"Xenon?" Liana whispered, slipping into the room.

That was her first sign something was wrong.

The bed was neatly made, the room tidy, and yet the small trinkets and neatly placed books once on his desk were gone.

She checked under his bed. No suitcase.

She checked the closet. No suitcase.

Did he leave? And why?

Engrossed in her thoughts, she almost didn't hear the flutter of a piece of paper, a note hurriedly stuck on the desk.

He wasn't sure how they had stayed up that late. But when the hour hand ticked towards twelve, Liana finally turned to look at him.

Maybe she was surprised he was still here. He couldn't be sure. The light from the moon was long gone now, the street lamps barely enough to illuminate her silhouette, let alone her expression.

Xenon swallowed, feeling a glob of saliva slide down his dry throat. "Are you going to die?" He forced the words out of him.

Liana didn't answer. Her fingers trailed across the cool glass surface [of the window]. She was facing him, sure, but he just couldn't be sure that she really was looking straight at him.

"Everyone dies someday," she murmured, as if not answering his question but rather her own. "The real question is when."

She almost seemed to be lost in a trance as she slipped away, or maybe it was he who was spellbound.

He watched as she locked her bedroom door behind her, before realizing she never really gave an answer. Or maybe she meant yes.

As maybe she wasn't entranced. Maybe she was just tired.

Of everything.

1. Are you named after anyone?

Liana shifts uncomfortably in her seat.

L: No.

Xenon doesn't seem to notice.

X: Nope. You ever heard of anyone named Xenon? Exactly.

2. When was the last time you cried?

L: Dunno.

She says this a little too quickly.

X: Forgot.

He's glancing down at the floor.

3. Do you have kids?

Xenon and Liana glance at each other with a 'Is she serious' look in their eyes.

L: We're 16 and 17.

X: Thank you.

4. Do you use sarcasm a lot?

L: Meh. I like to get straight to the point, but sometimes I will.

X: Like, really little.

5. What's the first thing you notice about people?

L: Their gaze. It literally shows everything. Whether they're sad, angry, bored, they don't even try to hide it.

X: Now I sound boring. Appearance.

L: And also shallow. :)

6. What's your eye color?

X: Just grey.

L: Just grey? Just grey? Mine is literally dark brown, aka the most common color out there.

7. Scary movies or happy endings?

X: Scary movies.

L: Happy endings- What?

X: I feel alive when I watch them, ok?

L: Honestly, never would have guessed.

At this, Xenon glances down at the floor.

8. Any special talents?

X: Archery. And chess.

Liana stays silent. At this, the dark figure in the shadows raises a sign saying 'Haven't figured it out yet'.

9. Where were you born?

The figure raises the same sign.

10. Do you have any hobbies?

L: I mean... video games.

The figure confirms the rest has not been thought about.

L: As for Xenon, he has none.

X: Offended. Video games, TV show binging and archery.

11. Have you any pets?

They both shake their heads.

12. What sports have you played?

X: Uh- Archery and chess.

Liana hesitates before answering.

L: I do a morning run sometimes, I guess.

13. How tall are you?

Xenon: 168 something.

L: Last time I checked, 168.9.

14. Favorite subject in school?

X: Honestly, nothing there really stands out to me as my favorite. If we were talking about my least favorite-

L: ... Look it's complicated. I don't think the author knows either.

The dark figure in the corner nods.

15. Dream job?

L: I'm 16. No one knows what to do at this age.

X: Hopefully, when the time comes, I'll think of something.

The figure bows and exits stage left quietly, fixing the fourth wall as she goes.

How do you all decide what pov/tense to use in a story? Is it the same one every time, your special favorite you will take to your grave? Is there one you will not touch with a 39 and a half foot pole? Do you think some work better for certain types of stories and not others? Please, give me the POV and tense discourse.

Tagged by the lovely @macabremoons! Since I already answered this for Crys, I'm going to answer for Icarus this time.

Are you named after anyone? Nope, but he did choose his last name - Kal-Nira - after his moms, Kali and Nira. Beasts generally don't have last names, but he wanted something to remember them by.

When was the last time you cried? Hmm. He's actually pretty emotional and open about his feelings, so quite recently. If we're talking the last time he cried in the wip uh... yeah that's a spoiler.

Do you have kids? He's 17, so no, but he loves playing with the kids in the Grove.

Do you use sarcasm a lot? Very rarely, and only when bantering but never as a means of insulting someone. He's simply too nice for that.

