The question I get asked:
"Is it a lot of fun making audio drama? Or is it really tedious?"

It's been a second since I did any proper show promotion, so
If you want to see a podcast woman have the worst time of her life, ride on elevators that aren't quite right spatially, get followed, and get an odd if well paying job, Before The Tone might be the podcast for you

Do You Copy?
Horror with a found footage element as an as-of-s1-unnamed archivist (or some other kind of professional) reviews recordings from several people trapped in an evacuated National Park. There is a part of the park that is alive and it's coming closer. S2 shifts to focus on the group that our mysterious reviewer is a part of.
There is so much casual genderqueerness throughout the podcast in a lot of the characters, and it's delightful!
The Strange Case Of Starship Iris
Found family in space! With a global (inter-planetary?) conflict on. Starship Iris is funny and sincere and really good. My favorite character is Brian Jeeter who is a trans, Jewish, liberal arts guy with gang ties. In other words, the perfect man.
Hello From The Hallowoods
Genderqueerness out the wazoo in this post-apocalyptic comforting horror story told through broadcasts in dream. They've got a genderfluid weather witch, a nonbinary frankenstein's monster (Diggory my beloved), a trans woman who can walk through dreams, a moth-gendered person who befriends an automobile, and much more.
Be Not Afraid
I have to boost the gendernonconformity in Be Not Afraid because it really delights me. It's a blasphemous biblical comedy podcast, and the various angels wear meat suits to speak (except for Ben who is voiced by strange horn sounds), and those meat suits are of various genders! The main character, Enoch is a man wearing a female meat suit and therefore having a feminine voice. And I love that.
Before The Tone
My show! A scifi horror story told through voicemails from a woman to her sister as she begins to work at an increasingly suspicious company. One of the recurring characters is Danny, who is nonbinary, and I love them so much. I myself am bigender though there aren't any explicitly bigender characters in season 1.
Happy TDoV from your local lil liminal gas station attendant.
rec me your fave podcasts/audio fictions with trans/nonbinary/gnc/genderqueer in some way characters!

I just finished listening to "Before the Tone", and I loved the "Crane Wives" drop in the last episode.
What do you think of their latest album? I loved "Bitter Medicine"
Sorry for the long delay in replying; I didn't want to answer until I looked up the song and then it got lost in the shuffle! I've only heard a handful of Crane Wives songs, though I enjoy the ones I know! I feel like Danny's musical preferences are a little slower than my own as a general rule, but I haven't had them listen to any music I don't personally like!
Bitter Medicine is a really beautiful song. Who knows, maybe Danny will end up listening to it at some point...
#answering machine#thank you for the ask and the song rec!#I realized this was stuck in my drafts for ... a while

One thing for the audio drama creators out there:
Remember that your characters exist in space. If you want them to feel human (if they are human), remember that they have *bodies*, not just voices. Bodies that move, sit, are probably in clothes (maybe), and generally make all sorts of noise beyond what's coming out of their mouth.
If you want them to feel alive, make sure to present them doing things and moving around in each scene. You'll be amazed at how far that goes in connecting them to your audience (and in making your show immersive).
(Saying this as someone who ends up doing just as much sound design for a scene that's a conversation as one with robots crashing into each other.)
