Adventures in Sourdough
Like many people in the midst of this social distancing, I鈥檝e decided to try my hand at making sourdough bread. A few weeks ago I began making my starter, feeding it every day and watching it grow. Since then, I鈥檝e tried making a few loaves - some more successful than others! The last one I made was the best yet, but there is definitely still some room for improvement. I think next I will try scoring the bread a little bit deeper, and using less steam for a slightly harder crust.

On the Spice Market
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This year, we decided that our Rhinebeck projects would be matching shawls made out of gradient sets that we got at Rhinebeck last year. Didn鈥檛 they turn out great? Also, ten points to all of us for actually having them done in time (minus some blocking). Another ten points to Kylie for somehow also knitting a Rhinebeck sweater - I don鈥檛 know how she does so much!
My project is here on Ravelry. I made mine out of an Angora Online gradient kit, and two colourways of Sweet Georgia Tough Love Sock (Auburn and Walnut).

More Rhinebeck! Thanks to Kylie for the photos.
1) Showing off our fancy friendship shawls (On the Spice Market)
2) I finally got to do chopstick knitting! I didn鈥檛 win, but it was super fun and I鈥檝e always wanted to do it but never have before.
3) Heather lives for these cider donuts. Those and the frisbee dogs!

CSI Socks
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Kylie got me this yarn from Austria when she was there last year, and I love the colours! You definitely won鈥檛 lose these socks in a crowd. I haven鈥檛 been able to knit nearly as much this summer as a normally do, due to the huge number of things I鈥檝e been trying to do in a short period of time (read: study for and write the MCAT, write and defend my Master鈥檚 thesis, and sell several of my dad鈥檚 properties, among other things). Happily, these are winding down, and I finally have some time to finish up projects that have been waiting for some finishing touches. These socks are one such project - I finished knitting them a while ago (while watching old CSI reruns at my friend鈥檚 house, hence the name), and I finally got around to weaving in ends and blocking them. At least it has been far too hot to wear them, so I haven鈥檛 been missing out on anything!

Scissors, Lizard, Spock Socks

This is a tale of a project languishing for a very long time, despite the fact that this yarn is gorgeous. I purchased this yarn (Into the Whirled, Pakokku Sock) at Rhinebeck in 2016, and despite grand intentions of knitting it up right away, it sat sadly in the bottom of my yarn trunk for a year and a half. I finally decided to knit them into socks, and at this point, I even got so far as to finish 99% of the process before leaving them to languish once more with no ends woven in the yarn pile of doom. Enter the MCAT - a truly terrible standardized test that drives you to the worst levels of procrastination, such as catching up on laundry and weaving in hundreds of ends. On the plus side, now I have a pair of wool socks ready just in time for our 32潞C heatwave...聽
Stay tuned for more procrastination project finishes!

The Netherlands and Belgium
In May, my mom and I went to the Netherlands and Belgium to visit family and to do some sightseeing. Highlights of the trip include the Keukenhoff, Efteling, and a kayaking trip.

Lowlights include my phone and passport getting soaking wet on said kayaking trip, so we had to visit the military police in the Netherlands to have my passport validated, so ensure that I could get home. I also had an expensive time replacing the passport and phone when I made it home (which I did, luckily!)

All-in-all, a good trip!

Flax Light

I finally finished the sweater that I鈥檝e had on my needles since August! I had taken quite a break from it to knit Christmas presents, but following the holidays I picked it back up again and was determined to finish it.
I love how it turned out! There鈥檚 enough positive ease to make it just the right amount of oversized, without looking too huge on me. Funny story - when I first blocked it, I tried to lay it out flat to dry, and it grew so much that it could have fit a gorilla. My friends tried to convince me that it couldn鈥檛 be that bad, but one look at it and they were laughing so hard they cried. It was, in fact, that bad. After some some frantic research regarding the yarn, I realized it was superwash, wet it again and threw it in the dryer to dry. Thankfully that worked, and I鈥檒l have to do that from now on when I wash it!
My Ravelry project is here, and the pattern is a free one by Tin Can Knits (here). I modified the neckline to add a scoop as well as the gauge to be able to use this yarn, but otherwise I knit it as written. I would definitely recommend it, and may eventually knit it again!
