09.06 Heaven Can’t Wait (Part 2 of ?)
Previously
As Kevin and Sam get to work, Dean gets a phone call.
Before we move on, I’d like you to consider this:
Dean picks up the phone. With no preamble, Cas says, “I may have a case for you.”
I love every single thing about Dean’s body language in this scene. The side-eye he gives Sam when he realizes Cas is on the phone. The way he jerks to attention when Cas describes the case. The way he walks away from the table to get some privacy. The way he
I also love how Cas brushes off Dean’s question about how he is with a curt, “I…am…busy” as he fiddles with the Big O Slush machine. Say hello to the Big O Slush machine kids.
I don’t want to make too much of the fact that the Big O Slush machine ejaculates all over Cas as soon as Dean suggests they meet up, but I will just say, “Same, slush machine, same.”
Don’t worry about those sounds, Dean. Cas is just having some trouble with a Big O.
And then Cas hangs up because he basically doesn’t understand phone sex at all.
Dean decides to go see Cas and figure out what is going on without Gadreel!Sam knowing about it. Which also means Sam!Sam can’t know, but Sam!Sam looks like he wants to punch Dean in the face for ignoring Cas.
Awww, look...
I’m afraid this is as close as I’m ever going to get to a picture of Bob with Jensen, so I take what I can get.
Wait, what was I talking about?
Ok, so Dean uses his flimsy excuse to get out of the bunker and check on Cas, even letting Kevin accuse him of ditching on research.
Back at the Gas-n-Sip, Cas is hanging out doing human junk.
We discover Cas has been covertly living in the Gas-n-Sip and that he’s a terrible liar
Nora doesn’t seem at all skeptical, but ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Nora reiterates what an awesome, special guy Steve is, and then asks if he’s free the next night.
He’s so confused.
And proud.
And now don’t we have just a peachy little set up for Dean to drop in on.
Next Up: The ex is in town

09.06 Heaven Can’t Wait (Part 1 of ?)
Today’s episode is way out of order. In honor of tonight’s episode of Supernatural, written by the inestimable Robert Berens and for which I am ridiculously excited, I am doing one of my favorite episodes of Season 9. However, since it is out of order, the post will be under a cut.
Brief Season 9 background:
After opening “The Road So Far” with Who Do You Love? (Are you kidding me with this, show?) we begin an exceptionaly painful season. Dean is on the brink of a nervous breakdown with neither Sam nor Cas to help him figure out what to do. Sam is dying. Cas is human and separated from the boys with no resources of his own. Dean lets an angel possess Sam under dubious circumstances, Cas very briefly dies, but then comes home to the bunker for, like, 5 minutes before Dean has to kick him out for very sketchy angel reasons. It is literally the worst thing ever (except for every other worst thing Supernatural has done). So, Cas is living on his own, not really in touch with the boys, Dean is wallowing in guilt for lying to his brother and also kicking Cas out, and Sam...Sam is wandering around like everything is fine which is somehow worse.
While this episode is painful in its own way, I feel like it was sort of the last good stop on Dean’s (terrible, horrible, no good, very bad) downward Season 9 spiral.
We open with a man on the phone with a suicide hotline. He struggles, but ultimately decides not to kill himself, HOWEVER, a man arrives, summoned by our suicide risk. As you might imagine, he is not there to bring him pizza.
While I don’t think I can actually pick a ‘favorite’ Cas, because that would be like picking my favorite husband (I mean, wait, what?), I do love Steve!Cas a little bit more. For reasons.
Anyway, as you can see, Cas has assumed the name Steve and is working in a Gas-n-Sip like the resourceful, resilient, hottie he is.
Steve!Cas’ boss, Nora, arrives to assure us that Cas is doing well in his job, and that, even while stocking shelves and making coffee, he stands out as something special.
Look at that sweet face, so happy at being called a good convenience store employee, and by extension a good human. Ugh. IT IS TOO MUCH.
Alas, something pops up to shatter this hard-won normalcy.
Meanwhile, back at the bunker…
KEEEEEEEEEVIIIIIIINNNNNNNNNNN
Kevin is working on translating the angel tablet in some sort of crazy ass convoluted way. He doesn’t have much to go on except one phrase in the footnotes, “falling angels.” Which gets Dean’s attention.
Sam suggests they work on the footnotes.
Dean gives his book the side-eye.
(I just really love his face, ok?)
Dean: How many volumes are there? Kevin: 24.
Up Next: Cas to the Rescue?

