Captain Cook Cruises - Harbour Spice Gold Lunch
Captain Cook Cruises – Harbour Spice Gold Lunch
Tumblr media
It’s been a very difficult year of 2020 so far and I cannot help yet I can only throw back to this Gold Lunch Experience on one the most renowned cruise in Sydney – Captain Cook Cruises. Each month they would launch a different theme in their Gold Lunch Series and this time we are lucky enough to try their “Asian Cuisine” menu, which was right up my alley.

Having lived in Sydney, one of the benefits is that you get to travel to different states in just a few hours. After just 3.5 hours drive, there we have, the capital city of Australia, Canberra.
We have picked a hotel at the heart of the city, Mantra MacArthur Hotel. Canberra CBD is relatively small so it only takes roughly 5 mins drive to the CBD, and just 20mins to…

It’s worth a road trip to Castle Hill. This wine bar has more than 90 different wines for diners to pair with their meals. The restaurant is newly renovated and it has a small courtyard area if you are into al fresco dining.
Tumblr media
To go with our wine, the restaurant serves a selection of seafood and meat dishes, from bite size to more substantial sizes. We started our meal with some really fresh Sydney rock oysters served in 3 ways (Natural / Pickled cucumber and apple / Red wine mignonette). The sweetness and sour taste from the dressing brought out extra flavours from the shell fish
matched with Pewsey Vale 1961 Block Riesling, Eden Valley, SA
BBQ Fremantle octopus with Chorizo, sweet corn puree, black garlic. The smoky taste from the octopus was a perfect match with spicy sausages and the corn balanced out the intense flavour with its natural sweetness. The garlic added a nice touch giving that little boost in aroma.
matched with Lunar Apoge Rose, Tavel, France
Wagyu rump cap 5+
You can’t go wrong with some good meat and this piece of 5+ rump was generous in serving size and it just went very nicely with our matching Malbec from Chile. I can’t be happier when I can have wine and steak, and of course a good company.
Cauliflower cheese, chimichurri, pangrattato
It’s almost like cauliflower gratin and it was delicious yet very indulging. The pangrattato (breadcrumb) gave a crunchy top to this dish of baked golden creaminess.
Rosemary polenta chips with truffle mayo
I don’t miss potation chips anymore when I can have polenta chips. It’s super crunchy on the outside and silky smooth on the inside. Besides, nothing beats truffle mayo when it comes to deep fried goodness.
matched with Mayu Reserve Malbec, Elqui Valley, Chile
Chocolate fondant
A good meal has to be concluded with some sweets. This molten cake useed Callebaut 70% dark chocolate, and was topped with a dollop of house made yoghurt ice cream and fresh berries. Nostalgically, the matching Sherry was really delicious and the sweetness was just right. It really reminded me of the time when I was living in London, sipping Sherry by the fireplace.
matched with Valdespino Yellow Label Pedro-X Sherry, Spain 10

Taiwan is truly a food heaven. We spent 7 days just in Taipei and our trip was planned around food – all sorts of food – from street food to night markets to any famous eateries.
My Favourite Street Food
First eat in Taipei, a famous 胡椒餅 (NT$50) just next to our hotel 🤤 Super crunchy and the meat inside was tender and juicy, so gooooood 😍

This is a very well known beef noodles restaurant in Taipei and a number of famous TV shows have featured this shop in the past. Let me put it up front that I was very disappointed with this and it was probably the worst bowl among the whole trip.  We have ordered a mix of tendon and brisket noodle and it came in a big serving. The soup was a bit on the sweet side but lack of body. Both the brisket and tendon were a bit too tough to chew on, while the noodles was on par. Not to mention that it was the most expensive bowl of beef noodles I have ever had in Taipei, complimented with a good 20 mins wait.

Supper time! 🍜 After midnight after some cocktail o’clock. We came to this 24/7 noodle shops for some drunk food and they serve me just right. We had a bowl of mix noodle with some tripe and meat. The noodle can be chosen between thick and thin and we went for the classic thin one. It was chewy and delicious, while the soup base was packed with beef bone flavour and it was not overly sweetened. Every piece of meat / inside has its own texture and they are all marinated for a long time with some flavourful herbs. Compared to all other beef noodles I have ever had, I would definitely prefer for this bowl of honest hot noodles.

