The final design for my Sinosauropterix acrylic keychains! Im so happy with the design i think the leaves really work. With the prototype that came back i found that the tail was long and prone to snapping so i needed a filler and it turns out that theres an absolutely incredible fossil plant from the same formation as them called Leefructus mirus! Its a prehistoric fossil BUTTERCUP! Ill be selling these at my local con but after that theyll be for same somewhere online possibly kofi?

Walking around my neighborhood wearing my sick as fuck custom T-shirt that says "I STEAL EVERY FRIENDLY CAT I MEET WITH NO REMORSE I DO IT ALL THE TIME DON'T CALL IT A COMEBACK I BEEN HERE FOR YEARS KEEP THAT BEAST ENCLOSED LEST YE FACE MY LIGHTNING CAT GRASP" and smiling politely while my neighbors' indoor-outdoor cats gently trot down the sidewalk towards me as the neighbors themselves read my shirt with a growing sense of panic.

do baby isopods stay near their parent the way your videos seem to suggest? or is that just a coincidence?
as far as I've observed, most common temperate isopods like Porcellio and Armadillidium will stand guard over newborn mancae for a few hours until they're ready to go off on their own. some of the fancy Asian armadillids seem to guard older babies for longer than that, but most isopods only stay near independent juveniles because they happen to be sharing the same bark & clumping together for safety.
there is one isopod, however, with obligate parental care. Hemilepistus reamuri is an agnarid native to Middle Eastern deserts, and they form monogamous pair bonds that raise their offspring in a deep burrow. one parent will forage for food and bring it back for the kids while the other guards them in the burrow, and they will switch duties with each trip. it's a very unique way of life among isopods, and probably an adaptation to desert conditions few other crustaceans could survive.
their little family homes are adorable! makes me wonder if other, less-studied Hemilepistus have a similar lifestyle

“My children, it is you. You are not what we wanted, not what we planned for, but you are my experiment, and you are a success.”
So I just finished Adrian Tchaikovksy's "Children of Time" and it's easily my favorite book of the last decade. I am so emotional over these sentient jumping spiders <3

everything is very bad in this modern age but i truly think Merlin Bird ID App is a wonder so astonishing that it almost makes everything else worth it. like you can just sit somewhere and listen to birds and 4 minutes later you will know stuff you didn't know before. not only that but you might even retain that knowledge. this morning i sat with my coffee and let Merlin record my surroundings for 4 minutes and now i know 1) what a northern parula sounds like 2) that i have been listening to northern parulas for years without being aware that they even existed. this cheerful little gold-and-gray guy has been trilling at me my whole life and i've never known his name and now i do! you can sit there and hear something and think "that sounds familiar, i'd like to know what that is" and then look down and see the little bird ID light up LIVE. ohhh of course, a red-eyed vireo, how could i have forgotten. AI good actually.
#merlin works best in the united states but can work in other countries as well#depending on data abundance#it is really nice to go to a new place and sit down with merlin on and just see what it thinks is around#it isn't foolproof#sometimes it mixes up birds a bit#but it at least gives you an idea of what to look for#and now you have a recording you can follow up on and do more research if needed#anyway merlin bird ID has been there for me since i started birding#back before it even had sound ID#i owe it a lot :)#birding

youre monogamous? oh… it’s ethical, right? ethical monogamy? okay good for you! i mean pretty much every monogamous couple i’ve met didn’t work out but maybe you guys will beat the odds! haha. so is it a sex thing? you guys have sex with- just each other? huh. how does that work? i could never do monogamy, i’m too jealous, i’d worry my partner would leave me for someone else instead of dating us both… how do you deal with the jealousy? is it hard? like, how hard? extremely? do you think you’ll break up? i mean in the long run these things rarely work out,
