Barcelona
uAfter our weekend in London, my sister and I flew to Barcelona for two nights. This was both of our first time in Spain, and it was an absolute blast.
Tumblr media
One of my favorite things about Barcelona (besides beer/sangria/paella) was all of the palm trees. Really puts you in a holiday mood!
Tumblr media
Parc de la Ciutadella was one of my favorite discoveries in Barcelona
Tumblr media
We had so many fun wandering these streets and people watching.
Tumblr media
Paella and an obscene amount of sangria on the beach - amazing
Tumblr media
You can’t beat lunch with a view like this! Xiringuito
Tumblr media
We spent a lot of time (three trips exactly) drinking at the W Hotel. Absolutely no regrets.
Tumblr media
One of my favorite stops was exploring Casa Battlo - one of Gaudi’s most famous designs
Tumblr media
The colors and architecture are meant to remind you of the sea - so stunning
Tumblr media
Barcelona was wonderful. I lost track of how many times I sang Despacito, and ate more tapas than I could ever count. I’ve never been to a city that is urban and beachy at the same time in the way that Barca is! Highly recommended, and I will be back!

Katie’s Visit to London
At the end of May, my 17 year old sister visited me in London as a way to celebrate her graduating high school and starting college. We had an absolute blast while she was here with a very jam packed schedule.
First and foremost, I took her to my favorite pub (Princess of Wales in Primrose Hill) to try my favorite beer (Beavertown Gamma Ray)
Tumblr media
Then we ventured to the Churchill War Rooms - a spot in London we’d both been meaning to visit for years
Tumblr media
This was an absolute delight and we got our full fix of history
Tumblr media
I also learned that Winston Churchill and I had a lot in common!
Tumblr media
Next, I took her to Notting Hill to shop around and see some of the cutest houses in London.
Tumblr media
I also took her for arguably the most English experience ever - Pimm’s and a scone on Hampstead Heath!
As a surprise gift for her high school graduation and 18th birthday, I got Katie and I tickets to see Don Juan in Soho starring David Tennant. This was a gift for her, but also very much a gift for me since David Tennant is definitely bae. In a surprise turn of events, we ended up getting upgraded to better seats for free and had 3 Jack and Cokes each, only 2 of which we paid for! Even without all of that, this show was an absolute delight and worth every penny. Tennant and the entire cast were hysterical, and I laughed the whole time.
Tumblr media
Naturally, we went backstage afterwards to try to snap a selfie. Sadly, this is the best we could get since Doctor Who fans are apparently very aggressive! Needless to say, we had an amazing weekend in London. Next stop, Barcelona!

Venice
This April, my amazing family friends were kind enough to let me crash their trip to Venice, Italy. It has always been a dream of mine to go to Venice, and this trip did not disappoint.
Tumblr media
The trip consisted of a lot of Aperol with unparalleled views. Yum.
Tumblr media
Every corner you turned was even more gorgeous than the last. There are no cars in Venice, and it is very easy (and enjoyable) to get lost.
Tumblr media
View of Plaza San Marco from above
Tumblr media
Hangover pizza for us, regular pizza for Sofie
Tumblr media
Gondola ride through Venice - you just have to
Tumblr media
The amazing island of Burano. You have to spend an afternoon here eating and strolling around!
Tumblr media
Such beautiful colors in Burano
Tumblr media
One of the 4 desserts we had a day while in Venice.
Our trip to Venice was so incredibly enjoyable. It is such a unique place to visit! The sights are incredible and the food is delicious. It is definitely a touristy place. Until we ventured out to the Jewish Quarter, it did not feel at all like a place where real people actually live. Because of this, I nicknamed it ‘the Disney of Italy.’ It was very crowded with tourists all over, and we were only there in mid-April. I can’t imagine how crowded it must be from Easter onwards, so if you are opposed to crowds I would keep this in mind. I am so glad I visited and I think everyone should, but I would only plan 3 or 4 nights here and spend more time in other parts of Italy.

Prague
The next stop on our famliy holiday was Prague. We took the train from Munich, which was a very relaxing way to travel.

