it’s probably inevitable mission creep from the increasingly transactional nature of the internet and fandom-as-consumerism, which was always gonna happen after corps worked out how much bank there is to make from those weirdo fan people

Talking to absolutely nobody rn but the existence of crosses in genshin has always bothered me. Not from a religious standpoint but a logical one. Wtf do you mean Barbara wears crosses and some of the graves are crosses?? This would be normal in any other context but the genshin universe canonically has a different religious system and lore than our world’s. The existence and religious use of crosses implies there was some Jesus like figure in Teyvat mythology but there is NOTHING in the lore to offer an explanation. It’s bothered me for years and I know I’m never gonna get an explanation but the lore implications are WILD😭

It’s been a while lol. Not much to post as I’m working on another comic but here’s my Jean and Barbara designs. I don’t draw them as much as I should 💔

I’ll just leave my thoughts and explanations below 👍

Main point

-I designed these two to be each other’s compliment. While I tried to make sure they both have their own separate identities and shape language, I did want them to be visually associated with one another, which is why they have such similar color palettes, as opposed to the ragbros, who are always going to be in very stark contrast with one another.

Jean

- The biggest change here is that I swapped out her sword for a lance and shield. I did this so that:

A) She has more of a distinction from Barbara. If her younger sister focuses on healing injuries after they occur, I think it would be interesting if Jean’s priorities shift to preventing injuries before they happen. (Something along the lines of this is mentioned in her character stories I believe)

B) She becomes a good mid point between the rest of the Mond trio. I think as well as a lance being a nice medial area between Kaeya’s sword and Diluc’s claymore, a lance is something unique to her, not just another sword.

-Her hat is not a nun’s veil (though it is mistaken for one by outsiders). It’s cerimonial headwear used during knighting that she wears all the time for reasons that I will have to explain in another post lol (what’s important to know for context is that it has to do with a beauty standard in Mondstadt). It does do a bit of storytelling for her though. If you look closely, you will notice that her cape actually has a very flashy, defined collar that really gives her that “lion-like” look, but the hat she always wears obscures it. “Her unparalleled sense of responsibility is the sole reason why she still hasn't found her true calling.”

- I think the strongest elements of Jean’s OG design are those long, straight lines. Very representative of her steadfast nature, as well as her very strict, rigorous upbringing. I tried to make sure her design was littered with as much parallel and perpendicular lines as possible. That belt though…it’s kind of askew. There’s just that little bit of tension there. Perhaps this is how those small, inner doubts manifest? Those parts of her life she feels to afraid or awkward to take charge of? This is in reference to her relationship with her sister, of course, but it can work with many aspects of her life.

-least important point is I did preserve her diamond pattern on her pants, just in the form of her greaves.

Barbara

-Big overhaul here. Shape wise I made sure to keep lots of round, soft shapes there. She’s a very sweet girl. Her veil is designed such that most of her hair is covered, but the overall shape that cascades down the sides of her face is still a bit reminiscent of her original twin tails. The design is meant to resemble that of a lion’s mane. Both in reference to her extremely driven personality and to her desire to be like her sister.

-Her character does take a bit of a shift, but it isn’t large. I tried to emphasize both her roles as a deaconess and healer within the church and her role as an idol. I write her as an aspiring surgeon who struggles just a bit with her duties to heal not only people’s bodies but also their souls. To represent this, shes hand embroidered half of her habit, while the rest remains plain, only covered by her large bag filled with study materials and textbooks borrowed from Lisa.

-Her habit is also just a bit big on her. Are all these responsibilities and aspirations getting to be too much? Maybe, but Barbara is a determined girl. She pins up her bulky sleeves, ties her too-long pants to her ankles, and gets to work. There’s people out there that need her.
