books i read in 2024: the city in glass by nghi vo
no one loves a city like one born to it, and no one loves a city like an immigrant. no one loves a city like they do when they are young, and no one loves a city like they do when they are old. the people loved the city of Azril in more ways than could be counted. Vitrine loved her city like demons and cats may love things, with an eye towards ownership and the threat of small mayhem.

books I’ve read in 2025 📖 no. 017
The City in Glass by Nghi Vo
“She would love him, and more than she had thought she would, but that was the way of loving most things. You couldn’t portion love out in spoons or cups or slices. You could only let it grow and nurture it if you could, cut it down if you had to.”

it’s so funny when people online act like women reading trashy romance novels is like. a new phenomenon and a sign of the downfall of society bc this has never been a thing before. this has been an extremely popular genre of book for ages. the only difference now is that they’re written by women who wanted to fuck kylo ren. which i guess is annoying. out of every man in star wars like be so serious. they had harrison ford in those movies

Just saw a sticker for sale that said “I’d rather be decomposing in a bog with Hozier” and I’m irrationally annoyed; the notable aspect of the bog bodies he wrote a song about is that they were preserved by the acidity of a peat bog and became leathery instead of decomposing. The materials don’t break down like usual in the environment of a bog which allows for the unusual preservation of skin, hair, and clothing. Fake bog fans everywhere these days!

The problem about writing an immortal character who is very, very old and having minored in history is that I can get REALLY in the weeds about what his opinion on historical events is

Noodling around on a YA fantasy retelling of Kate Crackernuts because it’s been one of my favorite fairytales since I was a kid and a while back I decided that for this version of the story I didn’t want there to be a romance between Kate and the prince because I would like more YA books in which a guy and a girl are friends. Which then made me think about how you can introduce tension and development to a relationship that isn’t going to become romantic because there’s an easy arc to follow if you’re developing a romance that lends itself to tension (the will they-won’t they, when characters will realize their feelings, how a confession will occur, what the reaction will be) and I wanted to figure out how to translate this feeling of tension into the development of a platonic relationship. Anyway, I think I’ve figured out something interesting to introduce to the story to create more tension which is pleasing 👍
