thinking about the serial killer regulus au again so here’s some thoughts

— regulus tracks down all of james’ exes, removes their hearts, and gifts them to james

— james buys regulus pretty new knives and other tools when all the blood causes his old ones to rust

— they technically rarely get to have sex alone because ghost barty and ghost evan are constantly watching

— regulus always does the killing, but james is willing to help with restraining/incapacitating victims

— somehow, no one ever finds out what regulus does (other than james). he’ll go from brutal murder to a lunch date with his brother like it’s nothing

— true crime podcasts start talking about regulus’ “unsolved” murders, and he and james will sit and listen to them, laughing at all the things they get wrong

Pansy freezes and Harry’s stomach drops as they turn to face the source of the command. Up to this point, they’ve managed to avoid any run-ins with any heroes or police officers, and Harry had desperately wanted to keep it that way. He doesn’t want to find out the level of cruelty they are willing to inflict now that he is not one of them.

There’s a team of six running down the street, four of them heading towards the wreckage while the other two come straight for Harry and Pansy. Pansy takes off running, and Harry knows he should follow her—knows it’s his best shot at getting out of here unscathed—but his body is moving in the other direction before he can stop to think about what he’s doing.

Within seconds, he’s back in front of the little boy, shielding him from these “heroes” with his own body. He survived them once. He can survive them again.

Dozens of miles and too many mistakes away from home, Sirius finds himself face-to-face with the only thing he ever did right in this lifetime, and realises that even his best efforts were not enough. He is still a lost thing sitting somewhere he doesn’t belong. His baby brother—always his baby brother, no matter how old he gets—was not supposed to follow in his footsteps.

“Regulus,” he whispers, so softly he’s not quite sure the word passed his lips. His hand stills where it had been running through Remus’ hair as he sleeps with his head in Sirius’ lap, and he thinks his heart might still with it.

“They told me you were missing. That the Su—that James kidnapped you,” Regulus states. Clearly at least some of that military training has paid off, because his tone betrays nothing of what he’s feeling. Sirius doesn’t know whether he should be begging for forgiveness or mercy. “They lied to me.”

The dust settles. No one comes to save them.

The little boy is already losing his voice, his screams coming out hoarse and choked as he slams his little fists against Harry’s chest. There’s nothing Harry can do to ease him—he can’t bring the boy’s father back, and he can’t say anything to make that easier to bear—so he stays crouched to the ground, holding the boy like it’s all he knows how to do.

No one held him the last time he saw his parents. Not that he needed it, of course. He’d already endured fourteen years of their cruelty. To be rescued from them that night was the greatest mercy he had ever been shown, and he knows he owes Riddle his life for that. And yet, he would be lying if he said he didn’t sometimes wish for the chance to redo it all, to escape the violence with more humanity than he had been able to hold onto these past two years.

Still, there is some awful, guilty part of him that wishes he was back with his parents. It makes no sense after everything they did to hurt him, and everything Riddle has done to show him compassion in the aftermath, but the feeling is buried deep in his chest. It has taken root. Perhaps the hardest part of having a father is loving him, even from beneath his raised fist.