02.01 In My Time of Dying (Part 12/12)
Previously
Sam stands by Dean's bedside and begs him to hang on.
Meanwhile, Dean is busy trying to talk Tessa out of reaping him.
Tessa tells him the fight is over.
Tessa: Dean, you're not the first soldier I've plucked from the field. They all feel the same. They can't leave. Victory hangs in the balance. But they're wrong. The battle goes on without them.
Tessa lays down some truth the boys have still not exactly accepted 10 seasons later...
Tessa: Maybe he will, maybe he won't. Nothing you can do about it.
She tries to convince him it's an honorable death.
Dean: I think I'll pass on the seventy two virgins, thanks.
(I know this is just a funny throw away line on some level, but I *really* love that what Dean gets out of his hookups is mutual enjoyment, not conquest)
Tessa: That's funny.
(In which Tessa is me)
Dean still refuses and Tessa begins to paint a frightening picture of what will happen if he stays.
(Reason number 234,997 why Jensen Ackles is my favorite)
Tessa: How do you think angry spirits are born? They can't let go and they can't move on. And you're about to become one. The same thing you hunt.
Cut to John making deals with devils as those Winchesters become want to do.
John offers the colt in return for saving Dean, but the demon wants something else...yada yada.
Tessa is close to convincing Dean to let her take him to the great unknown.
Tessa tries to get a good look at that sexy back before he sloughs off this mortal coil.
Tessa: What's it going to be?
But then...
Tessa tells him she's not doing it...
(Sidenote: I 'accidentally' made this:
and I am sore ashamed)
The doctor marvels at Dean's recovery.
Dean tells Sam he doesn't remember anything from his coma, but he has a bad feeling something is wrong.
Cue John.
Dean: Fine, I guess. I'm alive.
Is it, John? Is it?
Sam gets ready to bitch John out for disappearing.
John tells him he had things to take care of.
Dean's awake 5 minutes and already peacekeepin'.
Sam tries to escalate the fight, but John is unexpectedly tender.
(ya think?)
John: But I've always done the best I could.
(I'm sorry about your shit skills, then)
Sam recognizes something is very wrong with John.
John takes advantage of Sam's sudden softening by sending him for coffee.
Uh...and now comes the part where we take my heart, throw it on the ground and stomp on it as much as possible.
Dean knows John sent Sam away (because they're always protecting Sammy, right?)
John: You know, when you were a kid, I'd come home from a hunt, and after what I'd seen, I'd be, I'd be wrecked. And you, you'd come up to me and you, you'd put your hand on my shoulder and you'd look me in the eye and you'd... You'd say "It's okay, Dad"
John: You shouldn't have had to say that to me, I should have been saying that to you. You know, I put, I put too much on your shoulders, I made you grow up too fast.
John: You did that, and you didn't complain, not once. I just want you to know that
Dean is, naturally, skeptical.
Which probably breaks my heart most of all.
He asks John why he's saying this stuff.
John only tells him to watch out for Sammy.
John tells him not to be scared, BUT THEN LEANS OVER AND WHISPERS SOMETHING SECRET IN HIS EAR.
(Yes, I made this because it looks like they are about to kiss)
And then he just leaves. He. Just. Leaves. HE.JUST.LEAVES.
John walks back to his room and puts the colt on the table. He looks at someone and says, "Ok."
Leaving poor Sammy to return with the coffee...
The last thing we see are the doctors working on John's lifeless body.
This is Dean's face as they call the time of John's death.
:-(

02.01 In My Time of Dying (Part 11/?)
Previously
When Sam goes looking for John he finds
Well, seems like John is up to something sketchy. It becomes even more sketchy when he starts drawing in chalk on the floor.
Sam returns to Dean's bedside with news that John is gone and the journal.
Sam finds the pages about Reapers and he and Dean read it over until Dean spots something.
(gratuitous)
He finds Tessa.
Dean confronts her with the knowledge that Reapers can change human perception, and appear in any form the like,
Dean accuses her of tricking him, but she points out he flipped out when he saw her "true form."
She gently tries to convince him to come with her.
Let's find out what John's been up to.
Hint: He's doing something punk ass stupid that is going to set in motion a lot of bad future decisions for Sam and Dean.
Long story short, the Yellow Eyed Demon appears and instead of killing him he says,
So. Yep. That can't possibly be a bad idea.

