New Ask Taqman Video: Finding Your Sensitive Side in Real-time PCR

Researchers who study liver disease in hippopotamus should count themselves fortunate; they never run low on RNA for their gene expression studies. But what about those who work on micro-dissected mouse tumor samples, even single cells? Or who work on limited cell-sorted fractions? Or researchers like Andre of the Barretos Cancer Hospital, who shared the following concern: “I'm studying a mutation in a specific gene that’s being transcribed at extremely low levels in human cells. What can I do to improve qPCR reaction sensitivity of my real-time assay?” Watch a video reply to his question... Watch Video

New Novex Tips and Tricks Videos for Immunoassays: Antibody Pairs, ELISA and Multiplex Kits

Life Technologies has just released the new videos below for our Novex® customers to help with using immunoassays including quick tutorials about antibody pairs, ELISA and multiplex kits.
1. Learn how to use Novex® antibody pairs to set up an ELISA.
2. Learn all about running an ELISA to measure proteins that you are trying to detect in serum, plasma, supernatant, lysates, and other sample types. The ELISA is a widely- accepted method for measuring protein amounts and is often used in conjunction with the western blot to analyze proteins in research samples.
3. Learn how to troubleshoot a multiplex immunoassay to keep your plates clog-free and keep the MAGPIX® instrument in great condition.
4. Learn how to measure multiple proteins simultaneously using the Novex® multiplex bead-based kit on the Luminex® instrument platform. Watch the Videos...

If a Researcher Tweets, will Anyone Listen?

As people are discovering new reasons to share personal or professional content, social media is quickly becoming a fast and easy method of communication and a powerful research tool.
In April, Melissa Terras caught our attention with her blog post, “The verdict: is blogging or tweeting about research papers worth it?,”sharing her experiences in taking all of her academic research and disseminating it via social media. We caught up with Melissa to learn what motivated her to use social media and what advice she would give to other researchers. Read More...

Free Webinar - RNA-Seq: Methods, Tools, and Pipelines

In recent years, high-resolution measurements of transcriptional activity and organization have been made possible through massively parallel RNA sequencing (RNA-Seq) technologies. Analysis of the vast data files produced requires both computational infrastructure and bioinformatics expertise, and can introduce bottlenecks. In the webinar "Ion Torrent™ RNA-Seq: methods, tools, and pipelines," Life Technologies scientist Jeoffrey Schageman will discuss... Read more or Register for this Webinar

Should You Dilute cDNA for Real-time PCR?
1:5 dilution? 1:3? 1:10? Or is diluting cDNA for Real-time PCR a waste of time, effort and perfectly good H2O? In this video, Life Technologies Sr. Field Application Specialist Doug Rains examines whether or not qPCR end-users doing gene expression should dilute cDNA prior to running samples. Read More...

Celebrating Harrison: Genetic Sequencing Identifies Cause of Rare Disorder, Provides Comfort to Parents
My third son, Harrison Harkins, lived only a brief nine months on this earth, but he has left a legacy that my family and I hope will help others afflicted with a rare and sometimes unknown disease. This is our way of continuing to celebrate Harrison as he may have had a weak body but his spirit was so strong.
From the beginning, we knew that Harrison was not a typical, healthy baby. Immediately after birth, he was moved to the NICU, starting a wave of anxiety and fear that never seemed to end. When we left the NICU to take Harrison home at 3 weeks, the attending physician provided a grave warning, “things will only get worse from here.” As parents, we were determined to improve Harrison’s quality of life and we wanted to prove that physician wrong. Harrison was small at birth and had what is called “failure to thrive.” Read more...

President Barack Obama Reminds the Nation that Biotechnology is the Most Crucial Science of the 21st Century

"If we want to make the best products, we also have to invest in the best ideas. Every dollar we invested to map the human genome returned $140 to our economy. Today, our scientists are mapping the human brain to unlock the answers to Alzheimer’s; developing drugs to regenerate damaged organs; devising new material to make batteries ten times more powerful. Now is not the time to gut these job-creating investments in science and innovation. Now is the time to reach a level of research and development not seen since the height of the Space Race.”
