The ship comes gliding in out of the fog, huge and cold and silent, her sails furled, though there is no wind at all, as if she were sailing on some motor, though by the total silence surrounding, Captain Fitzjames knows there is no motor aboard.

She is sailing without motor and without sail.

First Lieutenant Le Vesconte collapses his spyglass and smiles. "Let's board her," he says, and Fitzjames opens his mouth to respond when he catches Commander Crozier's eye across the way, his eyebrow raised, his mouth set tight.

Sails furled, no colors flying, this ship is unknown, unsafe, and you know better than this, James, you know we need to keep sailing, you know we're not at war.

"HMS Vengeance," Third Lieutenant Mair says, reading the name off the ship's transom before either captain can speak as he joins them at the taffrail, looking up at the vessel towering over them. "Was that not the scourge of the Royal Navy in those times before Napoleon?"

All eyes turn to him, and he shrinks into his coat.

"You know," Mair continues hesitantly, "The legends about Captain Rafferty and his black flag of England and how no one could catch him and all that..." He trails off, and now Second Lieutenant Little speaks, voice quiet and hushed and scared,

"She's signaling. She wants us onboard."

Another disclaimer I have to inform you of is that Jean is VERY asshole here (as the tags say, he’s fascist, but we’ll fuck the bigotry out of him). He’s racist and homophobic and nasty, but he also has his good sides. I love him sooo much, and I love Kim sooo much and I had SO much fun writing this.

great first contribution to this fandom LOL anyways idk i just had a need to draw them in pretty period accurate dresses. completely self-indulgent art. something about men with black hair in red dresses that really works out in my brain also something about um. complementary green hm what was that im losing my mind yeah thats ok this is normal i swear to god im normal

sketches trying to figure them out btw. not the prettiest bc well they're test sketches. but yeah ive been in disco elysium for 3/4 of a year, i figured i could draw 44 year old and 57 year old men (going by the actors' ages, idk how old they r). literally no big step up LOL. anyways i fucking LOVE drawing men. ok. the shapes. and the crinkles. it's just really fucking fun. and also different shapes bw them????? jf is taller (6 ft 1) but narrower and fc is slightly shorter (5 ft 10. it's literally jean and harry's height difference (from disco elsyium)) but he's broader. its SO COOL. ugh. good shit

la revacholiére I AM THE CITY

a fragment of the world spirit, the genius loci of revachol YOU ARE THE FUTURE

wanted to do a kim pinup and it became religious in nature as is natural to happen. something about revealing himself to harry and being comfortable with that and harry seeing him as what he is: revachol, the city that loves him. so i put the flag of revachol behind kim, with it's seal cut out bc that's the flag of revolution, and thru the hole, the bay of revachol and one of those revachol sunsets

flag btw^ black for capitalism and new money, gold for kingdom and old money (it's actual metallic shiny / glittery / shimmery fabric), blue is the moralism / moralintern that binds them. lion symbol of suzerainty, skua original symbol of revachol that's been on the very very first flag before the kingdom (truly symbolizes the colonialism). the red arc is from the suzerainty's flag where it has the 6 suns, and then the islands are all the nations of the coaliton maybe? i don't remember actually. skua has the moralintern forget-me-not in it's beak. i think actually there would be the symbol of the coalition (5 black bars with a gold square between them) in the middle there instead of the islands but eh.

also my kim becomes leader of the revolution agenda. and it's like yeah. you're fucking the guy who keeps up such a strong, closed-off front, who is basically revachol's last hope (well, the leader of the people who are the last hope because he doesn't do it alone), but because you are his partner in everything, you are the one privileged to see his real self, mask off entirely

and why not harry well because harry's arc is to choose himself. to stop trying to sacrifice himself for everything. to let go of trying to be the savior, to choose to work on himself instead of the city. whereas kim's arc is choosing to pursue his dreams, choosing to make a difference, choosing to lead instead of choosing himself and choosing a comfortable, safe life as he's been choosing for the past twenty years

harry has spent his whole life chasing dragons, choosing to save everyone but himself. now it's time to save himself

kim has spent his whole life hiding away, choosing only to save himself. now it's time for him to slay dragons. you know????