02.01 In My Time of Dying (Part 10/?)
Previously
What's in the bag, Sammy?
Sam: ...well, there's one way we can talk.
Sam brought a Ouija board.
I love how he's worried spirit!Dean is going to make fun of him.
And he is correct...
What does Dean have against slumber parties that he must constantly malign them?
Hand porn.
He just has such a very pretty face.
When it starts to work Sam gets so excited.
FYI, this not the kind of foreshadowing I appreciate.
Through the medium of the board, Dean tells Sam there is a reaper after him. Sam worries that because it is there naturally there is no way to stop it. He gets up and leaves the room saying, "There's gotta be a way. Dad'll know what to do."

02.01 In My Time of Dying (Part 9/?)
Previously
Sweet Sam knows something is up.
Sam: Like he was there. Just outta eyeshot or something.
He asks John if he thinks it's possible Dean's spirit is around and John says anything is possible. Sam says he needs to get some stuff and John actually tells Sam he wont hunt the demon until they know Dean is ok. (John not being an asshole? Interesting.)
We switch back to Dean and Tessa. Dean comments that he's impressed at how well she's taking the news. She gives him a speech about how "whatever's gonna happen's gonna happen" and about "fate" and Dean has a very Dean reaction.
Dean: You always have a choice. You can either roll over and die or you can keep fighting...
But Dean is distracted from his speech by a code blue. He runs down the hall...
You're welcome.
He finds a room where the doctors are frantically working on a child and the specter is looming over her. He tries to save her, but though the specter disappears, the girl dies anyway.
After they call the time of death one of the hospital staff says, "At least she's not suffering any more."
Poor, Dean, he doesn't seem to know what to make of that.
Next Up: Sammy takes matters into his own hands.
Short but sweet while I try to get back on the horse.

hey! i'm not sure, but i think your 02.01 'in my time of dying' is broken. it sort of ends at the bottom rather suddenly, and i haven't seen the episode yet, so i don't know if it ends there, but i doubt that it would, but (sorry i'm really awkward and i have no clue what to say next without sounding bossy) yeah, you might want to check that out
Hi! Thanks for the note. The actual problem is that I haven't had time to finish 02.01 (sadface), so it ends after part 8. I really need to figure out a schedule and stick to it! Sorry.

02.01 In My Time of Dying (Part 8/?)
Previously
In our last installment, we say Dean almost die, but he managed to deflect the spirit like apparition and keep his body alive. Dean then spoke to Sam, who looked around as if he could sense something there.
Dean takes off looking for the spirit.
As he wanders the halls, he hears a woman's voice.
He finds a young woman wandering the halls yelling, but no one notices her. He calls out to her.
Both are relieved to find someone who can see them. She tells Dean her name is Tessa and then asks if she's dead.
At the door to Tessa's room they look in at her body on life support. Tessa is confused and tells Dean she just came in for an appendectomy.
Tessa insists it all must be a dream,
but Dean says they are having an out of body experience.
Dean explains that he thinks they are spirits of people close to death.
Dean: Not if we hold on.
Ugh. Sweet, sweet innocent Dean.
Next Up: Sam talks to John about what he felt.

Hello this is Geoff. My son Jack is being sucked down the Supernatural vortex (is currently on S1E21 where he showed me some girl slashing a priest's throat for realz) and I just thought I should tell you because Nicky he might start reading your blog.
This is literally the best thing I've heard all day. I assume it's ok if I keep cursing?

I am also getting slightly obsessed with gifs. It's like portable SPN for your phone where you can play out the scene in your head, right? I'm so happy I found this blog. You are amazing!!

02.01 In My Time of Dying (Part 7/?)
Previously
Sam and John hear the sounds of an emergency, so Sam goes to check Dean's room, where he sees a team trying to resuscitate Dean.
Dean sees the same spirit hovering around his body that he saw over the woman dying earlier.
The doctors continue to work on Dean to no effect.
Dean shouts at the spirit and Sam looks around like he knows something weird might be happening. Dean decides to attack the spirit.
That seems to distract the spirit enough that it leaves its space over Dean's body. The doctors finally get a pulse back.
Dean follows the spirit into the hall, but it's gone.
Back in the room, Sam breathes a sigh of relief.
Dean seems sure he can kill whatever the spirit is before it kills him.
Next Up: TESSA!
