art can be about taboo subjects. art can deal with something socially unacceptable. art can disturb and disgust. art doesn’t have to be for everybody.

tag your warnings so that people who might be triggered by your art don’t accidentally get exposed to it and you’re all good.

and if people try to shame you for the art you create because it’s “problematic” then you can tell them to fuck off and mind their own business. they read the warnings. they choose to read and engage with your art on their own free will. that’s not your problem.

dark fics and macabre art do not—have never, and never will—reflect artists’ in-real-life moralities.

harassing artists, real people, over fictional things will never make you “morally superior”. it only makes you a bully.

Key. Amazing deity of Sparchess art. You know very well that I am about to get eaten alive for this.

So, if you're new around here, I am very VERY VERY adamant in my "aro Sparrow, ace/aroace Duchess" headcanons. They have THE most friends with benefits/qpr energy I have EVER seen, and all the evidence in the world cannot convince me they're allo.

That said! I also have a hard time picturing them with anyone ELSE for similar reasons! Duchess has some options in the form of Lizzie and Faybelle (and possibly Darling or Raven), and I think Sparrow's probably jokingly flirted with and/or kissed half the school, but there's a reason they keep coming back to each other.

I've gone on record before saying that Sparchess gives off the same vibes as the Thenardiers from Les Mis: soulmates who have zero affection for each other. They fit together so amazingly well. They are super duper compatible. They've got a similar level of moral ambiguity that alienates them from their peers but helps them function well together, they both have grating personalities that most people can't take but that they don't mind in each other, and Duchess' off-the-wall levels of drive pairs very entertainingly with Sparrow's total lack of motivation to do anything ever.

Critically, they still don't like each other very much. They'd sell each other out---correction, HAVE sold each other out for the pettiest of small things. They'll still come crawling back to each other afterwards, but they don't exactly have each other's backs. The story has also proven pretty well that they enable each other. They both start to grow into healthier people only AFTER they mostly cut ties and stop hanging out. When they do hang out again, they go right back into the old space of being dicks to each other and everyone else.

But you know what? I don't really care about them getting healthier. Sometimes the best healthiest option is also the most boring one! I like them in a weird, morally gray ambiguous space. I think it's great that they both take a break from being friends so that they can get rid of the worst behaviors, the ones that derail the story and sabotage the themes, but I also think it's great that their continued friendship ensures they'll never become pleasant people! It would be really boring if everyone was pleasant, and it's always valuable to have several people in a group that you can trust to call out the bullshit and are willing to be assholes when the situation calls for it.

No offense to the super creative Sparchess shippers in the room (cough cough Key cough cough), but I do think they get less interesting when you make them explicitly romantic. I feel like it makes their bond mean less. The fact that they don't actually get anything out of this relationship other than "a person I can be myself around," is both fantastic insight into their characters and a very compelling message. I also can't ever see Duchess feeling rebellious enough to actually pursue that. If Duchess is in a good enough place to pursue anyone other than a prince, she's also in a good enough place to seek out someone she likes a whole lot more.

Choosing to ship them does do a lot for the story, but I don't think there's anything it does that their canon weird-ass platonic thing doesn't do. There's a lot to be said for them as a romantic couple, but I think there's more to be said with a more ambiguous dynamic. That's all pretty subjective though, and I can't deny that if you ARE shipping either of them, Sparchess is probably the best option. For that reason, I can't put them in S-tier, but I'd feel pretty stupid for putting them any lower than A:

Her relationship with Lizzie gonna faltered heavily. She moved out to be roommates with Faybelle (base on the timeline Bunny isnt here yet) and thus begin their friendship to BFFA. She'd be closer to Sparrow at this point and start hanging out at his treehouse to scheme for thronework. Raven, relieving that she's no longer got forced into the Evil Queen role would be horrid to find out Duchess has take on her role and would try to persuade her into writing her own destiny instead.

no srs you should always go for it!! I have 4 more drafts in my doc and havent finished none. But my fics are still up. Eventually people will click on it if they are interested or just curious.