Trdelnik - the best dessert ever found everywhere in Prague
Of the two cities we visited on our family holiday, Prague was definitely my favorite. The city is so incredibly beautiful, and everything is so much more affordable than other European cities I have visited. It was great coming here with my family, and I would love to visit again with friends and experience the Prague nightlife. If you haven’t been to Prague, definitely make sure it is on your list.

Munich
This year for our family vacation, my family flew to Europe and we visited Munich and Prague. It was such a lovely time exploring new cities! First stop - Munich!
Tumblr media
Steins in Hofbrauhaus, Munich
Tumblr media
It wouldn’t be a Czajka vacation if my parents didn’t force us on a Hop On/Hop Off bus tour...
Tumblr media
Fussen - the cutest German village
Tumblr media
Climbing up to see Neuschwanstein Castle - the most incredible sight
Tumblr media
Rose in the sun
I really enjoyed visiting Munich with my family. It was a great chance to see a city and country that I’ve never visited before. While we were there, we visited Dachau, which was the first concentration camp built in Nazi Germany. It was a very difficult visit, but I am extremely humbled and grateful that I was able to have the opportunity to experience the history first hand.
Munich was not my favorite city I’ve ever visited. It was a bit dry, everything closed very early and there wasn’t the energy that I’ve noticed in other European cities. That being said, the history was incredible and I’m very glad we were able to visit!

Copenhagen in March
In early March, I ventured to Copenhagen with my flatmate and our friend in celebration of her starting a new job. I only went for a night - but one night was long enough to make it one of my new favorite cities!
Tumblr media
Nyhavn - one of the cutest places I’ve ever been to
Tumblr media
View from Christiansborg Palace - amazing and free!
Tumblr media
The menu at War Pigs - an amazing craft beer bar that is connected to Three Floyds back at home!

Disneyland Paris Trip
This weekend, my best friend Elinor and I went to Disneyland Paris for the weekend!
Tumblr media
We are both Disney fanatics... and the park was having a deal for 60 EUR for one day, which for Disney is a steal. The flights were inexpensive, and I booked us an Airbnb in Chessy, which is the town right next to Disneyland Paris. The Airbnb was a one bed flat with a full kitchen, washer/dryer, and living room. It was lovely! Sadly, we pretty much only went there to sleep and I didn’t stop to take any photos.
Tumblr media
The park was open 10 AM to 9 PM. We took an easy and cheap Uber from our Airbnb to the park and hit Starbucks for breakfast. Sadly, it poured the entire day that we were there. Amazingly, we still had an absolutely amazing time. This was my first ever trip to a Disney park without my family! I had previously been to Disneyland Paris when I was 17.
Tumblr media
For those of you who are more familiar with Walt Disney World, Disneyland Paris is a much much smaller take on Disney. However, if you go with the right expectations, it is still a really nice time!
Tumblr media
It is a beautiful park, with many similarities to Disneyland in California and the Magic Kingdom in Florida. Sadly, Space Mountain and Pirates of the Caribbean were closed while we were there, which I think contributed to the cheap tickets. We also didn’t manage to make it on some of the big ticket rides like Ratatouille, Crush’s Coaster, and Rock’n Rollercoaster. The park was really crowded, and the lines for these rides was often longer than two hours. Despite this, we hit all the classics in the Disneyland section (Haunted Mansion, Peter Pan, It’s a Small World) and had an absolute blast.
Tumblr media
We made sure to hit one of my personal favorites, Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin, and I hit what I’m pretty sure was an all-time high! 218,100!
Tumblr media
It was such a great time just being a kid for a day (with a few adult beverages at the end of the evening). This morning, we caught an early flight back to London so we can go ahead and go back to being adults tomorrow. I have to be up at 4 in the morning to catch a flight to Edinburgh for work... but at least I will be going to bed basking in the joys of a wonderful weekend holiday with a great friend!

