Field Work Assignment
Immigrant interviewed : Elnara Karadzhayeva
As I interviewed Elnara I was not surprised at all but in fact inspired. There were many pushes and pulls that caused her & her family to immigrate here in the United States in 2005. I was told the reasoning for them leaving Russia was for better opportunities for better jobs and education. They wanted to live in a better city like environment which lead them to one of the best places for new experiences- New York. They were used to a more farm like environment where she would milk goats and do a lot of agricultural activities. I gathered that her incorporation to this new country is just like every other teenager. Meaning that getting a good education and becoming successful is very essential for her and her family. There are a lot of differences that were explained to me between U.S and Russian cultures. Since she is a now female in the U.S she realizes that we are a lot more independent. Us women do not need men to do anything because here we can provide for ourselves which is normal. Gender roles are different also because back in her home her family would pick out a husband for her. Since I was born and raised in the U.S I will fall in love and marry a man on my own terms. Expectations are set very high for her. Because her mother was able to come over work 2 jobs and do school to become a optician she expects her to do even more. I notice that her mother and father put a lot of pressure on her to be great and have more than they did at the age she is. It is different for her because they didnât have the opportunities she had at a younger age which gives them an excuse. Overall being a Muslim, Turkish, young girl there are a lot of obstacles she will face but because her parents decided to raise her in New York she will now get the chance to be the lawyer of her dreams and hopefully in the future allow immigrants like her to come over and let their dreams come true as well.

Field Work Assignment Chapter 12
Hersheyâs Chocolate Bar
â˘The working and living conditions are not that good with the people who produce cocoa. They handle pesticides without the proper clothing, have excessive hours & dangerous tools. The living conditions are hot & poor.
⢠The cocoa is produced by getting cocoa pods that are harvested by trees, taking beans out of the pods and fermenting and drying them. Child laborers were involved.
â˘They get the cocoa to the market by packing them into sacks to be transported to the market in trucks.
â˘The prices are set based on supply and demand levels.
â˘International Corporations such as the ICCO that dominate the trade. Chocolate is regulated by TransFair USA.
â˘Chocolate is marketed by having a target audience meant for the everyday consumer, it is also given a rich and good image, given specific ingredients to indulge taste enhancing buyers.
â˘You can buy it at almost all stores including grocery stores, markets, corner stores, drugstores etcâŚ
⢠A store makes a ranging amount of profit off of one chocolate bar such as location, season, etc..
⢠There are hidden costs that get obscured by the actual flavor of the chocolate using cheap & artificial ingredients, they also donât show you all the destruction of rainforest because big corporations cover up the horrible factors with there big names and other things.

Field Work Assignment Chapter 11
According to Science News Daily social class is necessary. Social class was relevant in the past and is still occurring today. The information in this article is presented by Goethe University Frankfurt. Researchers say that individuals who grow up in a working class environment take on usual behavior for that class. This is also true for people who grow up in an acedemic household. The study shows that people donât just act with class specific behaviors but also behaviors of the counterparts in other classe. This means that people donât just act accordingly to the certain classes they are in but also the opposite of other classes.
A large amount of research was inspired and stemmed from Pierre Bourdieu. They had got many ideas from him such as the environment people grow up in plays a big part on their identity. They say that people act cooperatively to the social class in which they were born in. People who were said to be more assertive had a better chance at social advancement. This article was a good eye opener to show how people could be influenced by the social class theories.

This is the Mack-Hedgepeth family tree. Here we have both my mothers & dads sides of the family. As you can see my fartherâs side is a lot bigger because he has way more siblings than my mom. What is present is all of my blood aunts & uncles from my mother & father. I have a total of 2 uncles and 3 aunts. What is not present in this tree are all of my cousins. I realized that most of the cousin on my moms side comes from my grandparents because my grandmother had 2 sisters so all the cousins coming from my aunts ( my grandmothers sisters) are not present on the tree. So basically my mom side is missing a lot of family members.

Chapter 7 Assignment
While spending some time at the exhibit located in the lobby of BSSC I was able to read a lot of interesting stories from African Americans. I enjoyed viewing the different peopleâs pictures and testimonies and taking in the information that was presented with them. These African Americans all had something in common, all of them being in Germany. They shared the same nation state but still had their own unique characteristics, and problems they faced. They had different ethnicities, races, religions and more. Below are some pictures that I took at the exhibit :

I found this quote by Peggy Piesche very interesting because it allows you to think about all the undiscovered things that exists in the Afro-German culture. It also can explain that there is some things about there history that they are unaware of that should and can be brought to light.