also i love drawing pinups so much bc i love just. adding so much man details. i really want to draw some nudes and do scar mapping bc i wish i was more consistent with the scars bw the men drawings. incredibly important to me that kim is wrinkly btw. imagine also he smells of pine sap and all of that. also a nitpick but he wouldn't touch himself with his gloves on coz well he doesn't want to get them dirty, but it's just required to draw him with them. also also his necklace is too long and i wish his hand weren't covering it but it's the orthodox cross. he never takes it off. and yes idgaf i like kim with diamond glasses, idc what the art says, i like it when he has some little spark of something very very slightly personality. like yes he goes to work and goes into work mode and all of that, but like. he's just a little bit budging and choosing things for himself. idc. OH re scars i read some fic somewhere that kim's scars are different from the other officers bc he's got a lot of shit from knife fights bc he worked juvie, so less gunshots and other shit and more getting shanked and stabbed

comparing case notes on the ride home at the end of a long day

did all the perspective myself! it kinda' turned out jank but it's what it's. i'll get better at it eventually

really tried to capture the essence of revachol architecture style with this. the metro lines were built by the communards in '79 of the last century, about 11 years into the dictatorship. various cities in revachol have metro, but none are as extensive as jamrock's metro. however, due to mismanagement and embezzlement and war, a lot of the metro stations remain unfinished, especially in the poorest parts of the city (for example, it was never finished in the coal city district of jamrock, which is big enough to count as it's own city. the metro line was dug out, but the tracks were never layed due to the project never reaching completion and due to the commies not really caring to build out there. in the valley of the dogs, which is in west jamrock and about as poor as coal city, the metro wasn't even built at all due to there being a huge immigrant population out there and a lot of bullshit from the government). anyways a lot of homeless people live out in those abandoned stations. this among a billion other things really adds to how much east revachol and its slightly richer cities really think lowly of west revachol and jamrock

the metro cars and the metro stations are built in the neo-perikinassian style that the communards favored for all their structures (neo-perikinassian is an elysium equivalent to our neo-classical style). this style intends to give a vibe of old world richness and power and strong authoritative government, while also attempting to create a strong, national revacholian architectural style, celebrating insulinde's original pagan origins by reflecting traditional folk patterning. communism in revachol wanted to be purely revacholian, taking zero influence from the colonies that revachol used to rule over. the dictatorship did away completely with insulinde's original colonial past, trying to embrace a new totally revacholian identity and erasing anything deemed not revacholian. unfortunately, revachol is an immigrant country, with a history of colonialism and slavery, and a LOT of that has become a huge part of revacholian and insulindian culture. revachol is a melting pot, a mixture of influences from all over. the communists tried to erase this and make a new identity, but of course this attempted to erase everything else that makes revachol revachol. so in trying to make a new, purely revacholian identity, they erased true revachol from the books.

anways, they favored the neo-perikinassian art style with folk embellishments, but because revachol is revachol, there are also a whole lot of style moderne (revachol's art deco, a lot of airships, sunrises, and anti-pale shit) and noul stil (revachol's art nouveau which involves a lot of ocean and air organic motifs instead of flowers and the like) influences of course. in fact, to go on yet another tangent, revachol's 'new disco' architecture, which started in jamrock during the new with the building of skyscrapers and new buildings in the style and spread to the rest of revachol, is a modern day revival of style moderne and noul stil that combines elements of both (i get a very og wizard of oz emerald city vibe).

anyways that's my lore essay. i really wanted to capture the feeling of being in revachol, specifically jamrock. the metro cars are also slightly based off bucharest's communist metro cars as well as the newer ones, but of course with a lot of wood instead because revachol and elysium are in a sort of era with their technology that mixes something of a industrial revolution 1890s victorian london, 1910s america and big cities right before the advent of skyscrapers and cars but also 1920s tech, and 1970s radio tech and all that shit. idk. some fucked up conglomeration

also guy on the left is someone from my de server's oc. i don't know their tumblr otherwise i'd tag!

oh and i tried to capture some kind of how the people of revachol are in general all types of people from many different ethnicities etc. and and the guy in the back looking at harry is one of jean's friends, enzo, who, after getting rejected from the rcm for being too violent (which is a big deal bc the rcm celebrates violence), joined la puta madre and now works to double-cross both lpm and rcm, doing what benefits him best. when jean and harry got captured by the lpm about 3 years back and almost died, it was enzo who saved them. enzo's one of jean's many connections he has in the city. harry doesn't remember him (but he will eventually. he has to figure out at some point where that big nasty scar on his stomach's from).

btw i spent like a wholeass hour or two one day trying to figure out what type of wood revachol would have because the commies use ONLY LOCAL RESOURCES. so i needed to figure out what type of wood they'd have. and i figured it was some kinda' birch with a very specific ashy grey wood. of course you can't see it here bc of the color-grading but yeah. know that i did research on that. ok?
