Day 19: Reverse Siege

People are wandering the streets with strange fuzzy growths on them, they look awful and smell even worse. They ignore her for the most part but one has planted themself in her yard and Felil can't get past them to the door. Mostly they just sit there, orifices bleeding (especially their mouth), looking miserable.

She would feel worse for them if they didn't snarl and snap at her every time she tried to slip past to go inside. It's been two days, her sister who lives a few hundred miles away looks like a better option the longer Felil spends anxiously pacing the sidewalk across the street.

She's going to try a few more times, if she can't get in soon she's just going to cut her losses and start walking.

God I love Raptors In The Rainforest, I was looking it up for something and happened across this post which again made me wonder why like nobody seems to have read it or be talking about it it's so incredible

(there's been another fic added since this post to officially end the series if anyone's wondering!)

fic rec! This is actually a series, with the whole thing coming in at 292K.

Summary: How intelligent are velociraptors? Very, very intelligent, as Owen Grady discovers in the aftermath of the Jurassic World disaster.  But his quest to prove their intelligence and save his raptors will take him further than he ever expected, and the world will never be the same again.

Comments: I went searching for a fic to loose myself in, and lost myself for probably a week in this series. I will probably reread this all in a few years, it’s amazing on so many levels.

Let’s be honest, in the JW movies what we really like is the cool moments between Owen and the raptors. This series makes the movies look dumb - because this takes all those cool moments and ramps them up. We start with riding a bike alongside raptors, move to a raptor cavalry, and finish with dino detectives. It’s GLORIOUS.

This series starts out with the realization that not only are raptors intelligent, they’re sapient, and in the aftermath of the JW movie Blue decides that she’s never going to allow her people to be put into cages again. This story is an epic about the realization that raptors should be treated equal to humans and the struggle to get there. It involves lots of action adventures, kidnapping, arson, and…what I can only describe as romantic-only monster poly relationships. Like, raptors socially bond with humans for life (romantic only or QPR, take your pick) but they each totally also have relations on the side with others of their species. Blue asking Owen for his opinion on an egg-father is amazing.

I love how detailed and well-thought out the raptor culture is and how there’s a lot of layers to it. They hang off of Alan Grant’s every word, eager to learn about their old society, even while committing to building a different world where they live among humans. There’s different body languages, different body language capabilities, different point of views, even subtle differences in the cadences of their language.

Plus, again, this is just a cool story. I want to see it animated. Illustrated.

I agree, you make a fine point for the most part

But.

When the first trilogy was made, there was an effort to design the dinosaurs realistically given the information they had at the time which now is outdated by decades and I have no qualms with this.

My personal problem is that JW didn't even pretend to do that at any point, in Dominion they even showed what they claimed to be nearly pure clone dinosaurs and they still had all the same problems just with some feathers this time and don't even get me started on the giganotosaurus, it looks like a giant vacuum sealed acrocanthosaurus >:|

My rant abt Jurassic park/world hate for inaccurate dinosaurs:

Tl;dr: Yes, the dinosaurs are inaccurate. That’s the entire point, they’re genetically spliced and it’s repeatedly brought up and mentioned, and examples of it are explicitly shown. It’s not a fault on the show or book, it’s literally the plot.

Did you even watch the movie or read the book

To be fair, the first movies didn’t make it too painfully obvious, but the books did a better job showing it, and Jurassic world 1 literally spat it in your face with lines like “that thing out there, that’s no dinosaur”, and the entire conversation about all the genetic splicing they did with the Indominus rex that basically gave it superpowers

Of course these dinosaurs aren’t accurate, they were never meant to be. They’re theme-park monsters. They’re spliced with stuff like frogs and lizards etc. it’s the entire story. As dr Henry wu said (from memory) “if these animals were pure many of them would look quite different, but you didn’t ask for reality, you asked for more teeth”. They’re literally canonically making the dinosaurs moreso to represent what people want to see, and expect, rather than what was true.

In the first book, Dr Henry wu and John Hammond even had an argument about this, with the sauropods. The sauropods were alert, and aware, and not slow moving and dull, like real animals, and Henry Wu was trying to tell John Hammond to change them to be more slow and dim to suit people’s expectations better. And from the film, the dinos are literally ripping abilities like sex change from the genes they’re spliced with.

NOTHING hints that these are remotely meant to represent actual dinosaurs, except for the fact they’re named them. That’s like the entire sub-plot.

And, in the newest film, where they were actually, y’know, making dinos again, with more advanced tech where they were actually trying to make real dinos for science, they made more realistic dinos! Boom!

Just annoys me when ppl are complaining about inaccuracy in the dinos: you buffoon, that’s the whole point. Buuuuuut it is a good convo starter with people who don’t know dinosaurs. “Hey did u know the raptors in Jurassic park have broken wrists?” “What.”

And I mean, ignoring the whole fact of it being part of the story, the first movie wasn’t made when accurate designs were known properly. They can’t just suddenly massively redesign the centrepieces of the show for no reason. They had a chance to change it for accuracy in JW1 cause they could say they made all new dinos, but it equally makes sense that they’re still making dinos similarly to the first park. Especially considering the amount of dinos they appear to have re-captured and used, like Rexy

Plus is it the end of the world to watch our fun lil nostalgic dinosaurs look cool and be badass, whether it’s accurate or not?

Lady Mi Amore Cadenza

Sorry it took so long, it will definitely happen again, now without further adieu, here's au Cadence! Lore under the cut :>

Cadence was born a pegasus to presumably pegasi parents, she has no memory of her birth parents and was found on the outskirts of a northern town as a toddler. She was wrapped in a cloak far too big for a foal, she was well fed but cold, confused, and alone. An elderly couple from the town adopted and raised her.

Despite lacking a horn Cadence showed incredible proficiency in love magics as she aged, wherever she went love and light followed. She attained alicorn status at a very young age, beloved by her town already, after saving it from a malicious sorcerer the outpouring of love from the town filled her with magic and in a sharp burst of lights and colors Cadence transformed.

In the modern era the only known alicorns were goddesses, so the townsfolk believed they had just witnessed a divine birth, word was sent to Canterlot, and Celestia herself came to meet the newly minted alicorn. The town held a festival to welcome the sun to their home. Celestia spoke with Cadence, the old goddess had privately grown lonely in the absence of her sister, even with the many many friends she's made over the centuries, so she extended an offer to young Cadence. 'Come with me to Canterlot, be my niece and I will be your mentor.' it was worded like a command, but Cadence understood the subtle plea for company. She didn't feel like a goddess, but maybe the sun would show her what it felt like, and maybe the sun needed someone to love.

Cadence remained in the company of Celestia for two decades learning the life of royalty and divinity, she never felt any more like a god than when she started, but she was happy.

Her true ascension would come when she defeated Sombra and returned the crystal heart to the crystal empire. Celestia dubbed Cadence the crystal princess, and moved her into the crystal palace. The crystal ponies were at first concerned about this ruler they hadn't chose, but Cadence proved unfavorable to leadership, she held elections for the crystal ponies to choose a council, then left the council to run itself, in the meantime dedicating herself to the restoration of the empire and the healing of it's citizens.

In this au she and Shining Armor would not meet until he was already captain of the guard, after she moved to the crystal empire they remained pen pals, sending increasingly romantic letters until finally they married a few years later. Cadence had met Twilight and they got along very well, maintaining their own stream of letters and becoming good friends, as ponies who loved Shining Armor, and as current and past proteges of the sun.

The wedding was chaos, but that's a story for another day >:)
