This was a huge project of incorporating 50 objects into a piece that I did this year for one of my classes! There are little references to some of the plants actually mentioned within knh (if you can spot them all, you’re the coolest hehe) as well as some others located/used in China and Japan! ∩^ω^∩

Okay I just finished light novel 13 of the apothecary diaries and oh my God we have to talk about lady Ado, the emperor, and their relationship because I fear we do not truly understand how messed up the situation is for Lady Ado.

I'm being so serious their relationship is not a tragic love story of two people who love each other who never got the chance to be together in the end it is the story of a woman being tied down to a man who loves her but she does not love him in the way he loves her.

I genuinely feel so bad for her because the situation is basically akin to if a girl is friends with a guy and she only ever sees him as a friend but he likes her romantically and he has the power to essentially force her to marry him.

That is there a relationship in a nutshell and it is so very tragic for ado because what do you mean I have been friends with this man since I was a child and I've only ever seen him as a friend yet I am forced to marry him and have his child and that child that I have cannot even be mine because of the Court politics that I never wanted to be in.

Lady Ado is essentially in a cage throughout this novel and she's never allowed to leave the emperor side ever.

I have never seen their relationship as one that is tragic in the sense that it is a tragic love story because since the very beginning I never got the feeling that Lady Ado had any romantic feelings for the emperor. I always knew that she liked him as a friend but that was the extent of her feelings. She never romantically felt anything towards him and like in all honesty lady idol is so very queer coded to me and her situation is just so very tragic.

After reading light novel 13, and hearing her side of the story even though I always had an inkling suspicion that she never truly loved the emperor romantically hearing it from her mouth and listening to her narration of events genuinely has me holding my head in my hands and morning for her because her situation is essentially a bird in a cage and that isn't even like the most accurate way this can be framed.

I just feel so bad for her.

That and the fact that the emperor is literally the word of God in this historical setting so the moment he told her of his feelings she could not reject him because who in the world could reject the emperor.

They are genuinely just friends and he is so very unwilling to let her go and move on to someone else it's insufferable at times and this honestly just makes me think of how the emperor himself even though he knows he is the emperor doesn't seem to truly grasp the fact that because he is the emperor his personal relationships are never going to be deep and meaningful in any way because he always has a profound air of power around him because of his position.

This also showcases in his relationship with Jinshi because his admits at having Jinshi be the crown Prince and completely disregarding his feelings in the matter is just another example of how in his personal relationships he completely forgets that he is an emperor and that his word no matter what context it is in is law. That nobody can deny him anything which leads to what happens with a Jinshi branding himself with his Gyokuyo's seal because it is literally one of the only ways to say no to the emperor.

Moral of the story? Every problem in the apothecary diaries is because a man can't keep it in his pants.

The apothecary diaries worms have me y'all... I might start yapping so hard about this series once finals are over and I'm 100% rereading the lightnovels.

I absolutely love stories about woman navigating politics and this one scratches like every itch its crazy.