Otto Addo spoke about racism. He believe that it was wrong and unfair among people. It was made very clear that it didnât matter who you were. Racism was still common and relevant against the black communities. He believe in standing up to make a change.

This image includes writing about communities and black culture. The Afro-Germans expierenced some multiculturalism that expanded their communities.

These are images of some of the Morgan students enjoying the exhibit and taking in informantion just like I did.

Chapter 6 Assignment

This is an example of race. These hands show that there are many different races across the world . People being of different skin colors can help determine there race. This shows that there are many different type of people who have different skin tones & races everywhere.
This gif represents racism. In the picture it is explained that MLK day is just pretended to be cared about. This means that people donât actually care about integration, nonviolence, and racial harmony. They donât care or want to be joined with the blacks. When MLK day arrives people have to act like they care about black people and the issues that they have and still are facing because it is a holiday.

This meme describes racism. This is an example of police brutality. Colored people expiernce serious encounters of police brutality everyday just because of the color of their skin. This meme is supposed to be a joke but it isnât in anyway funny. It is rude and unfair. It shows that white peopl always get always get away with things which is a big issue in racism.
This news artlie from the new York Times talks about race. It talks about how people of Japanese mixed culture are. It also shows how race has change for them over time. Many years ago people of the Japanese mixed culture were picked at for not being fully Japanese. Now they have have a following and are looked up to for being âimperfectâ. This shows you that not everyone from the same race is the same and that that is okay.
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=FFTjZilAwhM
This video shows how people can be racist but how others can try to stop racism. White people do ignorant things all the time but if there was someone there showing them or even told them they were wrong maybe the would follow the example. In the video the white man was willing to hold the elevator for a woman of the same race as him but not a woman of color. The woman he held the door for didnât agree with his actions and decided to stand up to him. We need more people like that.

This tweet is an example of racism. This person who is verified on Twitter meaning they have a huge follow basically stated that Uber or Lyft shouldnât have Islamic drivers. Also says that she doesnât want to support them because they are Islamic. This shows racism because she is purposely excluding them because of there race. Calling them immagrants when probably not knowing for certain just assuming is wrong.

Field Work Assignment
Chapter 5
LaMya Hedgepeth
Proffered Howell
Anthro 101 Essay
September, 29th, 2018
Question 2
Race is defined as a group of people identified as distinct from other groups because of supposed physical or genetic traits shared by the group. Our system of racial classification includes racial groups such as Indian, Asian, Black, White, Pacific Islanders, and Hispanic/Latino. The information in the film challenges our systems norms. We believe that we are all different based off of these racial backgrounds whereas the film shows us that we shouldnât. The film states that are ancestors all came from the same place (Africa). This meaning that technically we all come from the same race because we all have connecting genetic traits leading back to Africa.
In my opinion the film challenges just as much as it reinforces stereotypes of Africa & africans. One popular stereotype is that all Africans are dark skinned. The film clearly challenges this stereotype explaining the reasoning for different shades and skin tones. Depending on where your ancestors migrated and the climate and weather conditions created variations of skin colors. Another stereotype is that Africa is always hot. The film reinforces this stereotype describing how it is close to the equator. They explained that they get many diseases such as malaria because of the temperatures.

Field Work Assignment Chapter 4
Gestures are apart of body language. It is said that if you use them often then you are good communicater. I realized while observing that gestures help emphasize or even give a better explanation when talking. We also use gestures when greeting eachother before the conversation begins. I also noticed that gestures can differ between genders. When men see their friends they do what is called âslapping eachother upâ where as females will just hug. But if not physically wanting to touch people will just do a basic wave of the hand. While sitting in class I noticed that professor use gestures to give a visual demonstration. When my professor was explaining the increase of pressure he used his hand and arm to show that it was on an incline upward to let everyone it was increasing. My math professor also used his fingers to show the numbers to the solution. If the answer was 4 he would put up 4 fingers. Sometimes gestures are used in place of talking. This happens so commonly that you do not need to speak or use words for people to understand you. When my friend didnât know what was going on she would shrug her shoulders with her palms facing the ceiling. By doing this everyone knew that she was unaware. They can also show how important something is. By showing if something is small or big it lets you know the serious of the situation. Gestures are just another way of communicating whether you are saying no or inviting someone to come sit with you I realized it just gives the person you are communicating with a visual so they can better comprehend.