First Solo Trip to Paris
After a rough last month, a few weekends ago I decided to take a very impromptu solo trip to Paris. I was a bit nervous about this as I’ve never travelled alone, but I thought it was the perfect opportunity to hang out with me, myself, and I in one of the most beautiful cities in the world.
Tumblr media
I stayed in a really nice Airbnb in the Latin Quarter. I awoke on Friday morning, turned one corner, and immediately could see the Eiffel Tower. I cannot put into words how surreal this was.
Tumblr media
I decided in order to really be present and center myself, I needed to leave my headphones in my purse and completely immerse myself in my surroundings. I can’t remember the last time I have felt this aware. Sights, smells, tastes... everything was better. I wandered all day long, stopping for food or a drink whenever I wanted.
Tumblr media
I walked all the way to the Tuileries, where I had the best croque monsieur I have ever had in my life. The sun was shining, people were out laughing, and I was in complete heaven.
Tumblr media
In need of some major retail therapy, I did some serious shopping. I got a new nude lipstick from MAC, a hat and tights from Monoprix, and a book about fashion in cities around the world from Colette. A family friend recommended Colette to me, and it is now my favorite store in Paris. It is full of quirky books, sunglasses, knick knacks, and clothes and plays the best music. A definite must-see.
Tumblr media
Later in the afternoon, I went to Angelina, which is known around the world for serving the best hot chocolate in the world. After tasting it, and their amazing Mont Blanc, I will not be arguing this statement.
Tumblr media
After all the shopping and snacks, the sun was pretty much set and the Eiffel Tower was lit in the most stunning way. I had visited Paris when I was 17 and thought the Eiffel Tower was amazing, but this is even better than I remember. The twinkling was absolutely incredible.
Tumblr media
I ended the night with traditional steak frites and a glass of Merlot at a nearby brasserie. One of my favorite aspects of this weekend getaway was being able to practice my French, which I have not used much since I graduated high school. I’m proud to say that I am still quite conversational!
Tumblr media
I am so incredibly grateful for the experience of traveling alone to Paris. My love for this city has completely rekindled, but more importantly I have rekindled my love for myself. Any anxiety that I had about traveling alone is gone, and I cannot wait to plan more weekend getaways during my time in Europe. I love traveling with others, but it is nice to know that I will always enjoy myself no matter who I am with or where I am going. La vie en rose!

In the Heights
Last Saturday, I had the pleasure of going with good friends to see the penultimate performance of Lin Manuel Miranda’s (you know, the guy who wrote Hamilton..) first musical In The Heights. This was my first West End musical! We had dinner in a nice, albeit extremely loud, restaurant in King’s Cross and then headed to the show.
Tumblr media
It was one of the most energetic productions I have ever seen, and the entire show was basically a party. It tells the story of a group of Latino neighbors living in Washington Heights, NYC... and is now by far one of my favorite musicals. I wish that I could recommend you go see it, but it is now finished running in London. My only regret is that we saw the second to last show and not the final, because (as my flatmate and I suspected) Lin Manuel Miranda himself showed up to the final showing and took lots of selfies with his fans. Sigh. That could’ve been us.
Seeing In The Heights definitely triggered a musical/West End production bug in me, and now I want to see as many shows as my budget and schedule will allow! Here’s praying I can get Hamilton tickets...

2016.
2016 was, by far, the most monumental year of my life to date. If I had to pick a theme for it, it would be change... and travel. I pretty much threw my entire life into upheaval this year, but those were the two constants: change and travel. I couldn’t possibly touch on every aspect of this whirlwind year in one post, but I’m going to make my best attempt to hit the highlights.
Tumblr media
March: I went to Mexico with my best friend
Tumblr media
...where I met a new best friend who is also my boyfriend
Tumblr media
And a week later went on the first of many London/Edinburgh trips with my family
Tumblr media
June... graduating from DePaul University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Information Systems
Tumblr media
to.....my great western vacation starting with the long-awaited 21 Vegas trip with Grandma and Grandpa
Tumblr media
...to California to visit my amazing family
Tumblr media
July.... moving to London
Tumblr media
August... spending two weeks in New York City
Tumblr media
...and turning 22 in Dublin
Tumblr media
September... Run the River 10K
Tumblr media
October... Amsterdam with my other Megan
Tumblr media
...and Vienna with my love
Tumblr media
November in Staten Island and Chicago for Thanksgiving...
Tumblr media
...and December at home for the holidays.
Writing this has actually made me realize even more how incredible this year actually was. When I say incredible, I mean it in many ways. It was incredibly exciting, incredibly fortunate, incredibly wonderful, incredibly difficult. It was just incredible. Looking back on the corners of the world that I was able to visit this year has me feeling like the luckiest girl in the world, but I am also very aware of the countless hours of hard work that I put in and still put in so that I can have these experiences. If 2016 is any indication of the years to come, these might just be the best, most difficult years of my life.