What’s the first thing you notice about people? Threat levels, because you learn to be cautious when you're a Beast and the world is against you. He also tends to see the best in people, though, so besides that it would be positive qualities - and oh, their expressions and how they're feeling, due to his high empathy.

What’s your eye color? I'd describe it as onyx or obsidian if I wanted to be fancy, but honestly it's just. Plain black.

Scary movies or happy endings? Happy endings, without question.

Any special talents? Not particularly (because I haven't figured it out yet shhhhhh-), but if he did have any it would probably be something odd and largely insignificant, like a random skill that would make for a good party trick (sorry, Ink).

Where were you born? A hidden Beast village, somewhere close to where Kosei's Border was at the time. Possibly in the New Territory? But then Kosei got pushed back and the war swept down south towards them, and, well. You can guess what happened.

What are your hobbies? Genuinely he has like. So many. He's just super curious and interested in everything, so he's picked up a bunch of stuff over the years - mudlarking, woodwork, paper folding, knitting, cooking (but he tends to burn stuff in the kitchen), etc etc. He also reads a lot of human books trying to understand their culture, but the anti-Beast sentiments get pretty tiring after a while so he steers clear of mythology/religious books.

Have you any pets? Nope, but he is fond of cats (though they keep on trying to eat him when he's in bird-form).

What sports do you play/have played? Does swordfighting and flying count?

How tall are you? About 175-180cm. A tall boi.

Favorite subject in school? He doesn't really have much of a preference, but he loves to learn new things in general. Magic theory's difficult though.

Dream job? He'd probably need to be eligible to apply for jobs first... (and, you know, not get attacked on sight due to being Beast and everything)

Heyy I'm Ly Thi Minh, and nope I'm not named after anyone. Honestly though, with how common my name is in Vietnam, I very well could be lmao

Well that escalated quickly.

I only just turned 15 so if I do have one, be sure to attend my funeral tomorrow!

Their threat levels. Practically speaking, what else would you notice?

Dark brown. There's not much variety in Southeast Asia, I'm afraid.

Happy endings. Why would I want to deliberately make myself miserable?? Please, if I wanna scare myself, all I need to do is look in the mirror 😂

I recently discovered that I'm freakishly good at dodging shit, so let's go with that.

Vietnam, in New Hanoi! It was my childhood home and 75% of it got reduced to rubble :)

Now I live in Lorelei, United States. It kinda sucks but it's also kinda cool. You can say that I have a... Love-hate relationship towards it, I guess. I had to leave, obviously, of course I had to, but it's not exactly a crime to miss it, y'know??

10) What are your hobbies?

I used to do jigsaw puzzles. I even got into a Facebook group where we borrowed puzzles from a shared collection and Kalisha would help me frame up my pieces 'round the house. We haven't done that in a while though... The last one I did was a really cool piece of various Pokémon with a stained glass window effect. Kalisha bought it for my birthday and she even helped me put it together. I don't think puzzles are really her thing though haha

11) Have you any pets?

Má got a goldfish for me once and I named him Lucky. He died the next day though, so I guess he was actually Unlucky.

12) What sports do you play/have you played?

Barrier Ball! I don't know if you've heard of it but it's a popular game in America where there are goal posts on the ground, in the middle of the air, and high up in the sky. I know that there are other sports where you can use barriers to run around in the air but this is extra fun cause there are some volleyball elements too, like our setter-like midfielder. I actually wanted to do that, but I got forward instead. It's not bad though; it's kinda fun to 'disappear' and come out of nowhere with a shot. Like a sniper :)

5'5... I can't believe I think in feet and inches now; what have I become???

14) Favourite subject in school?

Math, I guess. Once you get into the rhythm, your brain kinda just switches off. It's actually really relaxing.

15) Dream job?

Uhhhhh I don't know. Does anyone really know what they wanna do at this age?

Besides Má, I guess, but that's cause she's crazy over ethreasts. Not everyone has such an obvious passion though, and especially not me :/

I don't really want to reveal too much, not because of suspense or anything, but I feel like there are so many elements in this story that just haven't been determined yet.

What I do know though, without any spoilers:

Set in a world where everyone can mind read by touching the other (again, working things out)

Main characters: Xenon Locklear, Liana Sallow

Liana claims Xenon tried to kill her around a year ago (what's that all about ¯\_(ツ)_/¯)

Title: Mind and Soul

I do really want to write this, so maybe someday I'll post a intro page about it!
