I work at a daycare with infants.
One of our baby girls is fat, in the 99th percentile for her age. She is super cute and sweet. Lately, she has been sick with various breathing issues, so she has been reluctant to take her bottles. Normally, she’ll take 4 ounces of formula at lunch and 8 ounces in the afternoon. Today, I was lucky to get to her take 5 all day.
There was a substitute covering a lunch break in my classroom today. We emphasized to her that we need to keep trying to get the baby to drink her bottle until she finished it. She said, “Why are you guys so worried about taking her bottle?”
My coworker replied, “That’s where all her nutrients are. She needs the nutrients and the water.”
To which the substitute replied, “But she’s so fat. She doesn’t need it.”
Thin privilege is a small, pretty baby getting better childcare because the caretaker doesn’t think she’s too fat to be allowed to eat.

the thing about holmes and watson is that its tempting to read it as a weirdguy x normie relationship but thats a misreading of watson who is also, and this is important, a freak

k so lets talk abt this one drug decriminalization talking point ive seen going around in leftist circles by people that seem to mean well but ultimately are wrong: "addicts should be forced to go to rehab, not prison"
Great! We've agreed that drug addicts shouldnt go to prison! But youre still not quite there.
Quite a few times throughout my addiction i was faced with this ultimatum: go to some sort of rehab/detox center or we cut you off. I went out of fear, not because i wanted to get clean or help myself and yknow what the first thing i did was when i left rehab? more heroin. I just got better at hiding it out of fear of losing friends/family. (The only reason I'm clean now is because my most recent trip to rehab was one that I initiated myself.)
And that is exactly what will happen if people are forced to go to a rehab center instead of prison. Its about as helpful as sending them to prison for the same thing. And its dangerous as well because the majority of deaths from drug overdoses are relapses. Forcing addicts into prison OR rehab when they do not want it is guarenteed to result in deaths.
Forcing someone to be held in a facility against their will due to their addiction doesnt really sound like "decriminalization" to me. That sounds like a better prison.
What it really comes down to is this: addicts deserve to be treated well whether or not theyre trying to get better. Addicts deserve food and shelter just like everyone else no matter what. Their life does not become more valuable just because they got clean or theyre working on themselves. Their lives are already valuable because they are a human being. The idea of a life being "valuable" is fascist shit anyways but this is the only kind of language yall internet leftists seem to understand.
The answer is and always has been harm reduction and voluntary treatment.
I know you would like to think that if we just forced them to go to rehab theyd come out the other side perfect and remain clean forever but thats not reality. It doesn't lead me to believe you actually know anything about extreme addictions. You need to work on cleansing yourself of this internal conditioning that tells you people have to get clean, that we have to force them to get clean, because it won't work. Harm reduction and therapy is the answer and with harm reduction and therapy comes, a lot of times, voluntary recovery that will last a lifetime.
Forced rehab will do absolutely nothing.
Next time you want to use that talking point, take a moment and reflect on why you think addicts lives are only valuable when theyre clean/working on getting clean, and why you think its ok to strip them of all their autonomy. Not exactly "leftist" of you.