First stop at Raohe night market, Michelin Bib Gourmand Chen Dong Lamb Ribs Medical Herbs Soup 🍖 The herbal soup base was a bit too sweet for my liking though 😕 That home made chilli though was delish! 😋
Second stop at Raohe night market, Michelin Bib Gourmand Shi Boss Spicy Stinky Tofu 🌶 This is the first time I ate a soup based / non-fried stinky tofu, which tasted pretty good! If only it was spicier and stinkier, that would’ve been even better 😂
Third stop at Raohe night market, Michelin Guide mentioned Dong Fa Hao 🍜 This hundred year old joint only sells 3 items. We decided to go with baby oyster vermicelli soup which we’ve been looking forward to eat in Taiwan 😋 Unfortunately I find this soup base to be slightly too sweet again, I personally prefer the soup base from Ah Chung Noodle Soup last night 😂
Fourth stop at Raohe night market, not Michelin but the pretty famous Xia Gang Ming Peng stinky tofu joint at Raohe night market 🌶 Thinking the last one was not spicy nor stinky enough, we tried out this joint that is more popular amongst local Taiwanese. We ordered fried this time and it was gooooood 😍 At first we thought they forgot to put the chilli sauce in our tofu, then we realised you actually add your own from the shop 😂 I think both stinky tofu places we tried were good in their own ways, but I decided that I like crispy on the outside and tender on the inside texture of the deep fried version more 🔥

“Black Sugar Frog” is indeed an interesting name for a drink. From my research, they made their name unique so as to avoid other competitors from stealing their fame by copying their names. The black sugar was flavourful but it may taste even better if we didn’t shake it that much.

Known as the best Gua Bao in Taipei. We chose half fat half lean and it’s yummy when it’s complimented with some sweet and savoury crushed peanuts and coriander. 半肥瘦刈包甜甜咸咸的很好吃👌🏻 Four Herbal Soup – a healthy soup with a strong bittersweet Angelica taste. Mala Hot Pot
We have received way too many recommendation for hotpot places in Taipei and we particularly wanted Mala style. After some not so deep considerations, we went to this spacious shop that is almost ‘marinated’ with cumin. The hotpot smell rushed out from the door and you can tell that it’s a herbal kind of healthy soup base.
All ingredients were super fresh and the service was on point. Our cold tofu and duck blood got refilled a few times complimentarily, as well as their refreshing palette cleanser.
However, their menu is quite small and you need to be mindful that there is only 1.5 hours for each table. We were a bit rushed at the end because we weren’t told in advance. Yet, it is a very quality hotpot place and I would still recommend it if you are after somewhere comfortable and painlessly affordable.
p.s. all-you-can-eat white rice

Jiufen
You wouldn’t want to walk pass this place during a hot summer. We ordered the iced one which literally came with sweet ice and the Taiwanese signature chewy mochi bites. Oishi!
Pickled cabbage steamed rice cake is one of the specialty in Jiufen. I loved the chewiness from the thin mochi skin and the pickled savoury and still crunchy shredded radish was delicious. It tasted so much better when compared to the taro one which is just below this photo.
Taro steamed rice cake –  tastes just like rice cake. I was a bit disappointed with the light taste from taro.
Probably my favourite spot in Jiufen. This combo costs an economic NT$90 and it consists of some fish balls, fried tofu stuffed with fish paste, and some potato starch noodles. This balls were as crunchy as I was expecting but rather chewy. The tofu with some spicy sauce was out of this world delicious and the spicy smooth noodles was a great match to complete this light meal for two.
A combination soup of a different types of meat balls. There are some squid balls, shiitake mushroom balls, pork balls, and some bursting meat balls. They all tasted just like any other frozen meat balls that you can find at grocery store but they are still good, just nothing really outstanding.
A must visit place when in Jiufen is this tea house which was believed to be the same house from the movie “Spirited Away” . You may choose between iced and hot oolong tea and there will always be some local delicacies to go with it. p.s. the tea is buffet style and they will keep refilling non-stop

師大第一吃🥢 Marinated goodness is probably one of the most underrated Taiwanese food. You may find all sorts of organs and some tofu products marinated with flavourful sauces, and some pickled cabbage and extra chili sauce is not to be missed.

This impromptu Taipei trip was pretty much based on Google reviews and we found this dumpling shop with high rating so why not? Interesting, they do a kind of black-colour dumpling with scallop meat stuffed inside. As a boring person, I still prefer their traditional pork dumplings and veggies dumplings. Their sour and spicy soup are very good too!

Everything was up on par and I wouldn’t mind coming back again.

Just in case you haven’t noticed already, tofu product can be found at almost every Taiwanese dessert place and this bowl of tofu dessert was amazing! The iced tofu fa was nothing like I was expecting. It was literally served with sweet ice made with rock sugar and the bowl also came with some boiled peanut. OMG One more bowl please!

This place is very famous and there was a long line every day. Despite the rude attitude, they did serve me the best salted tofu drink I have ever had in my life. It was so thick that it was almost like tofu paste, and their fried dough in flat bread was just on point. I had been dreaming about their salted tofu drink since I left.

