Turmeric + Berbere Anthotype, Repear Screenprint

The Last Supper anthotype uses berbere, an Ethiopian spice blend central to Habesha cuisine, combined with turmeric (and isopropyl alcohol) for its photosensitivity to make a bright orange photosensitive emulsion. I started experimenting with anthotype printing with turmeric after I took a diy darkroom class 2 years ago in undergrad. With this technique I wanted to create a printing method that looks and smells distinctly like Ethiopian food while re-interpolating Orthodox iconography. Mounted on a repeat screen print of meskel dress patterns I scanned and digitally collaged.
