Jai Paul - BSTSU

One for the 'Lauditory Rewind’ archives, I present to you the last song made popular by Rupert Murdoch's version of Myspace.com. This song first became recognized on Myspace on very late 2009/early 2010 as a demo Jai Paul threw up. Soon after, the song stormed through blogs in 2010, and is now longlisted on the NPR's Sound of 2011 poll. Drake had his producer/engineer, 40, sample it for a song, Dreams Money Can Buy, to promote his upcoming album, Take Care. Jai Paul has an album slated to be released through the now giant independent, XL Records. All for good reason: BSTSU is a grand jam. The song builds on itself, and cuts itself down effortlessly. The trading of female and male verses over Pixies-esque soft-loud-soft dynamics keeps things exciting, especially when the roles reverse. There's enough variation in the parts to keep a listener on their toes even after multiple listens. Though the soulful horns signal the songs end, you'll replay the song just to hear it all again. This song is incredibly confident and for good reason: it's that good. Dance music was in the pockets of Parisians from 2005 to 2010. Now, it very much looks like it is London's game.

Deadboy - Down On My Mind Last year, Kanye West took Bon Iver's Woods and turned it into a celebratory closer for his latest opus, My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy (if you find Who Will Survive In America as an epilogue of sorts). This year, Deadboy, of Fireworks Deadboy Slo Mo Edit fame (as BNM'd by Pitchfork, sampling Drake and Alicia Keys), takes Kanye's sample material for a spin. Again, the samples are short, and the most variation offered stems from slight hi hat variations and effects on the vocals. Even with the most overplayed songs, Deadboy makes the smallest of samples work for him in, and makes them sounds exciting again. This is minimalistic future bass at it's finest. Or post dub. Or chillwave. Or whatever they, then we will call it.

DJ Khaled - I'm On One Feat. Drake, Rick Ross, and Lil Wayne. Prod. 40 & T-Minus

Late pass, but I haven't posted in a while. I'm On One by masshimaro This is just a great song that would fit perfectly in your car on a summer night. Drake does the hook masterfully, and his verse is great. Rick's verse is like an extra inning from Ashes to Ashes, and he flows effortlessly over the 40 and T-Minus production. On the subject on production, it's amazing. I'm assuming that T-Minus brought a sound to 40, and 40 did his thing with reverbs and filters, and for just that reason, it sounds more aggressive than most 40 beats, which is fun to hear. The only downside to this song is the lackluster Lil Wayne verse. Lately, he's been rapping like it doesn't matter, and maybe for him, it doesn't. His album's not coming out for another two months, and he's failed to release a single that connects with people who buy records. Seeing as how he doesn't have that audience, and how his latest features sound like throwaways, I don't care if he doesn't do a mixtape to support this album. We simply aren't living with the desperate "Dedication 2, Drought 3, Drought is Over 2-6, Pre-Carter 3, The Leak, Carter 3" Wayne anymore, but instead, we're with the "post jail, post rap rock album, post Best Rapper Alive" Wayne. Oh, I'd be remiss to not mention that Khaled is barely on the track at all. That really helped the track immensely.

Justice Civilization (Demo) Featuring Ali Love This was featured on Ed Banger's Bee Sides, a release for Record Store Day, which, according to the nerds I follow on twitter, was totally awesome. I prefer this version of Civilization, mostly because I associated the scratchy lo fi (and not in a charming way) guitar and awkward hi hat breaks of the original song with the headache inducing ADIDAS commercial it was featured in. The sparseness in the demo adds more to it being a real song, a great song, as opposed to a song being covered up with signature Justice distortion/compression/filter audio tricks that are beginning to show their age in 2011. It makes me wonder "what if" they played this demo into more of a "D.A.N.C.E." single as opposed to making it sound like a strict album, non single cut. Also worth noting is that the last time Justice released a "demo" version of a song, Swizz Beatz commandeered it (twice) and made some rappers a lot of money. Hopefully this time around, we'll end up with better record flips and better raps than what the "D.A.N.C.E." demo spawned as a sample.

You've probably noticed that Lauditory is fairly new. We don't have extensive archives covering all of the amazing music that has been released this last year, so I've decided to introduce 'Lauditory Rewind'. 

Every so often (AKA, whenever I feel like it), I (or Shane) will post something that we weren't around to cover, but would like to mention anyways. 

In this inaugural edition we'll cover Blackenedwhite, one of the most cohesive, and dare I say mainstream, releases Odd Future has put out. 

For those unaware, Mellow Hype consists of Hodgy Beats spitting over production by Left Brain. This isn't their first mixtape, but it's by far their best.

MED - This Is Your Life, featuring Blu, produced by Exile

This song is off of Stones Throw's MED's compilation album titled Bang Ya Head Vol. 3 coming out independently through Fat Beats online, featuring a lot of friends. This precedes his sophomore Stones Throw album, due this summer.

Exile's production takes what could be thought of as stale and makes it very organic. The way he works vocal samples on the hooks on this song is reminiscent of DJ Premier, and the way the samples are chopped together with their lush melodies, and woozy vocal stabs is very J Dilla esque, but when blended together, they become his own sound. It takes a certain level of talent to pay homage to something without sounding like a direct emulation, and Exile pulls that off. MED and Blu do a great job of selling this beat with their reflective verses that the vocal samples beg for.

Curren$y - Scottie Pippen Featuring Freddie Gibbs prod. Alchemist

After a prolific 2010, Curren$y continues in 2011 with a new record deal, and some new sounds. Last year, Spitta was pumping out records with Ski Beatz under a connection through Dame Dash. Today, Scottie Pippen leaks, off of the album titled Covert Coup, with production by Alchemist, out 4/20. Also featured on Scottie Pippen is Freddie Gibbs, who recently just signed a deal with Young Jeezy's Corporate Thug Entertainment, after a great 2010 with the Str8 Killa No Filla Mixtape/EP. Curren$y featuring Freddie Gibbs - Scottie Pippen by Hypetrak Expectedly, Curren$y raps about how and what he rolls, and Freddie Gibbs raps about grimy Gary, Indiana, while celebrating the recently statued Scottie Pippen. Listeners familiar with Curren$y's Pilot Talk and Pilot Talk 2 will notice how Alchemist's production here rolls and vibes much like Ski Beatz recent production, while maintaining the minor eeriness Alchemist beats are known for. Covert Coup is set to be released on 4/20. Curren$y is expected to release Muscle Car Chronicles, a live band backed album, shortly thereafter. It will be accompanied by a film chronicling the creation of the album.

The Weeknd - House Of Balloons/Glass Table Girls by snipelondon

It's a cut off a mix tape by The Weeknd, a secretive new Canadian R&B project. They've been getting a lot of buzz recently, alongside Odd Future member Frank Ocean for taking traditional R&B and mixing things up considerably. I'm all for it, if gems like this come out of it.

Oddly, they seem to have removed the above posted track from their Soundcloud page for the mixtape. Not sure why, especially considering it's the title track (and my favorite). 

The rest of the mixtape is definitely worth a listen as well. Anytime indie darlings Beach House are combined with an R&B project, I'll be there:

So, 'based' music. I admit, I haven't been a fan of everything I've heard so far, but maybe I've been listening to the wrong thing...

I came across this track while listening to the Gorilla vs Bear mix that I linked to earlier. It's a slowed down and stretched out version of an Imogen Heap song by NJ producer Clams Casino. It was officially used in this Lil B track that dropped last year. I'm still mixed on how I feel about Lil B, though I dig him over this beat. 

That said, the instrumental works just as well (better?) with out the based god spitting over this incredible track. Embedded below for your auditory pleasure.