Christmas in Chicago
This year, I was so lucky to be able to go home to Chicago for just over two weeks for Christmas. It was the perfect way to reset and relax after four months of incredible, albeit exhausting work, travel, and exploration in London. Unfortunately, the first week leading up to Christmas I got the stomach flu that seems to be going around all over the world. It sucked, but I do have to say if I was going to get the stomach flu, at home where my mom and dad could take care of me 24/7 was ideal. I also watched This Is Us all the way through, and sobbed the whole time. Probably my new favorite show currently on television.
The second week, my beau came to visit my family in Chicago. I had to show him all the Chicago Christmastime classics, so we went to Marshall Field’s to see the windows, the Lincoln Park Zoo for the lights, and drove past Water Tower Place. We also went to All Chocolate Kitchen in Geneva to see the 1200 lb solid chocolate tree, and eat some delicious gelato.
We also went to Funway, an amazing roller-rink/bowling alley/arcade near my hometown. Since a little kid, I have always thought rollerskating is one of the most underrated activities ever, and going to the rollerink was one of my favorite pasttimes. It was so fun to go and rollerboogie with my boyfriend, best friend, and sisters.
My trip home was filled with so much food, so much merry, and so much love. I cannot thank my friends, family, and boyfriend enough for giving me such a wonderful holiday homecoming. I cannot wait to see you all again soon.

The Holiday Season in the UK
Tumblr media
One of the things that I was most excited for moving to London was seeing the holiday season (arguably my favorite time of the year) in a new place and country. London, and the UK in general, did not disappoint. The decorations and all around atmosphere were absolutely incredible. Above is a picture of a gorgeous tree in Leadenhall Market that I came across on my lunch break during work.
Tumblr media
I also had the pleasure of going to the 10th Annual Winter Wonderland in Hyde Park. My friends and I went on a Saturday evening, which in terms of crowds, was not the best idea. However, the energy was incredible, the lights beautiful, and the mulled wine delicious! If you are in London at Christmas, I think you have to go at least once.
Tumblr media
I also enjoyed more than one Christmas party thrown by my office. After four months of hard work and training, it was really nice to be rewarded and celebrate the holiday season with colleagues and good friends.
Tumblr media
One of the best traditions at my office is called 12 Pubs, in which everyone goes to Edinburgh on a Saturday for a pub crawl. It is mandatory to have at least one drink at each pub.... and the day/night gets more and more fun as it goes on. Definitely a great tradition! I was also able to see the Edinburgh Christmas markets while visiting, which were stunning.
Tumblr media
I’m so grateful that I was able to enjoy some of the holidays in London, and have an entirely new cultural experience surrounding Christmas. There is definitely a feeling of magic in London at Christmastime. Everyone is merry, everything is warm, and everything is just a bit more relaxing. It was a great way to end the working year and prepare to head home to Chicago!

This Thanksgiving, I decided to surprise my mom and fly home to Chicago. I planned it in August and let me dad and sister in on the secret. My sister picked me up from the airport, where I came home and saw my mom for the first time in more than four months. The video says it all.

