People used to comment on web comics.
People used to comment on fanfiction.
People used to comment on fanart.
People used to comment on OCs.
I hate "content" culture.
I hate "consuming content" and scrolling immediately to the next thing.
People used to be excited about the art that other people created.
People used to want to share that excitement with creators.
I hate this future.
#commenting#fic#honestly#getting comments and stuff makes me more excited to work on stuff more#makes me feel like what I'm making is actually making people happy and that they're enjoying what I make#otherwise it feels like I'm just rowing this boat myself in the void#eventually I just get tired

I've already said that my number one piece of writing advice is to read.
But my number two piece of advice is this: be deliberate.
Honestly this would fix so many pieces of bad writing advice. Don't forbid people from doing something, tell them to be conscious and deliberate about it. This could help stop people from falling into common mistakes without limiting their creativity. Black and white imperatives may stop a few annoying beginner habits, but ultimately they will restrict artistic expression.
Instead of "don't use epithets": "Know the effect epithets have and be deliberate about using them." Because yes, beginners often misuse them, but they can be useful when a character's name isn't known or when you want to reduce them to a particular trait they have.
Instead of "don't use 'said'" or "just use 'said'": "Be deliberate about your use of dialogue tags." Because sometimes you'll want "said" which fades into the background nicely, but sometimes you will need a more descriptive alternative to convey what a character is doing.
Instead of "don't use passive voice": "Be deliberate about when you use passive voice." Because using it when it's not needed can detract from your writing, but sometimes it can be useful to change the emphasis of a sentence or to portray a particular state of mind.
Instead of blindly following or ignorantly neglecting the rules of writing, familiarize yourself with them and their consequences so you can choose when and if breaking them would serve what you're trying to get across.
Your writing is yours. Take control of it.
It probably sounds like I'm preaching to the choir here because most of my mutuals are already great writers. But I'm hoping this will make it to the right people.
#writing#writing advice#THIS#THIS IS WHAT DRIVES ME INSANE ABOUT BEGINNERS STARTING WRITING#the amount of people saying DO NOT THIS and DO NOT THAT#NO#the most important thing WHAT EFFECT YOU WANT YOUR WRITING TO HAVE#and that means understanding what effect everything does#I use said I use words other than said sometimes I don't use dialogue tags at all#they all have a different feel to them#when I want my writing to feel like it's going fast I'm going to write short sentences#it doesn't matter that it makes them a little boring#it matters that it makes my reader read through them more quickly and makes them feel as rushed as the character#when I want to slow down I'll write more elaborate sentences#when do I write a wall of text? when I purposefully WANT the reader to disengage BECAUSE THE CHARACTER IS#it's all about what effect you want your writing to have and whether or not you've achieved it#I once wrote a story in a journal format#where the further it went#the more and more typos began appearing#why?#because the character writing it was getting sleep deprived and was actively being hunted#you think he's going to carefully be thinking about whether a word should be capitalized or how a word is supposed to be spelled?#no! he's not going to be focusing on that#for every “do not” rule I've found that you actually CAN if what the effect they cause is what you want

Gawd the emotional vs logical brain, and also the hardward brain vs software brain, they drive me INSANE
the emotions/logic for the reasons OP said above
the hardware/software brain....
like okay look, our software brain is SO advanced, look at the world we live in! We've put people on the moon! We can cut people open with knives to help them live longer, we've made machines that can break the sound barrier, like that is some insane stuff. And then hardware brain is STILL living back in hunter/gatherer days where like the amount of programs it has that it can run, probably numbers in the single digits
and then we're faced with situations like, idk job interview or whatever, something only software brain could've come up with. Except software brain doesn't have the program for interview, so it goes knocking on hardware brain's door like:
Software brain: Hey, we got an interview coming up. You got anything for that? Hardware brain: OH INTERVIEWS! that's a CLASSIC I've got just the thing! Here! :) Software brain: Hardware brain: Software brain: This is the "OMG A BEAR IS ABOUT TO FUCKING EAT ME" program. Hardware brain: yeah! It's a classic! Software brain: THIS IS AN INTERVIEW. THERE ARE NO BEARS Hardware brain: are you SURE? Software brain: Hardware brain: Software brain: Shit you're right. Run the program
AND NOW WE HAVE ANXIETY THAT WE CANT FIX BECAUSE THERE IS NO BEAR
SOOOOO funny when you’re having a strong emotion and your logical brain KNOWS you’re overreacting but you literally can’t do anything about it.
#shitpost#brains#this dichotomy is the absolute BANE of my existence#therapy would be so much easier if these two halves would just GET WITH THE PROGRAM#listen LISTEN#I DONT CARE IF LOGIC BRAIN SUDDEN AGREES WITH EMOTIONAL BRAIN#AT LEAST I GET THEM ON THE SAME PAGE AND THEN I CAN WORK THROUGH IT#The worst part is that emotional/hardware brain seems to have the most control over how we physically feel :/

With Easter fast approaching with its spiked rabbit sales and subsequent spiked rabbit abandonment rates, I thought I’d use my powers for good by spreading some information I think everyone should know before they get their first bunny. I usually don’t want people reposting my art, but feel free to spread this one around! Reblogs are very, very appreciated. If you want more information about pet rabbits, you can for example check out rabbit.org. And remember: Adopt, don’t shop!
#bunnies#animals#pets#good post about bunnies#I hope to one day have one but I'm not in a situation where I can atm#this is an excellent PSA about bunny ownership tho#and also kinda pets in general#on average I think people will get pets not understanding the commitment that goes into caring for them#and this includes dogs#dogs are higher maintenance than people think or expect#but they get them cuz hur dur man's best friend right?#I'm not going to derail too much#I just wish people would do their research before getting animals#they aren't exotic accessories#they're real living creatures#they are all wonderful and they all have their own unique needs

okay but legitimately TV Tropes is a FANTASTIC website and I love it so much. It's a great catalogue both of what tropes exist, what they are, and also places where they have been used from shows, movies, theater, videogames, anime, literature, you name it, they probably have a category for it
they categorize their tropes too by themes, like secrecy, or idk depression tropes
but my favorite part is that they also distinguish between a Trope that's good and being used as intended, and a trope that's clearly MEANT to be a good trope, but is poorly written so it comes off as the "poorly written version" of the other trope. Off the top of my head, think like Angst vs Wangst, in which the first case is ya know, character is experiencing emotional distress because of all the trauma that's been happening and it HURTS (so good) vs the second case where instead of coming off as the character deeply suffering, it comes off as whiny and irritating.
but like that's just one example. I love browsing them, discovering new tropes. Sometimes it's good for like idea generation, sometimes I like reading about tropes I usually hate or don't care for, and then think about "how can I subvert this and/or write it in a way that I would like it?"
Other times, I like going on it after I've engaged with a media and seeing what tropes have been assigned to it by the ppl there. It helps me process, analyze and understand the story better and helps me understand my own writing better too
TV tropes is wonderful
TVTropes gets made fun of a lot but it is a little astonishing how consistent that wiki's voice is. It's a great wiki to go to if you want to simulate having one specific autistic fifteen-year-old computer nerd infodump to you about any piece of media that exists. To be clear I am saying this as an overwhelmingly positive thing
#tv tropes#writing source#I cannot recommend TV tropes ENOUGH#seriously it's so fun to just go down rabbit holes there
