One of the grossest things I’ve ever tried to make is a homemade balloon. I was eleven. Hiromi San was nineteen. Eroded by time and distance, my flawed memory credits all the blame to her. For the one year that we lived together, she slept in my room I slept on the floor in the hallway by the front door. She had lots of ideas. Example: green tea ice cream with hot fudge, whipped cream, mandarin oranges and Oreos is called an “oooper” and should be eaten after dinner many times per week. Or If you copy the characters I write and send this letter to my parents they will send more than five pounds of rice from our family farm. Or This toxic colored glue stuff that you dab on the end of a straw and blow into seems fun… let’s make balloons! At the time her hair was short. Mine was long. Golden locks curling and cascading past my shoulders. Sure, the goo held air and from a distance it looked balloonish. Up close though, it was like a magnet for skin and hair. What a mess. I miss you Hiromi. You and your Milky’s and your fermented plums and your succulent short grain rice. Polished like pearl. —————————- Soft water at 60c. Counter intuitive First infusion at 120 seconds. Savory soup like a craveable mushroom broth. Even after the first three infusions were done I experimented with water temp and steep time for another four rounds. Curiosity driving me forward. Body sensations creeping warm up my neck. It came in an eight gram tin so pretty that I want to scrub the sticker off and save it for a century. Gaiwan hot to the touch. Put the leaves in. Shake, agitate, lift the lid. Inhale. I spent an entire day drinking this tea. Opening bell at 9:59am. Forced myself to stop at 5:12pm. Still going was the tea. Floating through ferns and moss forest I soaked up sun like lizard like butterfly. Headphone levels creeping up louder. Shoulder shimmies. Awkward dude dance moves. Makin’ beats. The clay came dark out the bag. Dark like chocolate. Dark like mole. I’d come home from a long night in the studio and look in the mirror. Face, ears, hair, hat, shirt, pants, headphones… all covered. As the piece entered the bisque kiln I savored the richness, knowing it would fade in the heat. 35 hours later it emerged, a soft seashell pink. I savored that stage too, appreciated the glow that reminded me of the ocean and of my grandparents, the shower in their guest bathroom almost the same color. The inside of the gaiwan and the lid both glazed a simple white. The exterior left bare. Extracting it from the glaze firing it came out coffee ice cream with intriguing black speckles. Gentle on the eyes. To the touch: rough enough to cut. Running water, fine grain sandpaper, elbow grease… the ingredients for the final touch: a soft-finished exposed exterior clay body, smooth in the hand. Grounding. Earth-like. 90ml measured to the lid. A perfect pour. Plum Beauty from @bitterleafteas as the mercury flickered between 99 and 100, a soft breeze commuting down river. Just testing my wares I say. A hundred bucks a month. That’s what it cost my father to rent the *ahem* auxiliary dwelling unit on the walnut ranch way way way way back in 1991. Jordan was chasing title number one of six and pops and me were figuring out every Thursday’s and every other weekends. Little ladder to a loft space; futon mattress on the floor. Hot dogs and a black and white TV with Mash on. Space invaders on the Atari. Kept a machete on the porch. Called it the Samurai Sword. Tossed overripe watermelon and zucchini into the air and swung like a baby Babe Ruth. Old yellow moped buzzing like a dying wasp. I got wedged between lap and handlebars as we’d swerve through the trees, balding tires not meant for taking on tough colossal walnut shells. At the far end of the acreage was a fence. It served to represent differentiation but we were not to be dissuaded. We were Mario and Luigi riding a tamed and rattling Bowser ready to the save the Princess. Peach. Princess Peach. Sneak sneak we would enter. In the orchard like spies. Looking for the ripe ones the heavy hangers the succulent.
