Phase 2 - Domestic Devices

Site Context : Ayutthaya 

The context in Thailand that can relate to the idea of protection Ayutthaya also known as Historical park, Ayutthaya is located on the island surrounding by 3 rivers the waterways that surrounded the city were useful in terms of protection as creating watery fortress and using waterway as main transportation which river connecting the city to the sea

But nowadays as the increasing level of water causing Ayutthaya to have a seasonal flooding during raining season so in contrast to the past then we have to protect the city from something that once protect city from intruders

The domestic device that use to protect the city is sandbag as it is inexpensive, light and compact there are two primary methods for stacking sandbags to build flood control structures are the single stack placement - work well where is no strong steam flow (0.5-1 m) second is pyramid placement  - to increase the height of sandbag protection (2 m)

The sandbag is temporary structure and take times to construct and prepare also need to repair several time so I decide to design a new permanent barrier that not only function as flood control or fortification but also can form a public infrastructure 

The specific area that I choose is Petch fortress as in the past used to protect the city from attackers and become a historical attraction for people and a place for an event of Thai soap opera called “Destiny Love” where people are wearing Thai traditional clothes for celebration and  having a panic and taking a photo together. So decide to create device that can associate with the site as a infrastructure that can promote tourist and protect the are from flooding that in the future it can be a new prop for tourists as well

Using an unenclosed steel structure can be limited and controlled the used of space which is allowing walls, floors, stairs, and ceiling modules to be moved and assembled.

I try to find the limit of each object in each activity to find the flexibility of that object and possibility of transformation, whether it will create a new activity or not, in formal and non-formal way. By talking flexible and non-flexible into a small unit, it turns into the combination of activities in limited space in order to make the unit become efficiency for every functions and activity. When the layer is changed, it creates different atmosphere and light condition of the room because the window will allow light to shine in and that give different feeling to users.

The design of the building is based on module and column, without these two things, a building cannot be formed. Using an unenclosed steel structure can be limited and controlled the used of space which is allowing walls, floors, stairs, and ceiling modules to be moved and assembled. By stacking and rearranging the modules can create different situation and life style. Even though each module has the same function construction, but the way we construct and use it is different in each building.

FILM :LOGAN’S RUN

 “I identified the dynamic patterns of movement from the film Logan’s Run as a significant characteristic from the film. Based on the network of infrastructural connections from the film, I developed a diagram which signifies the city as an organizational system of lines and connections.”

“The building and circulation are combine together in one system in order to create a city. Starting with forming a column or a building which will arrange according to the grid or pattern.”

1.2 C O N S T R U C T I N G S I T U A T I O N S

My observation of the previous phase I found out that there are so many chairs in this park however all of them are fixed which most people are not using it. The reason for this is not only that it is not comfortable but the position of the chair is also a factor. I also found out that people feel uncomfortable to sit with strangers. Therefore I wanted to design a resting device or a chair that can be movable and involved with social communication and also construct human behavior at the same time.

 For this final project, I think it is better to add more functions to the design. By using the same idea I designed five rooms from different layers by expanding the boundaries(wall) , space is also increasing. The amount and level of space will define the different level of sounds, which help define specific activity for each space (since activities depend on sound).

 My project was inspired by the snail shell, which can be seen as the spiral shape. The main form of spiral shape is that it has many layers, in this case, I took out this particular point and turn it into different wall layers. The layer of walls will cover with a soundproof so these wall layers are the sound insulator.

Create an interface that affect the rituals between the 2 individuals

 “Our concept is interdependence which inter means ‘between’ , so interdependence is a dependence between objects and individuals. In this case, individuals is our bodies and object is our device. So all poses we created are the pose that need the collaborate with each other(both person and device). If one is missing, it won’t be possible to do.”
