Just read Zatanna (2025) and it's SUCH a good example of how good comics can be when they're good. Issue #5 is especially a good example of storytelling tricks that couldn't be done in other forms-- Zatanna literally steals her spell from another character's dialog bubbles!

I also appreciated that Campbell put some focus on Zatanna's mother and not just her father for once.

Also, the whole thing just works together thematically very cohesively, in addition to being really fucking gorgeous.

I will ALWAYS think about how zatanna got the habit of talking in her sleep from her mother…

i like to imagine a 5 month old zatanna curled in sindella’s arms while sindella whispers about the love she has for her daughter in her dreams, in her native language. maybe that’s why, despite zatanna only knowing of sindella as a ghost, despite zatanna briefly losing all of the memories she HAD of her mother, she never doubted for a second of just how much sindella loved her. It was just one of the firsts things she learned <3

Your brief opinion on JLD (2017)’s adaption of Zatanna

(not including 2020’s cause we don’t talk about that nightmare fuel 🥲)

JLD 2017 run is really good imo, I think it’s better than 2011 run because Zatanna and Zatanna were the primary focus of the team. It allowed their friendship to develop more, while giving the both of them the spotlight. I think the arcs were really good and the art was very beautiful. I do feel that Zatanna is slightly mischaracterized in it, because it mostly drew in her character in the New 52 version, but was a noticeable improvement. She was less mean, and combative.

And while the lineup did have criticism for not having many magic users, I did enjoy that Manbat, Swamp Thing, and Detective Chimp were there as the monsters of the team. I thought that was a fun take on a JLD team. I think if the team does return it should once again be lead by Zatanna and Diana, and feature a mix of monstrous and magical members. I think Clayface would make a really fun addition based off his dynamic with Zee from her most recent solo.

last night i finished reading zatanna zatara (2025) and honestly it's the best arc i've read so far. the story is really good, it does have magic, occult, mystery, horror, it has characters that have interacted with her in the past. the art is really good. i feel like jamal campbell and jeff lemire actually did their homework. it made me think they read all the issues they found about her and decided to do something better, and it shows. 10/10

i'm also so so glad that there was no romance at all. i was afraid they'd ruin it with something like it, but nope. zatanna was strong, smart from the beginning.

next person who writes for her, i hope they base it on this arc, and actually make an effort like these guys, because then it will flop.

Yes! We saw her speak seemingly fluent Spanish in her solo run. And she knows ASL as well. It can be implied she is fluent in runes and several other mystic languages? But that would be reading between the lines
