When you think about it, Katara could have just have easily been the trophy wife of Fire Lord Zuko like she was a trophy wife to Aang. 

But she never would have been treated that way by Zuko. He saw her as someone deserving of his respect and love. He treated her like an equal, like she had a voice that was worth listening to. He let her scream and rage and hate him because he believed her feelings were valid. 

He never told her she was wrong. He never tried to force his own ideologies on her. He never tried to explain things away or rationalize with her. He never tried to stop her from being angry or bitter or powerful. 

Zuko wanted to be there for her. He understood that she could protect herself, but he wanted to protect her. And he understood that she was her own person with her own thoughts, and he wanted that individuality to shine and be expressed however she saw fit. But he knew that she didn’t need him. 

Zuko never would have diminished Katara to a housewife/healer to be left behind when he went away on Fire Lord business. He would have brought her along… and honestly, he probably would have told a lot of the other world leaders to “Talk to my wife.” 

I will always be Zutara trash and the reasons above are just a small glimpse as to why.

CUTE SHIZAYA PROPOSALS

1. shizuo blurts it out loud without thinking. izaya’s doing something cute. it’s not something normal people would think is cute; it’s the kind of cute that you think when you’re madly in love with that person. he’s watching izaya chop carrots, sees the sun highlighting izaya’s angular face (and unbeknownst to him, izaya is cursing that sunlight because it means shizuo hasn’t fixed the blinds yet.) he’s cutting the carrots and they’re all even and the rhythm of blade to board is even. and shizuo suddenly says ‘let’s get married’ in a quiet but serious tone. izaya’s blade stills and he looks over and responds in the exact same nonchalant tone: all right.

2. shizuo tried to be romantic. he tried to lay out flower petals. but he slipped on them so he vacuumed them up. (and broke the vacuum.) he tried to pour champagne. but he broke the two good champagne glasses they had. he threw out the pieces. (and made a note to buy more so izaya wouldn’t get mad.) he tried to put on music. but the machine wouldn’t work. he also doesn’t know what kind of music izaya likes. (and he stepped on some cd’s by accident.) so shizuo grew frustrated. he was on the couch, holding his head, fingers in his hair, growling—actually growling—when izaya came home. shizuo stood up and walked over, grabbed izaya by the shirt and izaya wonders but i wasn’t home all day… how did i anger him? and shizuo barks out “just fuckin’ marry me!” izaya stares. izaya blinks. izaya gives a soft smile, a bit lopsided because orihara izaya never smiles a hundred percent, he smiles 90% and smirks 10%. “okay.”

3. shizuo wakes up one day to two rings on the pillow where izaya’s head usually lays and a neatly folded note. he hears the sound of breakfast, he smells the aroma of whatever izaya’s making. shizuo doesn’t like to read early in the morning, especially not izaya’s handwriting. it’s small and scrawly and shizuo is not patient in the morning. but he does so anyway because of the two rings, the two silver rings izaya dons. he reads the note and suddenly he’s awake and he’s alert and he goes back out. he grabs izaya’s hand, ignoring that he was still cooking, and slides the ring that usually rested on his index finger, on his ring finger. and izaya is quick to notice shizuo’s got the other silver ring on his own ring finger too. shizuo smiles. shizuo’s smile is soft and gentle, rough around the edges but genuine true, just like shizuo himself. izaya’s smile is a bit more devious, but still charming, just like izaya himself. “yes.”

4. izaya is not used to shizuo keeping secrets. it is izaya that keeps secret. shizuo is the open book in their relationship. shizuo is the one that expresses how he feels about some raise in tax through his eating: angry stabbing and broken plates. izaya knows shizuo is being sneaky. izaya sees less of shizuo. izaya hears less of shizuo. izaya has less of shizuo. izaya knows shizuo isn’t unfaithful—shizuo is more faithful and loyal than a dog—so maybe shizuo is taking flute lessons or something. who knows. not izaya. but izaya wants to know. so izaya waits for him one night, doesn’t work so he doesn’t miss shizuo coming home. izaya waits until shizuo comes home and asks him directly. “shizu-chan, don’t keep secrets from me.” shizuo stares at him and gives a quiet, gentle, sweet, soft laugh. he takes out a box, small and velvet, and gives it to izaya after he opens it and it’s a ring, simple but beautiful, and izaya knows that shizuo bought it and that makes it priceless. “i won’t.”

5. they’re eating dinner and shizuo has finished telling izaya about how he took care of kasuka’s cat and how they’re never going to get a cat. “what else are we not going to get?” izaya asks. “we’re never going to get a maid. we don’t need one. and we’re never going to get a hamster. those damn things are annoyin’. but we are going to get a milk delivery man. in case we move somewhere where gettin’ milk’s going to be hard.” izaya scoffs quietly. “shizu-chan, you sound like you’re talking about a forever with me.” and they’re both quiet. so quiet. incredibly quiet. quiet for so, so long until they both look up at the same time. “let’s get married.”
