Homegoing: A novel Audiobook
[Audio Books] Homegoing: A novel Audiobook by Yaa Gyasi
Winner of the NBCC's John Leonard First Book Prize A New York Times 2016 Notable Book One of Oprah’s 10 Favorite Books of 2016 NPR's Debut Novel of the Year One of Buzzfeed's Best Fiction Books Of 2016 One of Time's Top 10 Novels of 2016
“Homegoing is an inspiration.” —Ta-Nehisi Coates
The unforgettable New York Times best seller begins with the story of two half-sisters, separated by forces beyond their control: one sold into slavery, the other married to a British slaver. Written with tremendous sweep and power, Homegoing traces the generations of family who follow, as their destinies lead them through two continents and three hundred years of history, each life indeliably drawn, as the legacy of slavery is fully revealed in light of the present day.             Effia and Esi are born into different villages in eighteenth-century Ghana. Effia is married off to an Englishman and lives in comfort in the palatial rooms of Cape Coast Castle. Unbeknownst to Effia, her sister, Esi, is imprisoned beneath her in the castle’s dungeons, sold with thousands of others into the Gold Coast’s booming slave trade, and shipped off to America, where her children and grandchildren will be raised in slavery. One thread of Homegoing follows Effia’s descendants through centuries of warfare in Ghana, as the Fante and Asante nations wrestle with the slave trade and British colonization. The other thread follows Esi and her children into America. From the plantations of the South to the Civil War and the Great Migration, from the coal mines of Pratt City, Alabama, to the jazz clubs and dope houses of twentieth-century Harlem, right up through the present day, Homegoing makes history visceral, and captures, with singular and stunning immediacy, how the memory of captivity came to be inscribed in the soul of a nation.

Homegoing: A novel Audiobook Reviews
Latoya l
It was a great book, in the beginning it was hard to get into, but later i loved it. I loved how each story tied into another showing the lineage back to the motherland. How proud the African culture was, the downfall when the colonizers came, the slavery, the false imprisonment and all the way to today. It showed the kids today going back home to where it all started, Great end!

Malinda Moore
Gorgeously written by the author and beautifully read by the narrator. I frequently listened to some passages multiple times just to savor the sound of the words. I would have given both the book and the narration 10 stars if that were possible.

I listened to this book one year ago, as part of a book club. Incredible story, one that I still think about and discuss today. The story opened my eyes to the slave trading present even in Africa and gave me further appreciation for the history of people before our time. It made me think of my own family history and how I became to be as a result of their own stories. I usually don’t listen to books, as I prefer looking at the written words. However, time doesn’t usually let me indulge as much. I found the narrator, who skillfully used authentic sounding accents, to accentuate the words wonderfully, adding an element to the book that would not have been present in the print. I very highly recommend this book, though parts would not be suitable among children (and awkward around your parents).

This was immaculately written. I could see the amount if research that went into this novel. Presenting the different eras within Ghana/Gold Coast and the USA. I'm from Ghana myself and raised in the UK. I could really relate to Marjorie's story. That being said, the Narrator tried really hard with the west African accent but it was very off. It didn't take away at all so it was fine.

This is a beautifully written piece of art. It encompasses the essence of Africa, dictates the horrors of colonialism and the transatlantic slave trade. The author grabs your interest from the beginning to the end.

This was a fantastic book!! I would recommend googling the character map as it will be helpful as the story evolves!!

This book is amazing, but the narration in this audiobook was equally brilliant. The accents were so wonderful and gave such a delightful, subtle taste to the storytelling. This book is a beautiful audiobook. I'm so glad I "read" it this way.

A perfect, heart-wrenching read. I loved the history and the people introduced and intertwined. I have a long daily commute and it fully occupied me leaving me wondering how I even got to my destination safely - like a time warp. I found myself spending a lot of my breaks outside in my car just to continue listening and even missing the characters throughout the day. Well done!!!

A Million Little Pieces Audiobook Online
[Audio Books] A Million Little Pieces Audiobook Online by James Frey
A searing and controversial story of drug and alcohol abuse and rehabilitation, told with the charismatic energy of Kesey's One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest and the revelatory power of Burroughs' Junky.By the time James Frey enters a drug and alcohol treatment facility, he has so thoroughly ravaged his body that the doctors are shocked he is still alive. Inside the clinic, he is surrounded by patients as troubled as he: a judge, a mobster, a former world-champion boxer, and a fragile former prostitute. To James, their friendship and advice seem stronger and truer than the clinic's droning dogma of How to Recover.James refuses to consider himself a victim of anything but his own bad decisions. He insists on accepting sole accountability for the person he has been and the person he may become-which he feels runs counter to his counselor's recipes for recovery. He must fight to survive on his own terms, for reasons close to his own heart. And he must battle the ever-tempting chemical trip to oblivion.

