So you are engaging in Death of the Author, huh? In this case, I kind of have to agree with you. Azula knowing instant lightning brings up more questions than it answers, like why didn't Iroh or Ozai never use the technique, why did Azula bother to charge her lightning during Sozin's Comet if she could make lethal instant lightning, or why she didn't spam it during the show, regardless if she could make lethal instant lightning?
Not to mention, it is not the first time the writing team/Bryke have made lore errors. For example, Kyoshi was not intended to have lived for 230 years and Azulon originally ruled only for 25 years before the length of his reign was changed to 75 years.
Also, don't apologize for the length of your answer. Beyond the fact that your answer was short in my opinion and I myself regularly write long answers, it would be against the ethos of tumblr, a blog site, to complain about the length of someone's response to me.
It isn't significant, but there's a common misconception that during these two scenes (Azula attacking Mai and Azuka attacking Katara) Azula wanted to use lighting. But that's false, she actually wanted to use her fire. And that's why:
Every time Azula used lightings, before the shot she had to "charge" it (which she does by creating these energetic circles around herself). And Iroh and Ozai need the same thing
While when she just attacks someone with her two fingers she always attacks with her fire
So yeah, when she attacked Mai and Katara she wanted to use her casual fire, not lighting

Agreed. Before the comics were a thing, I thought Mai's post-war arc would be a mix of her working through her indoctrination and trying to make amends for her actions during war*, continuing to learn how to express herself and establish boundaries in romantic and platonic relationships, and discover what she wants to do in life now that she is free to decide, ending in her either becoming a worthy Fire Lady or finding her passion in life and dedicating herself to it depending on whether or not she stayed with Zuko.
*(Imo, Mai betraying Azula to protect Zuko did not mean she instantly unlearned everything she learned growing up, nor does it completely absolve of her wartime actions.)
Like you said, sucks that her character has been caught in so much soap opera drama that dresses up her OOC behavior as character growth while avoiding giving her actual character growth. Moreover, even when she is written closer to how she written in the show, it sucks that her genuine flaws, mistakes, and personality quirks are ignored, glossed over, or sanded over in an effort to make her palatable.
Especially since a lot of people who dislike Mai don't hate her for not adhering to social norms, they hate her because she gets in the way of their preferred ship(s).
Trying to make Mai a "normie" not only contradicts the show, it will alienate the people who liked her character as is in the show.
Or in other words, if you try to please everyone, you please no one.
I want Mai to be happy and grow as a person. I want her to not be at 30 what she was like at 15. I want more stories told with her. I want more Mai content but everytime I wish for it, this is what it feels like:
Getting more Mai content has a high chance of defeating the purpose of wanting more Mai content 😭 I want to see more of Mai from ATLA, not some normie that wears her skin 😭
More chances of her being mischaracterised until she's no longer recognisable. And the whole thing passed off as "character development" (it ain't. and you can do it while keeping her unconventional personality intact and not turn her into Jane #3!)
I especially hate when mischaracterisation aka turning her into a soap opera heroine (the way Yang did) gets called "maturing". No, it isn't. Becoming more palatable and maturing are two different things.
At least Ashes of the Academy was better than Yang's stuff.
Mai was such a novel experience because female characters are rarely allowed to be like that and now they're shaving down those very things about her.
But damn it, I want more Mai content!

If you don't take WoG statements into account, taking the Kyoshi novels, comics, and TLOK together, lightning generation doesn't always have to be lethal. The strength of one's lightning depends on how much time you have to charge. It is just that for whatever reason, the Fire Nation royal family and their allies forgot or never learned Xu Ping An's instant lightning generation technique. That is until Azula independently learned the technique as part of her gaining the ability to completely modulate the strength of her lightning.

