AFDP Ch.10: Intrusion 🔑
oh hi here for my monthly update ha ha
gonna make it out of the void aaaany day now
New chapter out >>here!
I rolled over with a groggy start to see Cal standing, eyes glowing, legs spread and head down as if he were a dog waiting for an attack. His spikes stood stiffly raised along his spine and his wings were flared. It would have been intimidating if he weren’t tiny. I sighed. “Did the kitten try to chew on your tail again?” “No, Jeanne, you gotta wake up and listen to me, okay? Stay very quiet.” His own voice was barely audible. I fumbled for a hair tie and sat up straight. Between his stance and his tone of voice I could tell that this wasn’t a game. Either the kitten had turned out to secretly be a shapeshifting monster, or there was something else going on.  Then I heard it—a faint, distant creak. There weren’t many places in my house that creaked, but perhaps the loudest was between the kitchen and the living room.  “That wasn’t Talsic, was it?” I whispered.

This is the newest installment in my serial story, shared via email, about a washed-up agent trying to save a fugitive, a Warden-in-training investigating a shape-shifting dragon, and a secret in the woods.

AFDP Ch.9: First Encounters
New chapter out!
The single, misshapen eye of the monster filled my field of vision—my mind went blank save for the vision of the eye and its crystalline, insectoid limb, stretched from somewhere above us—behind my own eyes there was nothing but a static buzz of fear and confusion. I had never seen any creature like this before in my life. No index popped into my head, no list of attributes, no idea of what this thing could or would do to us. Frozen in time I crouched there, eye-to-eye with something that didn’t exist, unaware of anything around me except the roar of blood in my ears. The instant shattered with a thin, wispy shriek of half-anger, half-laughter splitting the air; the hanging hand smashed out of place in a blaze of reddish-gold. Mara shoved me backward with a hand to my chest. “Go!” she screamed at me, and I realized she had my baseball bat in her fist, somehow activated so that its aluminum surface writhed with mithecal fire. She had hit the eye—hand—thing— Before I could think anything else, she scrambled past me, out into the forest. I spun around after her as the monster laughed again.

Ch.8: Cautious Returns
Chapter 8 of A Four-Dimensional Plot now live!
"Knock, knock!" A cheerful, accented voice sang from behind me. I spun around in my chair, heart-rate spiking, and resisted the urge to grab for my Rimloc. Mrs. Mei waved at me, smiling, and stuffed a cleaning rag into one of the pockets on her jumpsuit. Typically, I tracked people by their footsteps, which was easy enough in this quiet of an office—but she hadn't made a sound. She had this almost uncanny way of appearing places, as if she just popped up there via teleportation. I swallowed my shock and smiled. "Mrs. Mei! How may I help you?" It would have been better to open with some pleasantries—and a less high-pitched voice—but I was more keyed up than I had realized. She took it in stride. "Oh, no trouble," she said, rubbing at a spot on the cubicle doorway, as if she were here to dispatch an offending smudge of dust. "I only had a small favor to ask of you, since you are very kind."

The Woods at Night
Chapter 7 of A Four-Dimensional Plot now live!
In which Rhys and Mara get into... trouble.
"You know taking a picture of a monster doesn't exactly count as 'experience,' right?" "Ugh!" Mara threw her hands up. "I said, I'm not an idiot! I'll prove it to you, and then maybe then you'll be able to get what I mean through your thick head. Maybe." "Okay," I replied, crossing my arms, "sounds good. Prove it." "Get dressed in normal clothes again and I'll meet you at the kitchen door in ten minutes." "The kitchen door?" My righteous indignation experienced a hiccup. She put her hands on her hips, undetered. "We're going on a field trip."

Sent Through the Motions
Chapter 6 of A Four-Dimensional Plot is now live on my website!
Simple, clever. Not good. But if I told Drake that I had a dragon in the house, that was going to cause more problems than solve them. "What if a squirrel gets in through a window?" I asked with as good of a laugh as I could muster. "It would catch that," Stanton said with a grin, "we will want ways for you to cancel the alarm, too, so that we don't send out the cavalry to fend off a loose rabbit." "This could probably have some good applications for pest control," I said, trying to add on to the joke, trying not to think about the 'pest' in my bedroom. "You could say that's how it's already being used," Moira remarked drolly. She paused. "Not saying that Talsic is a pest, but like, if he turned out to be dangerous, et cetera." "Of course," I agreed, rubbing sweaty palms on my jeans.