Meh! I listen to the audio version. Narrator does a great job portraying his anger but the author never figures out what caused the anger issues or how he feels caused his addiction. and he is super repetitive.

Disappointing to hear that this guy has no belief in a higher power, it doesn't have to be God you know, try NA, anything that keeps you from using is a power greater, your own thinking took you to the bar and the dope house and how can you not believe in the 12 steps if you never worked them, it would be interesting see how long he stays clean on his own

I rather enjoyed this book. I only gave it three stars since I do find it is a bit long-winded and drawn out in areas, which made me lose focus or interest. But, all in all, it was a good story. There are other characters besides the author that you connect to and it is definitely a lesson on drug addiction.

Did not care for the writing style. Dont need to hear the same lines repeated numerous times. Fact that its not an actual non fiction book also devalues it for me.

If I had to make a complaint then I guess I’d say that I really hated his relationship with Lily. There are also a ton of redundant words and sentences that were annoying to listen to but it’s a very good book. It’s dark and sometimes feels like something you shouldn’t be listening to but I’m glad I did.

Linchpin: Are You Indispensable? Audiobook Online
[Book] Linchpin: Are You Indispensable? Audiobook Online by Seth Godin
There used to be two teams in every workplace: management and labor. Now there’s a third team, the linchpins. These people invent, lead (regardless of title), connect others, make things happen, and create order out of chaos. They figure out what to do when there’s no rule book. They delight and challenge their customers and peers.  They love their work, pour their best selves into it, and turn each day into a kind of art.                 Linchpins are the essential building blocks of great organizations. Like the small piece of hardware that keeps a wheel from falling off its axle, they may not be famous but they’re indispensable. And in today’s world, they get the best jobs and the most freedom. Have you ever found a shortcut that others missed? Seen a new way to resolve a conflict? Made a connection with someone others couldn’t reach? Even once? Then you have what it takes to become indispensable, by overcoming the resistance that holds people back.              As Godin writes, “Every day I meet people who have so much to give but have been bullied enough or frightened enough to hold it back. It’s time to stop complying with the system and draw your own map. You have brilliance in you, your contribution is essential, and the art you create is precious. Only you can do it, and you must.”

Sixteen-year-old Starr Carter moves between two worlds: the poor neighborhood where she lives and the fancy suburban prep school she attends. The uneasy balance between these worlds is shattered when Starr witnesses the fatal shooting of her childhood best friend Khalil at the hands of a police officer. Khalil was unarmed.
Soon afterward, his death is a national headline. Some are calling him a thug, maybe even a drug dealer and a gangbanger. Protesters are taking to the streets in Khalil’s name. Some cops and the local drug lord try to intimidate Starr and her family. What everyone wants to know is: what really went down that night? And the only person alive who can answer that is Starr.
But what Starr does—or does not—say could upend her community. It could also endanger her life.
And don't miss On the Come Up, Angie Thomas's powerful follow-up to The Hate U Give.

The Little Stranger Audiobook Online
[Audio Books] The Little Stranger Audiobook Online by Sarah Waters
Soon to be a major motion picture, directed by Lenny Abrahamson and starring Domhnall Gleeson and Ruth Wilson.
'The #1 book of 2009...Several sleepless nights are guaranteed.'—Stephen King, Entertainment Weekly
One postwar summer in his home of rural Warwickshire, Dr. Faraday, the son of a maid who has built a life of quiet respectability as a country physician, is called to a patient at lonely Hundreds Hall. Home to the Ayres family for over two centuries, the Georgian house, once impressive and handsome, is now in decline, its masonry crumbling, its gardens choked with weeds, the clock in its stable yard permanently fixed at twenty to nine. Its owners—mother, son, and daughter—are struggling to keep pace with a changing society, as well as with conflicts of their own. But are the Ayreses haunted by something more sinister than a dying way of life? Little does Dr. Faraday know how closely, and how terrifyingly, their story is about to become intimately entwined with his.

