Apparently, back in the day, there was a really notorious tie in novel for Star Trek that had a lot of slash elements called Killing Time
The slash elements were requested to be removed by Paramount, and they were, BUT due to a mistake, the original was sent to print without the edits
When it was caught, they’d printed 250k of this “first edition” which subsequently became collectors items for Kirk/Spock fans, since later editions DID include the edits censoring the slash
NOW, I bring this up because my friend who’s into the original Star Trek found and was reading the first edition at the desk at the library we work at, cause we’re slow on weekends and we’re the only ones here. She laughs at it, so I ask and she tells me about the general backstory of the book, and that she laughed because (among other things) Kirk, who doesn’t get mad in the og series really, was being described as hot headed and apparently just getting into fights left and right
So I’m looking over her shoulder at the scene, commenting on the character changes that resemble modern fic-degradation of characterization for the sake of a shipping dynamic, when I realize something
Now, my only interaction with the Star Trek series directly was the 2009 reboot, and my friends hasn’t seen those and is only interested in the originals. As I’m looking at this scene, and my friend is pointing out the character changes to Kirk, I realize that this is the fucking premise of the reboot, down to the fucking alternative timeline shenanigans, the rank swap, and Kirk being a hotheaded fuck up
The 2009 film was literally based on this slash fiction misprint they tried to bury!
Im reeling.
I can’t be the only one who made this connection.
So I google to see if anyone else has, and oh yes, good, there was someone
The fucking author of Killing Time
…I feel like I’ve uncovered a conspiracy. I’ve still got 3 hours left in my shift and I can’t focus. The world must know.

Y'all ever think about how Spiritomb isnt just bound to any old rock, but to a keystone specifically? For those who don't know, keystones are specific stones used in the tops of stone arches, like in bridges or doorways or such. This is backed up by Spiritomb originally being found in the ruins of a tower in Sinnoh.
This means it was tradition to specifically seal Spiritomb in archways. If I remember my architecture right, keystones had to be inserted last, as the two sides of the arch push on it in order to keep it in place. Whoever bound Spiritomb in the past saw fit to specifically build these villainous souls into structures, into the most pivotal part of a structure. Was it to keep them contained, so as long as the building stood, they'd be imprisoned? Was it punishment, always putting pressure on them? Atonement, so the evil could do some good in the world by helping the living? Or were they harnessed as wards, the souls of the damned harnessed to scare off other foul beasts or demons?
I dont know. What I do know is that Spiritomb is bloody awesome.
(And note: wasnt there a Spiritomb in Almia that could move throughout a ruin, sprouting from the floor rather than a stone? Can a Spiritomb be bound to the entire structure its keystone is used in creating?)

That the Ancient City portal doesn't lead anywhere. It never did. It was a failed attempt to make an End/Void Portal in ancient times, with the Sculk merely being the backfire of void magicks from the failed attempt mixed with the souls of the inhabitants.

it's been over a year since dawntrail came out at this point. there is NO reason for me to still be seeing 'wuk lamat didn't substantially grow as a character' takes after all this time when it's so blatantly not true.
do you all remember in the bahamut coil raids when alisaie's character growth is affirmed by her no longer just parroting her grandfather's views because they were her grandfather's and she loved him, but because she had finally taken those views as her own and believed them fully with her own heart? that's also wuk lamat's main point of growth.
there's a reason why wuk lamat doesn't have the strength to stand up to bakool ja ja until after she has that talk with you at your cabin before setting out for yak'tel. in the beginning, when we're talking to her in sharlayan, we are quite explicitly told that she's not participating in the rite because she's got what it takes to be a ruler. she is doing it solely because she knows zoraal ja needs to be stopped or there will be disastrous consequences. but at that point she's still doing it to preserve her father's tural--she has no reference point for what the kingdom is really like outside tuliyollal, even if she thinks she does because of her father's stories.
it is only by undertaking the rite and learning first hand about all the people who live in tural that her love for them truly becomes her own. before that, she was merely reflecting her father's love. this helps her to level up and mature her worldview, to help her Truly Understand what she's really fighting for and why she wants it, and it is this realization, which she discusses with you before leaving for yak'tel, which enables her to finally tap into dynamis and repeatedly limit break bakool ja ja straight to hell.
and that's not the end of her growth! when she comes with you to the dome and encounters sphene, she is faced with a person who holds all the same values she's just spent the first half of the expac developing, but who has nonetheless taken them to a horrifying and dark extreme. she is her mirror and her foil, forcing her to contend with the fact that her newfound resolve based on her reborn worldview will not be enough to make her a good ruler. it will not be enough to preserve her precious peace.
this brings us to a second important way in which she grew: in the beginning, she actually had one of the same weaknesses as zoraal ja--thinking that strength was doing everything on your own. hence why she (extremely badly) pretended she didn't struggle with seasickness, as one example. but your group taught her the value of relying on others when you need help, and that allowing yourself to be vulnerable and show others your limitations wasn't actually weakness. this was probably a motivating factor in offering joint rule with koana, but was also assuredly the key factor that differentiated her from sphene in the end--sphene refused to share the burden and plowed ahead on her own (albeit because her programming compelled her to), whereas wuk lamat had friends and allies she could turn to who could steer her right.
so yes. she did change and grow. this was all information i gleaned about her character arc while i was still playing it through for the first time, so it's particularly disturbing that after this long so many people are not grasping any of it.

She started as a self-taught Conjurer, so she could heal her dying mother. She tried to cast Raise using her own aether and almost killed herself, but got saved by the spirit of A-Towa-Cant, who forcefully forced ambient aether through her. It set her down the path of the White Mage, and because of her being A-Towa's disciple, she was chosen by the Elementals to be an... Experiment, to replace A-Towa. She was chosen to be a Padjal, unusual both because she was a teenager, and only half-Midlander.
Being a White Mage isn't her true calling, though. After being injured in the attack on the Waking Sands, she stayed with Cid on the sidelines during the Coerthan portion of ARR, who taught her basic engineering while they were idle. It was simple, but enough to spark an interest. During the Crystal Tower raids, Cid got Vira to help Jessie Jaye around the Ironworks while he helped the WoLs, where she expressed a natural talent for engineering
That being said, it wasnt until HW when she really got into it. Basically all her free time in Ishgard was spent at Skysteel, learning to be both an engineer and a Machinist! Over the years since, she's put off all of her supposed duties as a Padjal to focus on her engineering, and such is terrified of returning to the Twelveswood, lest she incur the Greenwrath.

I really hope that Legends Z-A remembers that Emma was the boss of the Lumiose Gang and that she had that position forced on her because she kicked all their asses in a fight well before the X and Y postgame happened.
Without Pokémon. She didn't own any Pokémon until Xerosic gave her his Crobat and Malamar.
So this scrawny malnourished 16 year old beat the shit out of three people with her bare hands. And she presumably hasn't lost that ability to beat the shit out of someone as an adult.
If anything she's gotten stronger because now she has a superpowered suit that enhances her physical abilities.
AND now she's apparently a really really good Trainer as well?
Listen, all I'm saying is that Emma could absolutely solo whatever threat is going to strike Lumiose City and the only reason she isn't going to is because we're the protagonists. I'd like some fanart of her punching the main bad guy through a wall in a few months please.
