Blizzard

Blizzard Entertainment is a publisher and video game creator located in California. The company is a subsidiary of the company Activision Blizzard. Blizzard is founded originally with the name Silicon & Synapse, Inc. on February 8, 1991. It was founded by Allen Adham, Michael Morhaime and Frank Pearce. The three of them were graduates of the University of California, Los Angeles. At first the company main focus was creating game ports for different studio games. That was before starting creating their software few years later in 1993. The first their own software they created was games like The Lost Vikings and Rock n’ Roll Racing.

The next year the company was renamed to Chaos Studios, Inc. After being obtained by distributor Davidson & Associates, the company became Blizzard Entertainment. Shortly after they changed their name, the company released Warcraft: Orcs & Humans. In addition, the company created several different video games.

Games

This company has created 19 games since it’s founded in 1991. In addition to creating 8 ports between 1992 and 1993, 11 of those games are in the StarCraft, Diablo and of course, Warcraft series. With the release of Orcs & and Humans in 1994, Diablo in 1996 and StarCraft in 1998, the company focus was set on these 3 series. The only exception has been the latest release, Overwatch in 2016. In addition, blizzard also created the trading card game Hearthstone. Moreover, hearthstone is also made android and was released on March 11, 2014.

Franchises

On this day, the company has 4 main franchises and those are Diablo, StarCraft, Overwatch and Warcraft. Each one of the franchise is supported by other media based around its intellectual property such as comics, video shorts, collectible card games and novels. Back in 2006, Blizzard announced that they would produce a Warcraft live-action movie. It was financed and produced by Atlas Entertainment, Legendary Pictures and many others. It was released in 2016 and was distributed by Universal Pictures.

According to a report, in 2012 there were 4,700 employees. It’s noted that they have revenue of $7.017 billion in 2018. The headquarters are in Irvine, California, U.S. and currently it has 9 different studios and offices around the world.

Valve

Valve is a video game developer, digital distribution and publisher company located in Washington. It’s the creator of the platform Steam and many games including Counter-Strike, Half-Life, Team Fortress, Day of Defeat, Dota 2, Portal and Left 4 Dead. Former employees from Microsoft, Mike Harrington and Gabe Newell, founded Valve in 1996. The first software they released was the computer based FPS (first-person shooter) Half-Life in 1998. It was released to critical acclaim and commercial success and that’s after Mike left the Valve Corporation. Few years later, in 2003, Valve launched Steam, which accounted for around half of digital computer game sales by 2011.

History

The company was founded by Mike Harrington and Gabe Newell. Both of them were former employees of Microsoft. It was founded on August 24, 1996 originally under the name Valve L.L.C. The company was located in Kirkland, Washington. Few years later, 2000 to be precise, Mike left the company. In 2003, after incorporation, the company has been relocated to its original location to Bellevue, Washington. Years later in 2010, the office was move once again to a bigger location in Bellevue.

Games

The company has created and published the main games in both the Portal and Half-Life series. In addition, Valve has created one of the Left 4 Dead games and published both. The company has also created and published Artifact, Dota 2, Team Fortress and Team Fortress 2. Few of the company’s series feature only 2 main games such as Half-Life and Half-Life 2. After certain time with no announcement of a third title in the series, the company got a “bad” reputation for being unable to count to three. Later sometime there was an official announcement of Half-Life 3. According to many journalists and players, they have found proof that a sequel remained under active development. Moreover, there are many unreleased games from Valve such as Stars of Blood and Prospero.

According to a report in 2016, Valve had around 360 employees. In addition, it has been noted in several magazines that Valve is worth around $4.1 billion. These days Valve is one of the biggest video game companies around.

Supercell

For those of you who don’t know, Supercell is a Finish mobile game development located in Helsinki. The company was founded on May 14, 2010 by IIkka Paananen. The first game Supercell launched was the browser game named Gunshine.net. It was officially released in 2011 and after that, the company started creating games for mobile devices. Since 2011, Supercell has released 5 full games which are Clash Royale, Hay Day, Clash of Clans, Brawl Stars and Boom Beach. Most of you who’ve tried them know that they are freemium games. Moreover, that may be one of the reasons why they have been so successful for the company. It’s noted that Hay Day and Clash of Clans generated revenue of $2.4 million a day back in 2013.

Back in 2011, Index Ventures and Accel Partners invested $12 million in the Series A of Supercell. 2 years later in 2013 it was announced that GungHo, which is a Japanese company, had obtained 51% of the company. According to a report those 51% were worth $1.51 billion.

Games

Gunshine.net or later got known as Zombies online was the first and only non-mobile based game. It was their first game meant for browser that was released in 2011. However, the servers were completely shut down on November 30, 2012 because of 3 main reasons. The first one was that the game was too difficult to play; the second was that it didn’t interest players enough and the mobile version didn’t work. The biggest success of the company was developing Clash of Clans. It was released on August 2, 2012 and still it’s one of the most played games. Another big hit of the company was creating the battle card game Clash Royale. It’s one of the newer games they’ve developed. They launched the game worldwide on March 2, 2016 for both iOS and Android.

According to a report in 2016, Supercell has 213 employees. Also in the same year it was noted a revenue of €2.1 billion. Last thing to mention about this is that on 21 June 2016, Tencent obtained 84.3% of Supercell for the amount of $8.6 billion.

Android

Created by Google, android is a mobile operating system. It’s manly developed for touchscreen devices like tablets and smartphones. Google has also created Android Auto for cars, Android TV for televisions and Wear OS for wrist watches. Many different types of android are used on digital cameras, game consoles and computers. It was officially released in September 2008. Since then, the operating system has been through many major releases. The newest and current version of android is the 9 “pie” which was released in August 2018. Android is also linked with a suite of proprietary software created by google. The software is named Google Mobile Services that usually comes pre-installed in most devices. That includes the web browser Google Chrome and Google search. In addition, it includes core apps for services like Gmail and the application store called Google Play.

History

The noun android and the name Andrew share the Greek origin Andros, which means man. Andy Rubin picked android.com as his individual site and his associates used android as his nickname. That nickname eventually became the name of the company he founded. In addition, the nickname became also the name of the operating system they created. Originally the company was founded in California in 2003 by Nick Sears, Chris White, Rich Miner and Andy Rubin. Andy described that project as “incredible potential in creating smarter devices that are more alert of its owner’s location and preferences.

The first goals of Android were to create an advanced system for digital cameras. However, sometime later they decided that the market for cameras wasn’t big enough for the goals they had. They changed its efforts and were pitching Android as a handset operating system that could compete with the Microsoft Windows Mobile and Symbian. Andy had a hard time bringing investors and the company was facing eviction from its office space. A close friend of Andy, Steve, gave Andy $10,000 in cash because he wanted to help him.

A year after that, Google bought Android Inc. for at least $50 million. According to some surveys, Google makes about $31 billion a year from Android. These days Android is the biggest competitor to iOS. In addition, Android is one of the biggest companies around the world.