This honest local eatery definitely has better Lu Rou Fan when compared to the last one which came with a fried egg. It was not as fatty and the flavour of the braised minced meat was long lasting. The shark fin (probably not real) thick soup was surprisingly delicious too.

Shilin Night Market
Came here just for their oyster pancakes, however it’s rather disappointing because their stinky tofu wasn’t really good and the squid soup was not that great.
Big sausage wrapped small sausage is one of the specialty in Taiwanese cuisine. This snack reminds me of my last visit and it was just as good as I can remember. Chewy on the outside, crunchy on the inside when I bite into it. We ordered extra hot but instant regretted it because it was a little too hot that it covered the taste of the sausage and the pickled cabbage.
Wanted to try their pepper cake originally but decided have their sesame plain flat bread instead since it was fresh out of the often. It was super big in size and had a good yeasty nutty aroma because they use sourdough flour.
Sad noodles with a bit of sesame sauce but not as tasty as I wish it should be. Won’t recommend it.
We have also tried a white bitter melon juice with honey. Refreshing with a light sweetness and a well balanced sweet and sour taste. Give it a go if you see it one of the food stalls.

AirAsia Turns 9
For those who are skeptical about in-flight meal, thanks to the decade long bad reputation, I can guarantee you this Malaysian airline, AirAsia, has always been on top of their game when it comes to food. From Malaysian classics, western, vegetarian, to kids meal, they got you covered.
Once we got on board, we found the seats are quite spacious with good leg room. I liked the little coat hook on the side of the seats for you to hang your jackets. Just like any other airlines, some in-flight magazines and booklets are available for you to browse through some of the latest holiday plans and shop for souvenirs. It also comes with their food, snacks and drinks menu.
On the other hand, flight entertainment is not available unless you pay for the add-on tablet, Xcite Inflight Entertainment , which is complimentary for all Premium Flatbed seats. Alternatively, you may download an app called, roKKi, which is only compatible with some flights for you to enjoy Wi-Fi internet connection onboard.

For our trip from Sydney to Taipei, we each have a layover at KLIA2 airport in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. We ordered some meals in advance so we can skip the hassle and have to find cash on the plane to buy food. (p.s. Different flight serves different food served so better check prior)
  Thai Green Curry with Rice
I was a bit skeptical about this pick but it actually turned out really really well. That fragrant from the herbs and rice just rushed out from the sealed container once the meal was brought to me by our professional good looking flight attendants. I love that fluffy jasmine rice with with aromatic green curry that is perfumed with bay leaf. The heat was just right for our airplane palette.

Nasi Lemak
The infamous Malaysian classic that has brought back all my good memories. It was a bit pretty spicy meal but it’s just perfect to my liking. That flavourful marinated meat has a really strong savoury taste, which complimented nicely with the coconut infused rice. Load the rice with some crunchy peanuts and dried fish which comes in a separate pack for extra umami.

Uncle Chin’s Chicken Rice
I have heard good words about Uncle Chin’s food and he didn’t disappoint me. The chicken pieces were thinly sliced and were super tender. The savouriness from the meat went exceptionally well with the “chicken oil” rice, which is a traditional way to prepare this dish. Besides, that chili sauce just made everything tasted even better.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA
Sweet & Sour Chicken Meatballs with Garlic Rice
This is a dish that I used to love and I used to order it all the time whenever I want something comes with lots of sauce. The sweet and sour balance was on point. The little meatballs were tender. Just a great choice especially when you don’t have a big appetite on plane.

Glutinous Rice with Chicken and Dim Sum Combo
The last in-flight meal we tried was very interesting. It a combo of my childhood memory. There are two types of siu mai, a dumpling wrapped in lettuce, and some sticky glutinous rice that’s full of lotus leaf aroma.
OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA
OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA
There are a lot more meal options and snacks for you to purchase on flight at a very affordable price so you don’t need to be worried about food and staying hungry when you are flying with AirAsia.
Layovers
If you only have a few hours layovers, I would recommend you to stay at KLIA2 and explore some of the local food, or maybe buy some Malaysian souvenirs to share with your friends and family.
We tried this Indian restaurant in the food court upstairs and it has probably topped most of the Indian restaurants in Sydney. The long grain saffron biriyani with spicy hot mutton curry that would make you sweat.
Tumblr media
Toast Box – You can’t go wrong with traditional kaya butter toast and two shiny wobbly soft-boiled eggs with thick dark soya sauce. Dip that bad boy in the eggs, then take a sip of the strong and sweet teh si peng or kopi. Indeed, we need a caffeine fix after a long haul.

I have flown with AirAsia multiple times and I can’t stress enough that I have always appreciated their professional service and comfortable seats, not to mention their exciting in-flight meal. Holy Duck is famous for their duck dishes but it’s more than that. The duck shop has just opened a new branch in Castlecrag, Quadrangle Shopping Village, just right next to Bistro Mekong.