Somehow I missed the fact that this book might have been intended for kids or young adults. I am glad that I didn't know because I probably would have passed on this book if I had. I don't review books often, so it's got to be really good or bad for me to take the time. This one....really good. Everything: story, narrator, history, emotion, this book has it all. It deals with complex situations often with humor and always through the eyes of a little 10 year old kid. Please read this book. You will not be sorry.

It is a very clever book. My daughter (11 years) and I found ourselves laughing out loud. I also like the fact that it provided insight for her into that period of our history. Highly recommend.

The Wonder Audiobook Online
[Book] The Wonder Audiobook Online by Emma Donoghue
In this masterpiece by Emma Donoghue, bestselling author of Room, an English nurse is brought to a small Irish village to observe what appears to be a miracle -- a girl said to have survived without food for month -- and soon finds herself fighting to save the child's life.
Tourists flock to the cabin of eleven-year-old Anna O'Donnell, who believes herself to be living off manna from heaven, and a journalist is sent to cover the sensation. Lib Wright, a veteran of Florence Nightingale's Crimean campaign, is hired to keep watch over the girl.
Written with all the propulsive tension that made Room a huge bestseller, The Wonder works beautifully on many levels -- a tale of two strangers who transform each other's lives, a powerful psychological thriller, and a story of love pitted against evil.
Acclaim for The Wonder:
'Deliciously gothic.... Dark and vivid, with complicated characters, this is a novel that lodges itself deep' (USA Today, 3/4 stars)
'Heartbreaking and transcendent'(New York Times)
'A fable as lean and discomfiting as Anna's dwindling body.... Donoghue keeps us riveted' (Chicago Tribune)
'Donoghue poses powerful questions about faith and belief' (Newsday)

Overall the book was enjoyable, in spite of what felt like a slow start, The main character, from whose perspective the story is told, is Lib; it takes time for her to develop a relatable warmth, but it does come around. The book felt a little one dimensional initially, but by the end, there was plenty of layers to peel away that gave it the needed interest. I would recommend this book.

Could hardly put this down. Terrific medical mystery amid culture and religious fervor of post famine Ireland. The reader is perfect, especially the initial haughtiness of the protagonist and the tiny praying voice of her patient.

The narrator used too thick of accents making it hard to understand. Due to this, I would have preferred to have experienced this book as a reader not a listener. I love this author too so it was a disappointment.

The Untethered Soul: The Journey Beyond Yourself Audiobook Download
[Audio Books] The Untethered Soul: The Journey Beyond Yourself Audiobook Download by Michael A. Singer
Who are you? When you start to explore this question, you find out how elusive it really is. Are you a physical body? A collection of experiences and memories? A partner to relationships? Each time you consider these aspects of yourself, you realize that there is much more to you than any of these can define. In The Untethered Soul, spiritual teacher Michael A. Singer explores the question of who we are and arrives at the conclusion that our identity is to be found in our consciousness, the fact of our ability to observe ourselves, and the world around us. By tapping into traditions of meditation and mindfulness, Singer shows how the development of consciousness can enable us all to dwell in the present moment and let go of painful thoughts and memories that keep us from achieving happiness and self-realization.The Untethered Soul offers a frank and friendly discussion of consciousness and how we can develop it. In part one, Singer examines the notion of self and the inner dialogue we all live with. Part two examines the experience of energy as it flows through us and works to show listeners how to open their hearts to the energy of experience that permeates their lives. Ways to overcome tendencies to close down to the rest of the world are the subject of part three. Enlightenment, the embrace of universal consciousness, is the subject of part four. And finally, in part five, Singer returns to daily life and the pursuit of unconditional happiness. Throughout, the book maintains a light and engaging tone, free from heavy dogma and prescriptive religious references. The easy exercises that figure in each chapter help listeners experience the ideas that Singer presents.

Unfortunately, I simply could not listen to this book because the narrator was such a distraction that I could barely concentrate on the message. I loved listening to The Surrender Experiment which Singer narrated himself. The Untethered Soul would have been amazing to have heard the author instead. I have now bought the paperback version so I didn't have to listen to Peter Berkrot's sing-song version.

Because of Winn-Dixie Audiobook
[Audio Books] Because of Winn-Dixie Audiobook by Kate DiCamillo
A classic tale by Newbery Medalist Kate DiCamillo, America’s beloved storyteller.
One summer’s day, ten-year-old India Opal Buloni goes down to the local supermarket for some groceries—and comes home with a dog. But Winn-Dixie is no ordinary dog. It’s because of Winn-Dixie that Opal begins to make friends. And it’s because of Winn-Dixie that she finally dares to ask her father about her mother, who left when Opal was three. In fact, as Opal admits, just about everything that happens that summer is because of Winn-Dixie.

