It had all happened so fast.
One moment Aliah and her mother had been boarding a remarkable starship to meet with it's captain and begin work on forming relations, yet the next, Aliah's mother had collapsed. They hadn't even so much as exited the transporter bay.
Now here she lay, quiet and deathly still. Aliah's ears twitched in a nervous fashion, her claws tightening round the foot of the bed in which her mother lay. Her knuckles would turn a pale lilac from the pressure. Grey lips were pressed into a fine line, Aliah unsure how she felt in this moment. Her relationship with her mother was ... difficult. Though, if she were to perish here, what then? What would that mean?
She hadn't noticed the strange looking man enter until he spoke. Aliah flinched, not sure if she would ever be used to such a sound. She turned her head towards him, unsure of what he needed. He appeared to have business here. Was he the doctor?
Aliah bregrudingly took a few steps back from her mother and waited, hesitant in what she should even be doing.

It was a most unusual emergency, and Bones was particularly grateful for his quick-thinking medical staff at this moment.
First contact was always dicey business, but when an important Council member from the world you were making contact with suddenly collapses while aboard your ship–well, first impressions and all that.
“I’m gonna need you to stand back, ma’am” Bones told the Tauran woman. She was standing very close to the biochamber that contained her mother and Bones needed room to work.

Pointed ears would twitch in the direction of the bay doors, Aliah alerted to the human's presence. She did not turn to face him until he addressed her directly. Only then would Aliah look down at the irritated lieutenant and cock her head to the side. Of course she were here for a reason. Why would she venture ever downward into the ship without proper reason?
Needing to set the unit down to communicate, Aliah turned to set the large package at her feet. It made a heavy thud upon contact with the floor.
Raising her clawed and purple hands, Aliah would sign. 'Contamination of spore prints - New collection needed. ' Whatever prints this division had taken, Aliah's superiors did not deem them satisfactory. She was here to return the original slides that Lieutenant Stamets and his team had sent.

She had only been onboard the Discovery for a few weeks, and already things did not seem to be going well for her.
Aliah was one of the only of her kind to leave her home planet of Tu’aran or Taurus V as the humans called it, to seek to do something more with their existence besides sit underground and be miserable. The Federation offered Aliah an escape from a lifetime of unmet expectations and standards that she finally realized were impossible to compete with. Her people’s obsession with perfection would be the end of them one day, that was certain.
It would not be hers.
Though, life in Star Fleet was proving to be equally challenging for the Tauran. Aliah could not speak Standard as well as her crewmates, and the universal translator was useless if she could talk to it. As it stood, she could hardly speak at all, not needing such archaic means of communication on her homeworld.
Venturing down into the bowels of the ship, Aliah made her way to engineering with a large, strange-looking containment unit in tow. She was stronger than humans, making carrying things as large as this child’s play for her.  Entering the bay, Aliah made her way down the stairs and stopped just short of the apparatus that powered the Discovery’s spore drive. This was the first time she had ever seen it in person. Temporarily forgetting the assignment at hand, Aliah simply stood there, awestruck, holding the disproportionately large unit to her chest.
Paul Stamets was an endlessly busy man. Most times he enjoyed it, happy to work on his projects and further perfect the spore drive, But other times, times that were becoming increasingly more common, the captain insisted he do things he simply could not accomplish without skipping both meals and breaks. Something he often did on his own without problem, but that he did not appreciate having to do on the orders of another. This was one of those times, leaving him in a worse mood than usual.
Being with his mushrooms helped somewhat, but he could only kill so much time in the cultivation bay. After all, more time wasted there would be more time he would have to spend in the lab instead of going home, which would ultimately lead to nothing but a worsening mood. This conclusion reached, he left the bay, doors sliding shut behind him as he returned to his station with a huff.
He noticed, then, that there was someone who certainly was not on his team loitering around the drive. “What are you doing?” he asked, watching the stranger with a sort of irritated confusion. “Is that for me, or do you not have anything better to do with your time?” Sure, he understood the awe the drive can inspire in an arrogant sort of way, and were he in a better mood, he would enjoy it, but he wasn’t.

