Morena had developed a streak of silver on her temple since he'd last seen her. There were creases in the corners of her eyes and lips, revealing signs of laughter and joy over the years despite the stress and the loss and the distance between her and the remaining family she had left. His gaze shifted to her hands, watching the way a slight tremble shook them as she lifted her cup and took a sip of tea.  There was a tension in the air as he slipped his own tea, buying time and unsure of what to say or where to start. It felt awkward to say he had missed her. It felt callous to ask how she had been in the time they'd spent apart. He wanted to reach out across the space between them to take her hand within his own. He wanted to pull her into a hug and lay his head in her lap as she murmured some make believe story.

Then he turned twenty and Mystra, lovely Mystra who mentored and taught him with patience, kissed him. Then he turned twenty-eight and he began to question the latest experiment in earnest, concerned over the implications and the dangers as one lab rat after another died within hours or days. Then he turned thirty-three and Mystra turned him into the first human trial of the experiment, as though he could survive where the rats couldn’t. At the age of thirty-five, two years on the run from the Enclave and Mystra and everything that had gone so wrong in his life, Gale met the sickly pale mutant with garnet eyes and a wicked grin and knew then and there that he was in trouble.

“We will take breaks when you need to. We can set up stops in the settlements so there's always somewhere we can stay when we need to. I'm still very angry with you, but…I don't know that I can say I would have done anything differently in your position.” Astarion sighed.  “I like to think that you would. You’re a good person.” Gale assured. As though that made any difference in this situation. As though Gale himself wasn’t a good person. Gale who took them out of their way to help others knowing that it cut into the time that he had left to fix himself. Gale who always made sure that they had purified water on hand at all costs for Astarion so that the mutant wasn’t constantly having to rely on what was tainted but readily available. Gale who did so much to help and to make the Commonwealth a little bit better with each passing day.

Astarion swallowed thickly, unable to look away. He shouldn't be seeing this. He should turn it off. He should walk away and pretend he didn't see anything.  He clicked through the options, horror gripping him tightly. Eugenics, disease, subliminal messaging, addiction, control vaults…File after electronic file on various vaults and what had been done. He made a low instinctive whining sound when he stumbled onto one that read ‘Vault 124 - Medical - Creation of next step in human evolution’ on the screen. No. No.
