This was the period of good old days, there was a face

Wasn’t a perfect beauty but not an ordinary one either

*Husne taam means – perfect beauty

It’s not that when she walked, the path shone with millions of stars like in a galaxy but Her company would certainly make the journey beautiful

*Kehakasha is referred to a galaxy of stars

This couplet reflects her love for life …Be it any season, her elegance, style would reflect the flavor of the prevailing environment. I.e

She was like shade in summers and Sunlight in winters.

*Muddaton means prolonged duration and rishta-e-wafa loyalty in relationship

Here the poet seems to convey that his lover had her own mind that she was so assertive about through her actions. Both were on the same page when it came to respecting each other’s space. She never stayed away from him for a very long time but wouldn’t be with him day and night either. Repeat couplet. She Never demanded commitment but was possessive enough not to give general permission also…

*izne aam means general permission

Her attire was never too gaudy or pompous to attract the complaint of simplicity

But wasn’t so informal either so as to incur mirror’s offence. Faraz sahib very subtly talks about the woman’s sensuality that manifests in the way she carries herself and not by the ostentatious decorations or attire to grab attention…

Itkhtilaat is an intermingling of women with unrelated men, a patriarchal expression, prohibited in various societies that promote gender segregation. But as mentioned before, the woman in Faraz Sahab’s Nazm is an unchained free soul and no religious or social norm can crush her entity. She wasn’t the one who would suppress desires by being reluctant in friendships and mild flirtations but at the same time not so yielding either that’ll displease the grace of act itself REPEAT

Her love wasn’t so binding that makes life suffocating

But wasn’t so rigid that sours relationship

Khafi is an Arabic word which means not easy to understand or cryptic in nature and sukoot is silence. Kishte zaafran is a farm in which saffron is cultivated but here the term is used to denote laughter and lively discussions. And Ban means forest.

As Faraz Sahab elaborates upon the nature of his lover, he reveals There were times when the conservations she indulged in were difficult to perceive but then there were moments when her silence was more communicative. At one instance she would break into laughter & lively discussions and at the other slide into the forest of solemnity

I have heard there’s life or tenure of the matters of the heart and also of life enhancing romantic dates and heart wrenching separations. This particular couplet is a harbinger of approaching sadness in this seemingly perfect relationship

So one day we clashed on loyalty/commitment I call love Immortal/Eternal n she fumed from my stubbornness

*Aseer means prisoner and kafas -cage

I was the prisoner of love and she called it a cage

For her, lifelong commitment was worst form of lust

I am not a tree or a stone which is always powerless or handcuffed, unable to move and rooted to the ground

Neither am I cattle bound by ropes tied around to my neck to stay put

(*Girl) I'm not whatever u think of me and That I hate commitment is nothing new to you

Neither I was her honour nor was she- my pride

In the absence of commitment how can there be the pain of defeat?

*Ehed means commitment & gam-e-shikastagi is pain of defeat

It’s been time when they both parted ways but more than the eulogy to the demise of a relationship, the poem seems more of a closure for the poet for though his creation is centered on his beloved, the soreness of separation is palpable in tone of this nazm
