my writing.

With that being said, while it was up for interpretation, I did deliberately implement something in the story that would allude to a definitive ending and not just a flat out open ending. (Full disclosure, just because I might have pictured the ending differently than anyone else did, does not mean that it’s wrong).

I am truly a sucker for happy endings. If you’ve read any of my fluff fics, you know that I am the very first person to hold out hope for my OTPs. And because of my affinity for happy endings, I knew that I wanted one for Reader and Spencer in Spoiled Rotten. 

After everything they had been through, it felt not only right, but also rewarding for there to be light at the end of the tunnel. I seldom put characters through excessive pain, devastation, and trauma without a silver lining. The silver lining here was that Spencer does want to be with her! 

The key piece that alludes towards a hopeful ending? The photo booth pictures and the note. 

If it wasn’t completely and totally obvious, Reader loves Spencer. Otherwise, she wouldn’t have kept trying to visit him nor would she have held onto those photo booth pictures. Likewise, Spencer loves Reader! Otherwise, he wouldn’t have been trying to stop her from seeing him at his worst in prison nor would he have kept the other half of those pictures. 

Given that Spencer was seemingly avoiding Reader at all costs up until his departure, Reader needed that confirmation that Spencer loved her like she loved him. Reader explicitly says, 

“I had been desperate to cling onto any notion that he still loved me, and there it was, just sitting on his desk. Proof that the man I loved was still in there somewhere.” 

Those pictures alone were a beacon of hope for her. The note just further confirms it. It’s not that he doesn’t love her or doesn’t want to be with her. He’s just not the man he was before. The emotionally available man. And can you really blame him? Spencer did transform after prison, but not into someone beyond recognition. Rather, he evolved. Take the evolution of an animal for example, they aren’t suddenly not that animal anymore because they’ve changed. Just like everything Spencer is at the core of himself still remains. And at the core of his being, he loves her. 

In reference to the actual ending, and not the elements that foreshadow it, Spencer says, “For everyone else, I bend, but for you, I break.” This might be what strikes a gray area for people, where they don’t know if that’s a good or a bad thing, but - it’s the sucker for happily ever after’s in me talking here - it is a good thing. 

I view breaking, in this case, as a deeper devotion to someone. Sure, you’ll bend for those you care about, but you’ll be willing to break for those you love. Because true love is inconvenient! It’s not easy! It’s time-consuming! It’s mind-numbing! And sometimes, it just simply hurts! Breaking for someone is the magnified, exacerbated, intensified version of bending for someone. Just as loving someone in the magnified, exacerbated, intensified version of liking someone. 

To make a really long explanation short, the ending is hopeful. I don’t see Spencer overcoming and accepting his trauma anytime soon, which is the ultimate obstacle standing between Reader and Spencer, but I do see it as something he is working towards. Once he does pursue the help he needs, he will not only be a better man for himself, but the kind of man he wants to be for Reader.