Also, it is just a headcanon, but considering it is canon that Fire Lord Zuko shared the Royal Family's techniques with the world and Azula has a lukewarm reputation in the Fire Nation, instead of being seen solely as a disgraceful failure and terrorist, it seems like as part of her atonement Azula helped share the royal family's techniques, including lightning generation and redirection.
Or in other words, she is responsible for why lightning generation isn't just a lethal attack, and can be used to stun people or generate power for a city.
If you do take WoG statements into account, then, combined with what TLOK shows, Azula was always able to shoot instant lightning, which by its very nature is weaker, or can be weaker, than fully charged lightning.
(Apparently, the writing team for ATLA the show intended for Azula to shoot lightning at Mai and Katara, and one of the creators recently reaffirmed the idea that Azula was going to shoot lightning at Katara before she froze them both.)
Reason 1736378 why the comics are bad:
They made lightning harmless, it doesn’t do any damage at all or do they want to just tell me that Azula is so nice to regulate her lighting extra for them down…

Her eyes meet his. He reaches out his arm and takes an enormous breath. With terror clear in her eyes, her hand reaches for his, and he locks his grip on her wrist, and her fingers dig into his arm.
“I got you! Hold on!”
Vermillion Seas, Cardinal Skies Chapter 22: A Second Chance
The Fall took my breath away when I first read it. The intensity, the terror, the beauty... I loved each and every second of it, and I know you will too.

Fire Family Week June 2025, day 2 - “Hail Fire Lord...”
Hail Fire Lord Iroh and Crown Prince Zuko!

There's a theory (1, 2) that Azulon did not want to kill Zuko but to make Ozai give his son to Iroh to continue the dynasty. That would be much more humiliating; I believe Ozai would prefer Zuko killed. Anyway this AU has a potential, don't you think so?
I've read in a chinese fairytale that the left side is more important since the heart is on the left. And Azula in "Sozin's Comet, Part 1: The Phoenix King" sat at Ozai's left hand. So I decided this is more important place.
Tagging @waterfire1848 since you're the host, right?

I took my little brother (autistic, mostly non verbal) out and he was using his voice keyboard to tell me something, and this little boy (maybe 4 or 5?) heard him and asked me "Is he a robot??" I tried to explain to him that no, he isn't a robot, he just communicates differently, but my darling brother was in the background max volume "I am robot I am robot I am robot I am robot"

Ty Laru headcannons
i know what you're thinking: this thing came out from the Chibi shorts, and Haru and Ty Lee don't even meet in ATLA!
But but.....
Why not?
These are all my headcannons that support a certain theory i'll talk later about......
They could have met the first time at Zuko's coronation, but probably they wouldn't have even talked. But then Ty Lee became a member of the Kyoshi Warriors, and this gives her the possibility to travel to the Earth Kingdom
Maybe it's a festival in Kyoshi island: a good reason to leave the Fire Nation with her comrades and go to the Earth Kingdom.
During this festival she can meet Haru: he is a friend of the Avatar, Zuko knows him. I don't believe it's love at first sight, but they meet again later, in a mission of the Kyoshi Warriors around Haru's village.
They have the chance of work togheter, and Ty Lee finds this guy pretty great. Haru is brave and kind, the same things that Ty Lee possibly liked about Sokka (??)
In the moment they become a couple they have a few problems with Haru's father, who doesn't exatly like Firenation people. They have a bad time there, but thanks to Mai, who supported Ty Lee and helped her with the old man, they can get together with Haru's father approval.
Haru would move in Caldera because of Ty Lee's job as part of Zuko's guards, but the Firelord and the Earth King give him the role of contact between their two countries, so often he travels in the Earth Kingdom too.
They has two child. The first one has Izumi's age, and they'll be best frineds as Mai and Ty Lee are. The second one was born years later, when both of her parents are kinda old. It's Pema.
I bet you heard the theories already, they are not mine, credit to whoever invented them (you're great).
There is the most famous theory about Ty Lee, that she is the descendant of some airbenders. And then someone said that Pema may be Ty Lee's daughter bc they kinda look alike. And it isn't weird that all of Pema and Tenzin's sons/daughter (don't know about Rohan but let's say he is) are airbenders? It's a great thing, ofc, but even a couple as Aang and Katara, both benders, has a son who is a non-bender. And Pema, a non bender, and Tenzin has three/four children who can bend? Maybe.... because of Ty Lee legacy. It's normal that children of non bender people can be benders (as Katara). Maybe Ty Lee's airbenders ancestors bending went throught the family till Pema's children? This could mean nothing, Pema could be daughter of some other airbender descendant, but that's how i like to see that:)