Lie: human appearance reflects actual age
Fae can change their human appearances more or less however they prefer (minus stuff like heterochromia). Ripple chose teenager because in some ways it makes him less conspicuous, but he does sometimes change it up to be an older grizzled-looking sailor.
He is secretly wealthy because he's ancient, so, he eats a lot of shell-fish and has stumbled across a lot of "pretty rocks" in them (pearls), and because people keep giving him offerings so he'll help them, and that can include a lot of that gold stuff that he doesn't really need. He's been squirreling away coins and pearls and other stuff in his den for a few hundred years because he doesn't know what else to do with the stuff.
He is a pretty high order of fae with a wide command over water in general. He's adopted the waterfront and this section of the ocean as his main domain, but he also has jurisdiction over a lot of inland water, too. Ripple and Fisher are only two names he's called by, and aren't necessarily his main ones.
🐢
Two truths and a lie, for a character (from this ask game)
Hmmmmmmmm I shall do. Ripple Fisher
He's secretly fabulously wealthy
He's a higher order of water fae than most
His human appearance reflects his actual age

Lie: there are furry dragons in Mithaedrir
(they do sort of exist in a different world of mine, though)
About dragons being the strongest, technically there are physically stronger beings, and technically there are more inherently magical beings, but nothing that can rival their unique blend of physicality and magic.
As for Rhys, yes, actually, his original concept had him in college. I switched things up, though, and now that's his cousin Llewellyn.
Thanks for the ask!
🐳
Two truths and a lie about my main WIP (from this ask game here)
My main WIP rn is A Four-Dimensional Plot, so let's see....
Dragons are the strongest mythical creatures in that world
The secondary protagonist (Rhys) was originally supposed to be in college
Furry dragons are a thing there

The Dragon-Man Teaches Me a Lesson
Chapter 5 of A Four-Dimensional Plot now up on my website!
A laugh, like sticks bouncing off a tin pan, pushed its way through my window’s black-out curtains. “Hello, little one,” came the whisper, scraping along the glass. “It’s cold out here, so very very cold. The frost breaks my fingers so. Won’t you let me in, little one? You who are so warm, imagining yourself so safe under blankets of wool and felt.” It laughed again. As I have said, many of the illdýr feed off of things like emotions. Fear attracts them like fried chicken summons a starving man—and I’ve never not been terrified of them. Night after night after night, something will try to draw me outside, whisper to me, pound on my window, scream at me, drool over a meal it can’t reach but can’t stop smelling. I rarely slept well.

Oof so I have not been keeping up on tumblr.com as well as I was hoping I would. That's partially been because of trying to figure out how to continuously write a serial story, and partially because of how my work schedule is laid out.
But, I'm planning on making some changes to my schedule to make more time for myself, so hopefully in April or May I'll be back on here more consistently.
And also pursuing like five other shiny ideas I had but shhhhh

The lie is: musical instrument!
Unless a recorder when I was a teen counts, but idk if I could still play. I do have a kalimba, though, and I mean to use it someday. But alas, not yet.
ADHD is pretty well confirmed and documented, for better or worse.
I didn't go to a signing, but some authors will sell signed copies, and I happened to find one of those at a Barnes and Noble (it was for Cytonic, by Brandon Sanderson). Good book.
🐝 (If you are still doing the ask game)
:D
I am yes, I just forgot I was a person for a bit adfasasdf. But I'm back. I think.
Thank you so much for the ask!
Two truths and a lie, about myself:
I have ADHD
I own a signed copy of a book
I can play a musical instrument

The real lie is: It already made someone cry.
It hasn't been going for that long, and if someone did cry, they either didn't tell me or. I might have forgot. I can do that sometimes.
But yeah, records show that I first wrote a little drabble between Jeanne and Cal in 2017, and there's a possibility it was actually 2016 (records are inconclusive and have suffered from file transfers).
After reading the second, more official short story (All I Wanted Was a Cup of Tea), my dad sat down with me and told me his thoughts about it and what he thought I should do next in the story. It was kind of sweet, kind of funny.
🐳
Two truths and a lie, about my main WIP (from this ask game)
My main WIP rn would be A Four-Dimensional Plot, so:
It's already made someone cry
I've had the characters for this WIP for almost a decade
My dad has Opinions about where the story should go

And the answer is.....
He's bad at using magic!
Playing the piano is something he and Jeanne actually have in common, and his sister and dad helped make his crossbow for him. But he always complains he can't keep the symbols straight with magic, and honestly? Valid of him. I can't either.
🐢
For you, I shall do Stanton
Two truths and a lie:
He plays the piano
He's bad at using magic
He got his crossbow custom-made
(from >>this ask game. if anyone else wants to join, they can specify which character, too!)

Playacting the Host
Chapter 4 of A Four-Dimensional Plot is now live for the public!
Part of me hoped that it was someone I could simply shut the door on, but logic (and past experience) warned me that, more likely, they were from CENCA. Especially if there were any important calls that I had missed, or, perhaps, a whole work shift. With any luck, though, they wouldn’t be coming in person to fire me—that seemed too inefficient a use of resources for their style.  Pressing my eye to the door’s peekhole, I held my breath. As I had half-hoped, half-feared, Stanton was there, with Moira Bentley—and this time, he’d remembered his coat. His hands were pushed deep into the pockets of said coat, as if he were bracing himself for cold, even though it was warmer today than last night. When I looked out the peekhole again, he cast a glance at the door that I could only describe as anxious. I drew back, fighting down the impression that he had seen me.