TUTORIAL FOR TUMBLR WRITERS: How to Retain Formatting when Copy-Pasting your Writing from a Word Processor to a Tumblr Text Post
Hey guys! People often ask me, “Blake, what sorts of redeeming qualities do you have to offer to society?” to which I reply, “None! But I can tell you my foolproof way to retain formatting (like italicizations) when copy-pasting fanfics into the Tumblr textpost editor!”
Are you a fanfiction writer who hates having to go through your whole fic again after pasting it into Tumblr’s textpost editor, just so you can re-italicize things? Do you write long things with specific formatting that you’d like to easily transfer to Tumblr? Look no further!
In this post, I will provide detailed instructions on how to do just that. As a fanfiction writer, I discovered this technique is the best way to ensure that my italicizations, bolded texts, quotation mark directions, space-forced paragraph indents, and other formatting features of my stories will transfer over cleanly from my word processor to Tumblr. The process involves copying the rich text, using the work text editor box on the website https://archiveofourown.org/ as a rtf-html converter, and pasting the html into Tumblr. It is a clean, simple, and efficient process that I’ll outline in just 8 easy steps.
A few things to keep in mind before delving in:
Use a computer. I think it is easier to input text from a computer than it is from a phone. This tutorial details how to easily transfer text from a computer, but I’m sure you could try it out from your phone, if you think it’s possible.
DON’T WRITE LONG POSTS ON TUMBLR DIRECTLY. Please, oh please, do not make this mistake. This godforsaken website tends to crash, reload, or otherwise render itself nonfunctional at the most inopportune times. You do not want to find yourself in the tragic position of having to reconcile lost work, all because you were writing something in Tumblr’s unreliable text editor. (In fact, I’m writing this tutorial post currently on an iCloud backed-up note on my computer!)
You’ll need to have (or make) an AO3 (i.e. Archive of our Own) account in order for this technique to work. I know there are websites that’ll convert rtf files into html, but I tend to eschew internet downloads out of fear of downloading malware (which I’ve done on accident). AO3 has worked well for me.
     Alright. Here are the steps!
     1. Open your completed, ready-to-publish fanfic or work of writing. I write and edit my fanfics entirely on Google Drive (as seen below in the screenshot) but you could also do this from Word or any other word processor. For the purposes of this tutorial, I’m using the text from Chapter 1 of my Queen/Almost Famous crossover fanfic It’s All Happening (read it here!!!). You can see how I have formatted at least two lines of italicized text (my first two lines). If I were to copy-paste from Drive into Tumblr, that italitization will sadly disappear.
Tumblr media
     2. Copy all of the text to your clipboard, and open https://archiveofourown.org/ . You will want to log in to your AO3 account.
     3. On the home page of AO3, hover your cursor over “post” on the top right-hand side, and select “New Work.”
Tumblr media
     4. This will take you to the “Post New Work” page. Scroll down to the very bottom of the page, to the editor box that says “Work Text*”. Don’t paste your text yet. First, click on the button that says “Rich Text” on the right-hand side of this editor box.
Tumblr media
     5. Now that the Rich Text editor button is selected, paste your writing into the editor box. You should see that the italicizations are still intact.
Tumblr media
     6. Now, click on the button that says “HTML.” Control+A and then copy the entire HTML code onto your clipboard. You’ll see that this HTML contains coded instructions for italicizations and other formatting.
Tumblr media
     7. Next, go to https://www.tumblr.com/ in a new tab on your browser, and log in to your Tumblr blog. Click the “new post” button and select “Text.” Click on the little Settings icon at the top-right of the textpost editor. Go down to the row that says “Text Editor,” which should default to “Rich Text” but you’ll want to select the option HTML.
Tumblr media
     8. Paste the HTML code in your clipboard into the HTML text box on Tumblr. (Troubleshoot: if it didn’t work the first time, go back to AO3 and re-copy the HTML text, and try pasting onto Tumblr again.) Scroll up to the top of the Tumblr textpost editor, click again on the Settings icon at the top right, and change the Text editor back to “Rich text.”
Tumblr media
BOOM! VOILÀ! Your work of writing should now be perfectly formatted into a Tumblr textpost with minimal work and without having to go back through your writing and re-format everything!
Tumblr media
At this point, you may add my appropriate headers, any photos/GIFs you’d like to include in the text, tags for other blogs (such as in my taglist), tags, embedded links (they may have copied over but idk for sure) etc!
I hope this tutorial helped in some way/shape/form, my fellow writers! Please reblog to share this post if you found this helpful! Thank you so much ♡ —Blake ( @sweet-ladyy )