This may have been one of the most exciting dinners ever. Master Chef Bryan Zhu’s project called Levitate Instant Restaurant has partnered with The Rice Panty for a reunion dinner at Precinct 75, which is next to Willie The Boatman in St. Peters.
Embracing Chef Byran’s Chinese background, the menu consisted of fusion elements and vegetarian options are well catered.
Kicking start at 6pm, the table is set, the music is on, and the light is dimmed. Two sharing snacks were served while we were waiting for everyone to arrive. The toasted bread came with a small dish of smooth creamy butter, and some seasoned popcorn.
OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

The chef table is right at one end of the big room, every small little action is like a display to diners. What’s more exciting then seeing how your food get constructed in front of your eyes? Not only Byran was a talented friendly chef, but the team at the dinner service was professional, attention to details, and very efficient to make sure we get fed at the right pace.
DOWN AND DIRTY
Vietnamese fried chicken is nothing like the crispy ones in Korean or Western style, but it has a rather thin layer of batter. The bite size tender chicken nuggets were spiced with sriracha mayo, cucumber, and sour pickles. This dish shows how chef strike the perfect balance to excite our palate.
The OCEAN BED
Hands down my favourite dish of the night. It’s not just because of its expensive taste but it did actually taste amazing. I normally dislike any kind of congee but this one used mixed grain crab congee with abalone, king mushroom, ocean crumb, and fingerline. The congee base is not rice but mostly barley with a little of quinoa, and the floss on top elevated the whole dish with that a little bit of sweetness.
CROUCHING BEEF, HIDDEN MANDARIN
Another amazing dish that took us by surprise. It’s not just any kind of beef dish, but the crispy beef was almost jerky-like with some sweetness from the mandarin ginger glaze. Though it’s like jerky, it’s still very tender and the more you chew it, the more flavour would come out. The beef is sitting on top of a bed of miso potato puree and some thinly sliced gai lan threads, topped with crispy deep fried enoki mushroom. It’s so good I wish it never finishes.
PALATE CLEANSER
Some chrysanthemum sorbet and osmanthus jelly to basically make our tongues ready for dessert.
Byran Zhu doesn’t take dessert easily. A magic dry ice show was pulled off at each table before two different desserts were served for us in no time.
p.s the dry ice is poured over on some lemon tea, giving us another sensation of enjoyment
THE END OF YUMCHA
First dessert was a lighter sweet dish. A spoonful of silky soy milk and ginger ice cream that melted in my mouth instant. The diary taste was so similar to what I had in childhood, what’s more? It was complimented beautifully with kinako crumble (soy bean ), lemongrass sago, and mango mochi. It’s it just everything I wanted when I think of dessert? I particularly liked the kinako crumble rather than the overly used soy bean powder in lots of other desserts out there.
AUTUMN FLOOR
The next dessert is a bit heavier because it’s whipped chestnut mascarpone with toasted chestnut soil and brown butter tuille. First off, the toasted chestnut taste was powerful and I am all for it! It’s smooth and sweet but not the artificial sweet taste from chestnut products. All those crumbs and crisps around it gave the dish a bit of bites that make you can’t stop eating.
PETIT FOURS
Sometimes people may skip petit fours because they are either too full but mostly because petit fours can be quite boring. At our dinner, you definitely don’t want to miss it because they are just as exciting as the courses (coconut bliss, rocky road, lemon tea mashmellow, osmanthus jelly) .

Conclusion
For a decent price, it’s a true unique experience to try the masterpieces from Master Chef. Each dish is nostalgic especially the ocean congee that was full of ocean flavour. The open space at the venue in Precinct 75 was perfect for the event because it was absolutely peaceful and quiet at night, while the dining area was buzzing with banters and music from the live band. The 2.5 hours dining experience left us joy and a very satisfying stomach. I hope to come back again for another bespoke menu, or the regular menu at The Rice Pantry!

Ho Ho Jiak! Mai Jiak Cao!
Ho Ho Jiak! Mai Jiak Cao!
There is a huge Malaysian population in Sydney but it’s not the easiest thing to find good Malaysian food. Among a handful of good restaurants in town, Ho Jiak has been my all-time favourite. The owner from Penang spent his childhood watching and learning cooking from her Grandmother (Amah). “Good things are meant to be shared” is his idea to share Nyonya “legacy” to diners. Loh Bak 卤肉 15

España Tapas Paella Done Right @ Encasa
España Tapas Paella Done Right @ Encasa
Encasa has a few branches around town. Being around the Lane Cove neighbourhood for a long time, I used to go to that branch for lunch and dinner. Whilst the one on George Street embraces the same menu, it’s a lot more buzzing being situated at the heart of CBD.