The History of Love Audiobook Online
[Audio Books] The History of Love Audiobook Online by Nicole Krauss
Nicole Krauss' first novel, Man Walks Into a Room, was shortlisted for the Los Angeles Times Book Award and her short fiction has been collected in Best American Short Stories. Now The History of Love proves Krauss is among our finest and freshest literary voices. It has been decades since Leo Gursky first surrendered his heart, then wrote a book about it, at the tender age of 10, and he's been in love with the same person ever since. Leo believes his book is lost to time, but what he doesn't know is, not only has it survived 60 years without him, it has also been an inspiration to others. Fourteen-year-old Alma was even named for a character from the book. When she realizes how deeply the story touched her lonely mother, she embarks on a search for answers. The History of Love is an imaginative tale of love and loss that is at once funny, mysterious, and deeply passionate.

This was a very interesting book. I really like that multiple narrators were used throughout the story as it made it easier to understand what was going on and who was talking, especially in the last parts. It was a bit difficult to follow but by the end all the stories intersect in a satisfying way. Give it a listen.

The Future of the Mind: The Scientific Quest to Understand, Enhance, and Empower the Mind Audiobook Download
[Audio Books] The Future of the Mind: The Scientific Quest to Understand, Enhance, and Empower the Mind Audiobook Download by Michio Kaku
NOW A #1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER
“Compelling….Kaku thinks with great breadth, and the vistas he presents us are worth the trip” —The New York Times Book Review
The New York Times best-selling author of PHYSICS OF THE IMPOSSIBLE, PHYSICS OF THE FUTURE and HYPERSPACE tackles the most fascinating and complex object in the known universe: the human brain.          For the first time in history, the secrets of the living brain are being revealed by a battery of high tech brain scans devised by physicists. Now what was once solely the province of science fiction has become a startling reality. Recording memories, telepathy, videotaping our dreams, mind control, avatars, and telekinesis are not only possible; they already exist.    THE FUTURE OF THE MIND gives us an authoritative and compelling look at the astonishing research being done in top laboratories around the world—all based on the latest advancements in neuroscience and physics.  One day we might have a 'smart pill' that can enhance our cognition; be able to upload our brain to a computer, neuron for neuron; send thoughts and emotions around the world on a 'brain-net'; control computers and robots with our mind; push the very limits of immortality; and perhaps even send our consciousness across the universe.             Dr. Kaku takes us on a grand tour of what the future might hold, giving us not only a solid sense of how the brain functions but also how these technologies will change our daily lives. He even presents a radically new way to think about 'consciousness' and applies it to provide fresh insight into mental illness, artificial intelligence and alien consciousness.
With Dr. Kaku's deep understanding of modern science and keen eye for future developments, THE FUTURE OF THE MIND is a scientific tour de force--an extraordinary, mind-boggling exploration of the frontiers of neuroscience.

The Sixth Extinction Audiobook Online
[Audio Books] The Sixth Extinction Audiobook Online by Elizabeth Kolbert
WINNER OF THE PULITZER PRIZE From the author of Field Notes from a Catastrophe, a powerful and important work about the future of the world, blending intellectual and natural history and field reporting into a compelling account of the mass extinction unfolding before our eyes.
Over the last half a billion years, there have been five mass extinctions, when the diversity of life on earth suddenly and dramatically contracted. Scientists around the world are currently monitoring the sixth extinction, predicted to be the most devastating extinction event since the asteroid impact that wiped out the dinosaurs. This time around, the cataclysm is us. The Sixth Extinction draws on the work of scores of researchers in half a dozen disciplines–geologists who study deep ocean cores, botanists who follow the tree line as it climbs up the Andes, and marine biologists who dive off the Great Barrier Reef. Elizabeth Kolbert, two-time winner of the National Magazine Award and New Yorker writer, accompanies many of these researchers into the field, and introduces you to a dozen species–some already gone, others facing extinction–that are being affected by the sixth extinction. Through these stories, Kolbert provides a moving account of the disappearances occurring all around us and traces the evolution of extinction as concept, from its first articulation by Georges Cuvier in revolutionary Paris up through the present day. The sixth extinction is likely to be mankind's most lasting legacy; as Kolbert observes, it compels us to rethink the fundamental question of what it means to be human.

