Future of learning
We are on the cusp of understanding so much about the way we learn as humans that learning later on is guaranteed to be more exciting, more useful, and more impact in our lives. And it's also certain to use technology in a vast assortment of learning activities.By understanding what some of those leaps forward might be, I would like you to be even more excited about how you're going to be learning throughout your whole life.Of program, none of us truly knows the future, but given what I've seen through my work with Singularity University, the think tankin Silicon Valley, I can tell you that there are several amazing technologies that are just around the corner. And we can make some very great guesses of where learning may go.So let's fast forward into that future, not tomorrow but not 100 years from now either. You're wearing glasses or maybe contact lenses or even a pendant around your neck, and it may project a 3D image on the world around you, what today we call Augmented Reality. You also have an earbud or perhaps even an implant that resonates against your ear so only you may hear your learning experience. You have a digital learning assistant. That's intelligence software that knows what you've already learned in your life, what you wish to learn, and a lot about your learning style. Now, I think of myself as a visual learner. So I would want to find a lot of pictures and video, but I also don't have a great deal of patience for long videos so I much prefer an enhanced reality experience that lets me become immersed in learning. So let's say you're fascinated by the discovery of radioactivity.Who would be the ideal person to be your guide? Why Marie Curie of course. So you tell your learning assistant that that you wish to hear a lecture on how radioactivity was discovered and suddenly the Nobel Prize winning scientist appears before you,and it's almost impossible to tell that she isn't real. She's sitting in a chair right in front of you and she starts to let you know about her life and her discoveries.Whenever she pauses, you can ask her questions and she answers from her own writings.Your learning assistant tells you that your learning discussion group, which is produced from a dozen people from all over the world with similar interests to yours,is involved on a lively discussion of this exact topic. You agree to hop in and immediately you're in a group call for a dozen video windows appear at the peak of your vision. But your learning assistant doesn't just bring new images into your world, it can annotate the present world as well.Imagine looking at a building or a car engine or a delivery container and being in a position to see a schematic that shows its contents or that could tell you its history or how to repair it.Now the truth is all of the underlying technologies for these sorts of learning activities exist today. The products aren't all as small and unobtrusive as you may want them to be,but you could do everything I've talked about so far with today's technology. We simply must get them to the point where every individual could afford them so which everybody can have these kinds of learning opportunities. So let's take it a step or two farther.Suppose you're wearing a thin lightweight skull cap. That cap can do three-dimensional imaging of your brain as you're learning and determine exactly how well you're taking in information. The software gathering that information talks to your private learning assistant which automatically adjusts to your learning process to improve your learning experience. Now why is it helpful today to envision the learning experiences of tomorrow? It's because technology will increasingly infuse all of our learning experiences.Right now we're just at the very beginning of understanding what technology can do to help us become faster and much better learners. So we can solve harder and more intricate problems. So if you're not yet comfortable with leveraging technology wherever possible in your learning journey, now's a fantastic time to get as familiar as possible so you can be better prepared for tomorrow's learning experiences. If any of these technologies sounds far fetched, remember self-driving cars and trucks were the stuff of science fiction until around 2010. Yet many different exponential technologies came together like fast microprocessors, smart software, robotics, and sensors called lidar, and surprise, cars and trucks could drive themselves. That's why any of these visions I've been talking about could indeed happen tomorrow and then what we thought of as the far distant future of learning will be right here in front of us.