Pointed ears would perk up at how friendly Tilly was being with her. This was certainly unexpected. Aliah had predicted the ensign would simply give her directions to the cabins, but to escort her? Her smile grew larger as wasted no time in following Tilly.
Level 6? How had she become so lost in this ship? It hadn't seemed as though she traveled very far from the transport bay.. Aliah made a mental note to commit a map of the ship to memory as soon as she was able.
She nodded. 'Yes.' For a moment, the Tauran appeared to struggle. While sign language was one of the only forms of archaic communication she knew fairly well, Aliah did not fully understand signing numbers. To remedy this, she positioned her hands in front of her chest and facing each other a few inches apart. They were quickly encompassed by a purple ethereal glow and between them, light would form and bend into the shape of a number. 12, it read.

The look of recognition on the ensign's face was a welcomed change for Aliah. While much of the crew had either chosen to ignore her or genuinely could not understand her, Tilly seemed more than capable of communicating in one of the few ways Aliah could manage. She gave the ensign a smile of gratitude before continuing.
'A-L-I-A-H,' she would spell. 'Nice to meet you.' This was a phrase that always confused the Tauran, but watching the ensign sign it first was much appreciated in reminding her. 'I am new - Cannot find my quarters - Can you help me?'

The Tauran was a bit taken aback, not expecting to be approached so readily by a stranger, or a human no less. It was Aliah’s first day aboard the Discovery... her person near fresh from the academy.  Aliah lifted her hands, attempting to sign that she hadn’t meant to venture so far below. ‘Lost’, she would sign, over and over. She could not find her new quarters.

‘Alien’ did not begin to describe the creature that appeared before Aliah’s eyes, or at least not well enough.
Her pupils would slit and dilate accordingly, trying to observe as much of the creature as possible in fear that she would never again have an opportunity like this. She stood absolutely still, not sure if it was hostile, but also not wanting to frighten the creature away.
It looked nothing like the fauna of her planet. Bipedal, some sort of fascinating fusion of amphibian and reptilian perhaps, and yet also possessing hooves? At least, they appeared to be hooves... was it wearing footwear? What use could it possibly have for foot protection if it possessed hooves? Perhaps they were fragile then.. the creature itself did not look vulnerable, despite seeming alone here against a cliff face near the forest. It looked... otherworldly, exotic, even beautiful.
It was so tall... much taller than Aliah even at her full height, and its eyes were exceptionally unique compared to her own. She was surprised to see such vibrant color there. They stood out remarkably well in its deep-set sockets. They gave the creature so much emotion.
She hadn’t meant to stare. Really, Aliah should have been hiding or preparing herself for some type of battle. Though truth be told, she did not feel threatened at this moment. She was not sure why, but this creature.. this alien, it did not beg hostility for now. Perhaps it was foolishness at her part, but Aliah took a step closer. Her mission of collecting samples of dirt from the valley beyond the Great Forest forgotten, Aliah raised a clawed hand and attempted to reach out with her mind, hoping the creature would understand her.
‘..Hello.’
