Ayoo!!! Don’t know if anybody actually reads these but this is going to be a pretty long one, so strap in. Been a minute since I’ve posted anything, but senior thesis and all that. If you’ve been paying attention to my story, you know I’ve been sharing quite a few process pics of procreate sketches i’ve been doing in my spare time. I’ve enjoyed doing them because I feel like i’m learning a lot about my “style” and how I approach drawing in general. For instance, I think I’m still really self-conscious about putting my stuff out there for the world to see despite feeling like I’m making genuine improvements, and so whenever I do start something new, no matter how simple it is, I tend to sit on it for a long time and keep reworking it until it makes me sick just looking at it. You’d think that after hearing about so many other artists before me go through the exact same thing, I’d take the hint and not do that, but I’m an idiot, so yeah. Anyway, after much deliberation, I decided that *shocker* i should just treat them like sketches and stop overthinking it so much (insert surprised gasp here). I’ve got a whole bunch of these “finished” and even more in the tank, so I hope ya’ll somewhat enjoy them, and if you don’t, who cares, I did ‘em for myself anyway. There’s no real story behind them, just sort of random nameless characters that happened to pop into my head. Even that makes them sound more thought out than they actually were, but you get it. That’s enough rambling, I think I’ll shut up now. So the other day I had to kill a roach that was crawling around my bathroom and it reminded me of another run in I had with a roach a while back. I was on a mission trip with my church to the Dominican Republic and we were staying at the school we were helping out at in Cienfuegos. There was no air conditioning since the neighborhood didn’t get power most days, so we usually slept with the windows open to let the cool air in. I forget which night it was but i remember looking over from where I was lying down on my inflatable mattress and seeing this huge cockroach tightrope-walking across somebody’s phone charger on the other side of the room. Everybody started going wild after I pointed it out. Unfortunately for the roach, he wound up at the wrong end of a shampoo bottle courtesy of my younger brother. Swipe to see the video i managed to dig up of the aftermath, but fair warning it’s mostly a bunch of shirtless dudes. Side note: that was the first and only time i’ve seen anything do a post-mortem twitch outside of a cartoon. It, however, did not actually do a backflip and I have yet to see a roach do one to this day. A lot of the times when I do these sketches in my sketchbook, I don’t really plan anything out. I don’t start with a loose gesture or line of action (like any actually good animator probably would) or even any idea of what I want the person to look like. Instead, I usually just start out by drawing a head and then I tack on body parts until i get something marginally resembling a human (In this case, I didn’t even get around to drawing the hands or feet). The result that I usually end up with is either a really bland and boring pose or one that doesn’t make any sense at all and I somehow have to make it work when I’m doing the final painting. Not really a good habit for an animator to have, but it works just fine for painting practice. Anyhoo, thats the reason why somebody’s aunt is cracking open a cold one and floating two feet above the ground. Side note: never EVER hire me for a t-shirt design, EVER.
