These sumptuary laws were quite common throughout the Middle Ages, serving to distinguish the upper and noble classes from the lower, oftentimes citing elaborately flawed logic that in their desperation to obtain fashions, that the lower classes would be driven to law-breaking and such…
In my opinion, it’s proof that punk culture has always existed, and sheds light on the deep roots of the class divides we face today.
