Book 74 was a library book. I've been wanting to pick it up since I've enjoyed the author's other works.

It's a horror/mystery about an island that the main character is renting out. Weird stuff has been found by the renters. There's hex circles, bloody claw marks in the closets, etc. So she heads to the island with her niece to investigate. Once there, they're joined by her ex husband, his sister, their high school friend and her brother. Each excuse for them being there was flimsier than the last, but we needed a cast.

This one did not land. At all. The concept was interesting, and the start was fine. It was first person, which I don't tend to like, but I was interested in whatever was going on with the island. Then I realized the main character annoyed the fuck out of me, which sucked since it was from her perspective so I couldn't get away. It also had the self-insert author vibe a bit, especially with the "I'm a ~writer~, so I know better than you" moments. I know it probably wasn't meant that way, but it gets on my nerves.

The mystery was fine, but it felt like the mysterious happenings and questions weren't given long enough before the characters were trying to shove some explanation onto the reader, if that makes sense. Way too rushed in a lot of aspects like that.

There was some good suspense, and some of the body horror was quite good, but it spent way, way too much time on the will-they-won't-they second chance romance and the drama going on between them all.

Like this? This went on for so many pages.

And it wouldn't have been so bad if IT WAS ACTUALLY A DRAMATIC REVEAL. The ✨totally artful✨ concealment of the subject gave it away almost instantly, so every time they tiptoed around the subject- trying to not let the audience know- it felt insulting. There was literally a point where the MC and her ex were talking, and it did a fade to black, and then a "I can't believe she asked you that!"

Plus it just felt. How do I say this. Performative? In the explanation she's giving. The whole interaction just rings hollow, partially because the characters aren't well developed.

Another annoying passage. Idk, I just really, really didn't like her. She was such a doormat with everyone, and kept doing stupid shit. Too stupid to live.

AND ANOTHER THING. The whole "You're really my daughter" thing (besides being dumb) brought into question a whole bunch of stuff. You kept your rapists baby, kept in contact with his sister, and let them both on your island?

And you were fifteen. I know it was supposed to come off as self-sacrificial, but that kind of made me hate the sister. I don't care if you're infertile, you let your fifteen year old sister carry her rapist's baby to term just so you could have it??

I think it's because it's such a real and hard topic that using it in this kind of drama pisses me off and I get real heated about the characters 😅

The ending was.... Fine, I guess. I had to force myself to finish, and at that point, I was like, "fine, sure, the island was summoned somehow. Sure, the Scooby-Doo plot of someone trying to drive you to sell also happened. Why not". It was incredibly heavy-handed in the message, which came across as yet more telling-not-showing.

Not the worst book I've read, but I am glad I borrowed it instead of impulse buying it.

The plot for a majority of this volume of the dark crime soap opera is this:

The criminal organization was playing a "death game" and killing off loose ties that could give their whole shady business away. The second death was a "hit by unmanned truck that burst into flames" number. Xie Qingcheng's parents died exactly like that, so he's like "?????? THEY killed my parents 19 years ago?? I have to find out why and who." Fair.

He Yu is like, "Bet. You helped me with my psychological ebola and treated me like a normal person, so I'll use my elite hacker skills to help you." No other reason.

So they hack their transmission and find out they're going to bomb the library and hightail it over there, jamming the detonation signal.

The criminal hacker guy is like, "There's only one guy who can do this."

And who steps up to see? HE YU'S MOM. She's a part of the criminal organization that killed Xie Qingcheng's parents and almost got Xie Xue killed!

It's terrible but I'm over here gasping and clutching my pearls like my late aunt watching General Hospital.

As everyone who recs this says, mind the trigger warnings.

This one was a five for me. I can't wait for the next volume.

The epilogue kind of annoyed me 😅 It felt unnecessary, like the Harry Potter epilogue. Like, "these people got together and those two had this amount of babies-". I don't care. Should have left it on the "hopeful future" note.

So. Infinity Castle happened. I'm going to speed run my experience.

On the topic of ships. A rant, if you will.

The epilogue kind of shoehorned in a lot of relationships just to pair characters off, which is not my favorite thing. Like Tanjiro and Kanao, I could see. There was a base for that, as underdeveloped as it was. But Zenitsu and Nezuko? It felt like it was "Oh, he really really liked her, so obviously she'd end up with him". He doesn't know the first thing about her, really. She spent the entirety of the series unable to talk, going through all this with her grown brain locked away, and him acting really weird and obsessive with her, and you expect me to just accept that?? No thank you.

Don't even get me started on Inusuke.

One of my biggest accomplishments this year is reading the entirety of the Demon Slayer series. It was my friend's choice when I asked last year. I was going to get to it eventually.

Then the latest season came out. When she mentioned that Infinity Castle is the last arc and it would be hard to avoid spoilers, I committed to reading the books. I don't mind spoilers for some things, but I wanted to experience the intensity and devastation firsthand without knowledge of who lives or dies.

So she just bought the box set.

Long post incoming. Rambling thoughts and pictures I saved.

There's just something about the art that anime doesn't fully have.

I love how much they added in the anime, especially for combat. But the manga is good at the interpersonal relationships, and characterization. It's the small things.

And look at Inosuke!! Much cooler. And Shinobu frizzing up the lady demon.

This? Sick as hell.

I'll probably do a separate post for Infinity Castle.

4.5/5 stars overall. It wasn't perfect, and the (spoilers) giant baby(???) at the end was weird, but the characters are great, the story was good, and I would definitely reread this.

This one felt like a folk tale, and I loved it. It had magic, and an established relationship, and curses, and cats. And her.
