A lot of people romanticize Ellen and Orlock's relationship, and half of the time it's like nobody has watched the movie

I haven't seen the 2024 version, but I have seen the 1922 version - and even though it's a silent film, I heard the message clear as day that Orlock and Ellen are very clearly not a 'forbidden love' story that I see a lot of people comparing them to

Ellen was clearly tortured and abused by Orlock, and if you see that as a love story, I think you need to get yourself sorted out tbh

My thoughts on Nosferatu (2024) and Bram Stokers Dracula (1992) as a 15-year-old girl with too many opinions !!!

SPOILERS AHEAD!

Dracula is seen in many different lights. Bram Stoker’s Dracula (1992) portrays Dracula in a more romantic way. When he sees Mina in Jonathan's locket, he sees her as his wife who killed herself over the “death” of her husband. After trapping Mina’s husband, Dracula goes to search for her in a busy town, showing her a different way of love, and essentially coaxing and corrupting her to be with him instead of her former lover/fiancé/husband. Nosferatu (1922) (2024) shows Orlock in a way that brings more horror. Nosferatu (1922) follows the steps of Bram Stoker where Orlock sees a photo of Ellen and is obsessed. The difference in the 1922 version is he’s more entranced by her body as when he first sees her in Thomas’s locket, he compliments her neck. This makes him prey on her.

Now, this is why the 2024 Nosferatu adaptation is the most accurate, disturbing, and most of all perfect version of the “Dracula”. Ellen comes from a dysfunctional family and grows up suffering in her loneliness. She prays and calls for someone, something to save her from the darkness that is her life. That’s when Orlock comes to her. Ellen is 15, Orlocks age is not specified but when Herr Knock is telling Thomas about Orlock he states that Orlock is at the end of the line in life. Ellen describes the love she was given by him when she was younger as sweet but quickly became torture, giving her countless nightmares. When she met Thomas, his peace and genuine intent made the horrors go away. He is the love of her life. She dreads when Thomas has to leave, Thomas leaving is unfortunately what brought Orlock back to her. He carries a lock of her hair in a heart locket which Orlock steals and holds firmly in his palm while sniffing it (creep). Much like Bram Stoker, Orlock attempts trapping Thomas by sending wolves after him and delaying signing the government papers needed for him to move which makes Thomas jump out a window and into a river, which he survives. Back at home, Ellen is having nightmares again. Even more so as she’s having them when she’s awake. Though Thomas is severely injured, he gets on a horse as soon as possible and strives to go see Ellen as he realizes he’s just experienced the horrors she’s described. Thomas describes his encounter with Orlock as meeting the devil. Ellen wants the comfort of Thomas desperately but pushes him away. Ellen tells him how she’s met Orlock and how he has made her “unclean”. This is reference to her childhood when Orlock took advantage of her, this could also be reference to rape. Thomas instead cradles her in his arms, reassures her that he is not scared of her or shaken by the things she says, and that he loves her. Nosferatu (2024) has romantic elements but is mainly overpowered by the horror elements and Orlocks' looming presence.
