Hey fellow white people, both within and outside of the U.S., trying to hide behind ignorance here:

Ignorance doesn't save you and it isn't an excuse.

There is no removing this phrase from its genocidal intent. To pretend otherwise is to remain willfully ignorant to protect your own ego. You never thought about the phrase beyond "cool;" please recognize that position as one of intense privilege.

Confront the fact we as white people have contributed to and benefited from racism and white nationalism, unknowingly or willingly. The end result is the same: we did. It should cause you discomfort.

You have many people politely educating you about the genocidal intent behind this phrase. Pushing back on that education because of the discomfort it causes is an insult on top of injury, and furthers the genocidal goal of white supremacy.

If we continue to center our discomfort at our own contributions to genocide and white supremacy, we make no tracks toward eradicating it. If you hide in ignorance, you only contribute to genocide and white supremacy - the choice to take no action is itself an action taken. Neutrality is not an option.

I am begging people who still say “Manifest Destiny” for any reason to understand that it means, very literally and without exaggeration, “White Power”

Continuing my streak, finally read Trigun Maximum all the way through (yes, by way of dodgy scanlation again)

Required reading, I think.

I have a lot of thoughts, way too fresh and numerous to try and parse out in text, but my most important takeaway is probably: if you're someone interested in the story already, someone intrigued by the aesthetics, or someone who's only watched one of the adaptations so far, you really are not getting the whole story until you read this. There's critical narrative and emotional beats, character arcs, character moments, totally absent elsewhere, and frankly probably impossible to convey in any other medium. I am gripping you by the shoulders and gritting out "Read Trigun Maximum...!" okay?