Visiting Vienna: The Heurigen
On my last European weekend getaway to Vienna, I had such an incredible time at the heurige, or Viennese wine taverns, that I’ve decided to dedicate an entire post to it. Vienna is one of the only cities in the world where wine grapes are grown within city limits. Because of this, the outer-skirts of Vienna have taverns that serve wine the made themselves. I read about the taverns being a great place to go for a cozy atmosphere, authentic food, and delicious wine. On Sunday, John and I took the D tram all the way north to Grinzing, where we were able to hop to three different taverns.
Tumblr media
Traditionally, the taverns will hang a pine branch outside if they are currently serving their own wine.
Tumblr media
The first one that we went to, and my personal favorite, was Mayer am Pfarrplatz. This heurigen is famous for being where Beethoven allegedly lived when he was seeking treatment for his ear.
Tumblr media
To start out, we ordered sturm. Sturm is a fermented beverage made from the “must,” or firmly pressed grape juice. Yes, you read that right, it is alcoholic grape juice. The dream! It’s generally only about 4% alcohol content, but it is 100% delicious.
Tumblr media
The mugs that each of the heurigen used were so adorable. When we walked into the tavern, it smelled exactly like my great-grandmother’s house. Delicious, homemade cooking and a warm, family atmosphere.
Tumblr media
We had dinner at Mayer am Pfarrplatz which was delicious. I had the veal dumplings with red cabbage, and John had the fried chicken and potato salad.
After we filled our bellies, we walked to two other heurigen, which were very close by. At each of these, we had their house red wine, both of which were absolutely delightful.
I’m so glad that we ended up taking a trip to see the heurigen. It is not something that is on the main lists of things to do in Vienna, but it is my top recommendation. It is less than an hour from the city center by tram, but you feel like you are being whisked away to another village. We did this in an evening, but I hope to go back and make it a whole afternoon!

Vienna Waits for You
Last week, my boyfriend visited me from the States and we took a weekend trip to Vienna. I have to say that I don’t think I’m ever going to stop being in awe of the ability to hop on a short plane ride and head to so many incredible cities in Europe. It never gets old.
Tumblr media
We arrived on Saturday after a very early morning flight. After we got settled into our Airbnb, we had drinks and delicious burrata at Do&Co, an excellent bar in a hotel with the most incredible view of St. Stephen’s Cathedral.
Tumblr media
For our first Viennese cafe of the weekend, we went to Cafe Landtmann’s where we split an apple strudel and I had a delicious coffee. I absolutely love the culture of Viennese cafes. There’s no rush as you’re just meant to sit, talk, and soak in the atmosphere and delicious food and drink.
Tumblr media
For dinner, we were fortunate enough to get a table at Figlmuller, which is known to have the best wiener schnitzel in Vienna. We split the schnitzel, but luckily we were smart enough to each get our own order of potato salad because I would NOT have been able to share that. Besides my grandma’s, this was the best potato salad and schnitzel I’ve ever had in my life.
Tumblr media
We capped Saturday night off with a trip to Prater, which is one of the oldest amusement parks in Vienna. We went on the ferris wheel which gives stunning views of the city, and then I dragged John on the Hotel Pyscho ride, which I’ll admit was pretty terrifying. Afterwards, we had some much deserved beers int the Schweizerhaus biergarten before finishing the night off at Donau... a really trendy and hipster bar. I have to say, the best part about Donau was the Viennese sausages we had after. They were piled with mayo and mustard and by far the best “hot dog” either of us had ever had.
Tumblr media
Sunday morning, I began the day as everyone should: with cake. We went to Cafe Sacher to have the classic Viennese cake: sacher torte. A lot of people complain that it’s overrated and dry, but I loved it so much I ended up having it twice in one day! It’s so perfectly chocolatey with apricot in the center and delicious whip cream on the side.
Tumblr media
We thought being in one of the most historical cities in Europe that we should probably take a break from eating and drinking and go soak in some history. We went to the Hofburg Palace to see the Sissi apartments. It was very interesting and beautiful, although it did not sell me on being royal! By all accounts... Sissi hated her life as a princess!
Tumblr media
By far, my favorite part of the trip was our trip to the Heurigen. In fact, I loved it so much that I think I’ll write a separate post about it. If you’d like to know more about the delightful wine taverns in Vienna, please click here.
Tumblr media
We ended our trip to Vienna with a horsedrawn carriage ride and a walk around the beautiful Volksgarten park. The carriage ride, while expensive, took us through some of the most historic and beautiful parts of Vienna. So romantic! I completely fell in love with this city, and I would love to go back for the Christmas markets as well as a summer visit.

