The whole place keeps shuddering and shaking, walls cracking only suddenly rent by invisible claws, causing moldings to splinter, water pipes to rupture, electrical wires to spit and short out. Worse, the black ash of below, spreads like printer's ink over everything, transforming each corner, closest, and corridor into that awful dark.

You: Your books?!?!
Me: Yes, my books!
You: You wrote books?!?
Me: Yes.
You: I didn't know you wrote books!
Me: Yes, and now...
You: What is your books about?
Me: \m/ is about a fictional rock band (think 'Almost Famous' meets 'Daisy Jones and the Six.') 'Black Clouds & Silver Linings' is a book of short stories/writings. And 'The Ballad of Candybomb & Grief' is a book that dives into addiction, depression, and grief.
You: And where can I get your books?
Me: They are free for a few days on Amazon.

Now, as many writers will tell you, some stories are born premature; you might have the skeleton of a decent idea and perhaps even a main character in mind, but all the rest - supporting characters, plot points, a beginning, middle, and end - is missing. Of course, many other stories are birthed plump and healthy; in these cases, all of the major plot points are in place, the complete roster of characters are present and ring true in your heart, and all that's left to do is to connect the dots and create a seamless and entertaining narrative. Still other tales, as rare as precious jewels, are born fully formed, is if merely buried in a mound of sand that needs only to be brushed away in order to discover the entirety of the story - crackling with life and energy and wonder - underneath.

She takes my arm again, give it a squeeze, and rests her head on my shoulder. Our laughter echoes across the rolling, snow-covered hills. It's a good sound.

Call me naïve, but I believe some things just aren't meant to be understood. So much of life - and death - is a mystery.