Field Work Assignment Chapter3

I chose the Athletic Training Room. This is a room where athletes go to get physical exams, ice , wrapped for injuries, medication and more. What drew me to this location was that I havenât been inside since i first got to Morgan and had to do my physicals. I just remembered all the different things that were in there and all the people that came in and out that day . I thought it would be a good place to observe since Iâm not an injured athlete I donât really have much need to be inside the training room like some of my teammates. Inside I found a medicine desk that was full of everything the atheletes would need. There was so many different kinds of tape, peroxide, alcohol, Neosporin, cotton swabs, and so much more. There was also 3 beds on each side diagonally across from each other . There was an office with computers and a table covered in papers. There was also an exam room which had one bed inside and a room with ice baths inside.
One thing I noticed in my observations that I hadnât noticed before was the room with ice baths . When you are inside the training room it is usually for something specific so I donât think I ever realized that room was there. I noticed in my observation because a boy had walked out the room dripping wet which caused some curiosity for me to look for my self .
In my observations I noticed that there were a few things absent that I would expect to be there. One thing I noticed was that when the boy was finished with his bath there were no clean towels available for him to use. He was just standing there dripping for minutes . You would expect for them to be laid out somewhere for people to pick up and use. Also there wasnât much structure to the way the kept people organized. Someone could be standing there for a long time before some one ask if they needed help. You would expect them to say if you are not down here for therapy or an appointment (which I wasnât) that you need to leave. There was no authority . No one was in charge. You could walk in and out as you please.
I originally went on a Thursday afternoon at like 2 pm. It was very packed and there were people everywhere. I went back after practice around 5:30 to see that it was hardly anyone there and it was much more quiet. I think this is because by 5:30 all the athletes are done with practice and cheerleaders are the last to practice so there wasnât a reason for anyone to be down there.

I noticed doing this assignment that I am very fortunate. It truly shows you how many unnecessary products you have. Like some products I have so many of (quantity) that I donât need all of them just a few. This shows you that in our culture we get a lot more than we actually need. Where in other countries they donât get enough. I also noticed that in our culture we care a lot about the quality of the item we would rather pay for an expensive product with good quality than the cheaper version of what we need. Although not everybody may not believe the things I have written as needs I explain why I believe I need them. I believe that needs are something that would make life difficult to do day to day things, where wants are just cool extras.

Field Work Assignment Chapter 1

What is it ? Where do the ingredients come from? This is the Kylie cosmetic Champagne Showers highlight. Inside you will see 1 pressed illuminating powder highlighter used for when doing your makeup. The ingredients come from numerous minerals including talc, magnesium,& more.
Who made it ? What is their life like ?
Kylie Jenner designs and creates the formula of her products but they are produced by the employees of Spatz labs. These employees are of all different ethnicities, racial, & religious backgrounds (majority Hispanic). They have normal everyday lives outside of work although some work longer than the average person (working long hours in the lab). The work in the lab can be very hard for some which can interfere with their everyday lives( no benefits, short breaks, hot & packed work space, drama-prone, no raise, health issue due to long period of standing, small pay, racists etc..).
What is the impact of the highlights on local community where itâs produced ? Where is it consumed?
The highlights donât have a big impact on the community besides that there are a lot of makeup artists in the area where it is made (Oxnard, CA). There is also market for a lot of supercenters there with shopping. It is consumed internationally, unfortunately you can only purchase it online.
What is the relationship between the people who make the highlight ? Do they work the factory that makes it? How much do they earn ? How much has the factory changed their lives? Has it affected people in the community based on age gender or class?
The relationship between the people who make the product is very competitive. They are always fighting for favoritism. The people who make the highlight work in the lab where all of Kylieâs products are created. They only earn a small pay of minimum wage. The factory has changed lives for some giving them a place to work to provide for their families. It has affected the community based on teens and young adults in their 20âs preferably woman in middle to high class giving them good quality makeup.
What do you pay for one highlighter? What are the real social cost of producing makeup? Who pays for them ?
One champagne showers highlight costs $28. The real social cost of producing it is that it affects power systems due to the employees using lots of machinery, which the lab buys. It also can cause pollution because it is not recyclable and uses different chemicals to be created.
What is the environmental impact of making the Kylie product?
It has an impact on the environment because if itâs use of packaging which takes forever to break down, toxic chemicals which end up in the ocean killing animals, toxins that end up in the soil affecting livestock & plants, different oils used resulting in deforestation and possibly even climate change.