Girls Weekend in Amsterdam
This weekend, one of my best friends from America came into town and we had a girls weekend in Amsterdam! We were both so excited for this trip, and I have to say it still managed to exceed our expectations.
Tumblr media
We arrived on Saturday afternoon at the most adorable Airbnb ever. The owner, Elize, was extremely friendly and even provided us with a binder including the best trams to take to popular spots. Our patio was the most adorable, quaint space I’ve ever seen and she designed it all herself.
Tumblr media
Our first stop was to get a snack (delicious pretzels) and beer from a nearby bar called Frits. The perfect way to fill up before heading to the Heineken Experience.
Tumblr media
The Heineken Experience was a great experience. It was 18 Euro for the tour which included two beers. It was very interesting learning about the history of Heineken and seeing how the beer is made. I have to say I enjoyed this more than Guinness, mostly because I enjoy Heineken more than Guinness.
Tumblr media
Sunday, and the entire weekend for that matter, the weather was perfect. We did a boat cruise called G’s Brunch Boat, which for 40 EURO takes you on a two hour cruise of the Amsterdam canals and includes an alcoholic beverage, a regular beverage, a hot beverage, a main course, and a dessert. This was absolutely worth every penny.
Tumblr media
The boat was adorable. It played great jams, the views were incredible, and the menus were on old records! All in all, despite being a little pricey, this was a highlight of the trip for me.
Tumblr media
Afterwards, we went to the Anne Frank house. We ended up waiting quite a long time because a poor woman in the museum slipped down the stairs and broke her leg. However, I’m really glad that we waited it out. It has been a dream of mine since I was a little girl to go to the Anne Frank museum, and it was really inspiring to see it in real life.
Tumblr media
For dinner, we went to a traditional Dutch restaurant and enjoyed delicious schnitzel and wine on the canal. It was the perfect last meal to an absolute perfect trip!
Tumblr media
As a “because we have to” thing at the end of our trip, we took a walk over to the Red Light District. I won’t say much about this except for the fact that I wasn’t a fan. It’s pretty sad and a little disturbing... but at least I can check it off the list. I can say that it was very populated, so if you do go to Amsterdam and want to see it, it is by no means unsafe.
Tumblr media
To complete the trip, we went to the Amsterdam IceBar. While it was super touristy, I have to say I’m so glad we went. For 18 Euros you get three drinks: two in the IceBar and one in the regular bar. We got all cozy in the coats and enjoyed delicious ice cold Heinekens in glasses made entirely of ice. It was absolutely an experience I would recommend to anyone looking for something different!
I was not expecting to love Amsterdam quite this much, and I am definitely planning on going back. Thank you, Megan, for being such a great travel partner!

Flat Iron Steak and the Girl on the Train
Last weekend, I had a wonderful girl’s night with one of my friends from work.
Tumblr media
For dinner, we went to Flat Iron Steak in Shoreditch. The concept is simple: you pay 10 GBP for a flat iron steak cooked how you like it (I went for medium rare). It comes with a small side salad, and then you can add various sides. I got it with horseradish and a side of eggplant. The steak was absolutely delicious and was sprinkled with sea salt. It was perfectly cooked and a really quality meal for such a reasonable price. You also get popcorn as a snack at your table, and the menu had a pretty extensive drink menu.
Afterwards, we headed to Canary Wharf to see The Girl on the Train. I have been eagerly awaiting this film as I read The Girl on the Train in one day earlier this year before I moved to London. I won’t give too much away; suffice it to say that I liked the movie but (cliche as it may sound) the book was better. First of all, I do not understand why they switched a story set in London to New York, and then cast an English lead. Um??
Also, I think many fans of The Girl on the Train would agree with me that this story simply translates better on paper. That being said, Emily Blunt was absolutely incredible in the lead role. She nailed the role of Rachel, and I think she deserves all the awards. All in all, it was a Friday very well spent.