Eric Rayburn
First two chapters are a history of fossils that I have little interest in. Bought the book to learn about the extinctions that we know of. I don't really care what 18th and 19th century naturalists thought about the early mammoth fossils. Narrator is good, but it moves too slow.

Excellent book. Describes how humans are destroying biological diversity in about 12 chapters, each focusing on a type of animal, connected with a wider theme. Highly recommended to people who think about where the world is going and what might be done about it.

We Have Always Lived in the Castle Audiobook Download
[Audio Books] We Have Always Lived in the Castle Audiobook Download by Shirley Jackson
Shirley Jackson’s deliciously unsettling novel about a perverse, isolated, and possibly murderous family takes readers deep into a labyrinth of dark neurosis, macabre humor, and gothic atmosphere. Six years after four family members died suspiciously of arsenic poisoning, the three remaining Blackwoods—elder, agoraphobic sister Constance; wheelchair-bound Uncle Julian; and eighteen-year-old Mary Katherine, or, Merricat—live together in pleasant isolation. Merricat has developed an idiosyncratic system of rules and protective magic to guard the estate against intrusions from hostile villagers. But one day a stranger arrives—cousin Charles, with his eye on the Blackwood fortune—and manages to penetrate into their carefully shielded lives. Unable to drive him away by either polite or occult means, Merricat adopts more desperate methods, resulting in crisis, tragedy, and the revelation of a terrible secret. Jackson’s novel emerges less as a study in eccentricity and more—like some of her other fictions—as a powerful critique of the anxious, ruthless processes involved in the maintenance of normalcy itself.

The book was not haunting or mysterious but actually quite boring. You finish the book with more questions than answers. Not a satisfying read, with a lacklustre conclusion

hauntingly good book. I highly recommended if you want to short and haunting read but nothing disturbing

Rather slow, but creepy. There is a scene not of horror but of terror about half-way through. Well-written (well, it's Shirley Jackson). The reader is excellent.

I loved the tone of this book and the very odd characters. I did a combo of reading and listening and I do think the narration adds a bit of color and realism to the characters. Do not read the forward as it gives away some details you may not want to know. The book itself has a great quirky tone. It is a bit creepy, but I don't think it is scary. The end was a bit anticlimactic for me, but I think it was worth reading. It's a fast read/listen.

When I was looking for a "scary" book to listen to on the internet this book kept popping up, so I excitedly added it. I had high expectation but ended up being very disappointed! The book reads very slowly, and spends too much time rambling on and on about details that have no bearing on the story. The story is told in the form of a lot of nonsensical ramblings from a mentally unhinged protagonist. I really wish I didn't waste my credit on this!

The Boys in the Boat (Young Readers Adaptation): The True Story of an American Team's Epic Journey to Win Gold at the 1936 Olympics Audiobook
[Book] The Boys in the Boat (Young Readers Adaptation): The True Story of an American Team's Epic Journey to Win Gold at the 1936 Olympics Audiobook by Daniel James Brown
The #1 New York Times bestseller about the Greatest Generation freshly adapted for the next generation.   For readers of Unbroken, out of the depths of the Great Depression comes the astonishing tale of nine working-class boys from the American West who at the 1936 Olympics showed the world what true grit really meant. With rowers who were the sons of loggers, shipyard workers, and farmers, the University of Washington’s eight-oar crew was never expected to defeat the elite East Coast teams, yet they did, going on to shock the world by challenging the German boat rowing for Adolf Hitler.   At the center of the tale is Joe Rantz, a teenager without family or prospects, whose personal quest captures the spirit of his generation—the generation that would prove in the coming years that the Nazis could not prevail over American determination and optimism.   This deeply emotional yet easily accessible young readers adaptation of the award-winning #1 New York Times bestseller features never-before-seen photographs, highly visual back matter, and an exclusive new introduction.

I bought this for my 10-year-old son thinking it would be fine for him. It has filthy language (swearing) and is unfit for a child or younger person to listen to.

My daughter loved it! The only thing, it’s that it skipped some parts, she was following along reading the hardcover.

I pick my nine year old granddaughter up from school every day. We both like to listen to audiobooks on the 30 minute drive home. Many times because of her age and the age appropriate content of the book that we are listening to I want to jump out of the car for some relief LOL. Although there were things in Cheaper that she didn't understand because of the era of the story, it gave us lots to discuss. A delightful book for both of us.

What fun! Makes me wish I had 11 siblings. The narration was great also. I do wish the few cuss words had been left out. They "cheapen" the story.
