I feel like the coffee trend is so sad if you put it into Jack Kelly’s point of view. Like hear me out.
“I met my younger self for coffee today.
He was 20 minutes early, and I was few minutes late.
I ordered an Americano, and he wanted something sweet.
He cried about Michael’s death being caused by him. I still believed it was, but I told him to not let it hold over his head.
He wondered if we ever got to go to Santa Fe somewhere where we actually belong, I told him we found somewhere better.
He asked if we were still newsies, and I told him we are and made front page news.
He was nervous, and very anxious. I was too, but I wanted to comfort him. I then insisted on paying for both orders.
I don’t think of him as often, but he wishes to become me. I hope to see him soon.”

I was thinking about history for a while last night. Irish, Italians, and the black immigrants all faced judgement, thought as the outcast, all faced socially exclusion, and etc. Which is probably the sole reason why newsies judged Jack when he scabbed, shredded his photo, and stole his money. They were use to the judgement so they thought it was normal to judge someone else. But you also have people who are like, “I faced discrimination before, so I don’t want to judge someone else, because I know it’s not a great feeling.” Which is why we have Specs which commonly known as more open minded.

Fanfic idea, don’t know when to start it though!😭
Have it after WWI, and Race and spot have just served it, but the war also caused Spot’s death. Race kept getting nightmares about the war, which caused his gambling habits to get worse.
Later on Spot went to Race’s dream, and Race started to say stuff like, “why are you here? You aren’t even real!”
But spot would be like, “just because I’m not real doesn’t mean we can’t have a nice talk.”
So later on Race slowly moved on from that pain, and accepted reality. Spot still shows up in the dreams sometimes. But what’s haunting race is he has no other way to see him except through dreams.

Just did the math, but Gatsby and Jack Kelly could have met each other in WWI before! I can totally see them and Nick being a good trio friend group! Jack would be asking Nick how the west was if they ever ended up in the same place!

When you think about letter from the refuge it’s pretty sad.
But if you think about it on the (imma air quote this) “deeper” level, imagine how Jack would feel from the original draft. He had a brother, who’s dead, but he thinks it’s his own fault.
The letter was signed as your brother, but in the original draft Crutchie never got the chance to get out of the refuge. How would Jack feel then? The thought of his brother dying because of him is haunting him already, and then he was the one who lead the strike.
So my point is, Crutchie and Jack is really close. The past is haunting him along the way, and then Crutchie sent a letter saying, “your brother-”. And this time he wasn’t able to save that brother and it will haunt him more.

This thing been bothering me…
What if after the strike even though Jack and the other newsies made up, they still have that “gap”? Think about it this way, in Jack’s pov: I grew up with all these friends, but I’ve always wanted to go to the west, but later on the prices got up, so me and my friends went on strike. We were practically family… but people got hurt, my best friend got hurt too. But this rich guy gave me money to achieve my dream, promised to lower the prices, and I won’t have to go to the place I have trauma with. So I betrayed my friends.
But then with the newsies pov: it’s like we trusted this guy, he saw us grow up and we looked up to him. But he later on betrayed us, out of hate, we took his money and ruined his photo with his family.
Later on they made up but neither of them is comfortable with actually sharing about what was going on to them.
Edit: They still think Jack did it for the money, but they will never know their true intentions.

Which artists I think newsies characters listen to on repeat
Jack Kelly: very old vibes, like not in a bad way old. like I’m talking about Elton John, Billy Joel, or Redbone.
Katherine: definitely something chill, so like Cigarettes After Sex, Laufey, or some underground artist like idk Cruncho or Lyric.(Cruncho and Lyric is actual artists, they are good!)
Davey: definitely shares some what of a same taste with Katherine. But might also listen to Jazz, more specifically Bossa nova, and Latin. But he doesn’t have a specific artist he listens to.
Crutchie: Probably listens to a musical soundtrack on repeat, or just lets the other people choose. But if he has to choose it’s probably indie. So stuff like Sufjan Stevens.
Racetrack: bro probably listens to a lot of things considered “gay,” or queer artists like Chappell Roan, Lady Gaga, or Girl in Red. But also enjoys Radiohead, or Pixies.
Spot Conlon: a lot of punk rock or metal, like Anti Flag, Black Flag, Dead Kennedys or just plays loud obnoxious songs just to piss to people off.
Elmer: probably usually don’t listen to music, and the time when he do, it’s probably being forced to watch cocomelon with Les (which probably is everyone’s inevitable fate with Les)
Albert: enjoys simple rock, or indie rock. Like AC/DC, Cage the Elephant, Pinegrove.
Les: Force everyone to watch cocomelon, or you can catch him singing to a k pop group.

I don’t mind really, do it if you want!
Hear me out
I was looking through one of the websites which I forgot which, Race had a older brother who left him. I was just thinking about I could write a story about it. Like how he got abandoned by his brother due to him wanting to pursue a career. And how he decided not to participate in the shredding Jack’s picture thing in the original draft because he knows what it’s like loosing your family, and why he’s Italian but his last name obviously not being Italian.

HEAR ME OUT
We all know our precious Spot (movie Spot specifically) has a key around his neck. I have this theory where Race likes to sculpt wood. And he can make small items like keys and all that. SO, Spot’s key was a gift from Race. But later on because of some issues like idk during strike or saving someone’s life he lost it. And he got sad, so Race was like, “stop crying over it, I’ll make you a new one…”

Y’ALL HEAR ME OUT
What if Newsies like had a series? Like it’s one of those series where you don’t gotta start on season one because each season tells a different story? Like there will be around like 10-15 seasons. Like each year, they would pick some fans head cannons so they become cannon? And it would be about a newsies life, like it starts from them becoming a newsie to what will happen after the strike. For example, a popular one is that the woman in Carrying The Banner is Spot’s mother, LIKE what happened between them?! LIKE TELL ME WHAT YOU THINK

Newsies thought
Jack Kelly in the original draft complained to Sarah how them families don’t keep their mouths shut around each other. He is sour about Davey having a family because he once had a family too. Plus, Les IS his brother’s age.

Head cannon
Jack Kelly appreciate gestures like hugs, and flowers! So if he receives flowers or gifts on his birthday, he will remember it.

How I think Race and Spot will end up after the strike.
Well first of all, once they are old enough, which technically they are, they will find better jobs. Spot later on will have enough money to get Race a promise ring. That would be like maybe 6-7 years after the strike. They decided it was best to move to Paris, since France decriminalized same sex acts in 1791.
Race has quit smoking during his time in France. But after around 9-10 years of peaceful life in France, the Great War happened. They of course fought in it, plus, U.S and France fought together. So either way they won’t get called a traitor.
Once Race and Spot reached to their 60-70s, Spot has passed before Race because of WWII. But Race didn’t have enough money for a grave. So later on, Race of course went back to Manhattan with the cheapest ticket. Manhattan itself of course has also changed. Jack still stayed in NYC, Davey became a banker or something, a few other newsies either left New York, lived a better life, or passed away in WWI.
But Race will still visit the lodge house because that’s technically one of the few place he remembers. Everyone was still slightly terrified of Spot, but not as bad as in the past. Race was always willing to share about Spot, and whenever someone brings him up, he would say, “Spot Conlon? I’ve heard of him…” and even though Illinois decriminalized same sex acts in 1962, Race was already 81 years old.
