He walks us through his education background of earning multiple degrees while already knowing exactly what he was passionate about. Pete suggests artists who know they want to get into the entertainment industry should focus on building skills instead of degrees. Welcome to The Keys to the Office Podcast, where we help Black and Latinx students chart career paths and prepare for success through guest interviews and job search tips from HR professionals and successful entrepreneurs.
Today's focus is: The Keys to the Entertainment Industry
From childhood dreams, to balancing an education and career, finding mentorship and forming genuine relationships, join us as we talk with special guest, Amor Lauren! Whether you want to pursue the entertainment industry or invest in your craft, Amor Lauren shares the keys to navigating through the highs and lows of setting yourself up for success. Grab your notepad and a pen, you don’t want to miss these gems!
SHOW NOTES
Mentorship
- You should always have someone who you can consult with, within the same industry as yourself, or someone who is credible and experienced within your career field to decrease the amount of mistakes that you could potentially make.
- A mentor will save you time and money for the knowledge obtained.
- Don’t be afraid to invest in mentorship to help further your career.
Public Appearance
- Invest in your appearance! Take the time to consult with someone to make sure that you’re well-groomed for exclusive public appearances.
Invest in a Home Studio
- Home essentials include: a computer, speakers, a mic, kaotica eyeball, interface, earphones, and a hard drive.
- Building a home studio allows you to record at any point in time.
Start Where You Are
- If you cannot afford to hire someone for a service, at the bare minimum learn to figure it out.
- Exhaust your resources! Research on online platforms like YouTube.
- Everything is figureoutable. There is nothing that you cannot figure out how to do.
- If you don’t have a computer, join a library and use the computer for free!
- It all depends on YOU, your hunger, and your time management.
Learn How to Educate Yourself
- Education comes in many forms, and sometimes the best education is from being in the field.
- Grow your network and get around people who are already in your industry.
The Importance of Relationships
- Build genuine relationships on social platforms! You never know who someone could be connected to.
The Higher Up, The More Cut Throat
- You have to be spiritually grounded and have a strong circle in order to survive the entertainment industry.
- Many people operate out of fear and control within the industry.
- Make sure to read your contracts!
- Take time to read the backstory behind Elvis Presley, Jackie Wilson & Sam Cooke.
- Take your time when reading your contracts. If you don’t understand the verbiage within the contract, hire someone to review it for you.
- Don’t rush to sign it!
- If a contract is going back and forth between lawyers, someone is trying to take more than they need. Look for red flags!
- Quincy Jones & Frank Sinatra never had a contract.
The Preparation Process
- Prepare for what you want in your career field.
- Prepare spiritually, emotionally and financially!
The Prep Pack (Launching in October 2022)
- An entertainer’s step by step guide to prepare for an opportunity at a moment’s notice.
- Leave a lasting impression in networking environments.
Major Keys
- There’s nothing that you can’t do.
- Your dreams have to be so big to the point where it scares you.
- Don’t let your fears, doubts and your age hinder your potential!
- You can’t get anywhere by yourself. Everybody needs somebody. If you want to get there, you have to get there with a team.
- When you interact with people, connect with them! You have no idea what they do outside of the space that you met them in.
- Ask a person with great wealth, “is there anything that I can do for you?”
- Stay Ready & Assist!
The Tribe
- Casey Gram @caseygraham_24
- Lyrik London @lyriklondon
- Beliria @beliria
The Real Keys to the Office
- Tap in! Be aware of who you surround yourself with.
- Stay prayed up!
- Be kind and not manipulative.
- GIVE! Your purpose is to find out what you love and give it to someone else.
- Stay educated! You should always be learning something new.
- Take action! Be willing to put in the work yourself.
- When you develop your own office, it should be something that you love to do.
