Ashe, I relate to this SO MUCH. I also don't really have a book or even several books that made me fall in love with reading because even when it was picture books I loved reading, and even when it was just other people reading *to me* because I couldn't read yet, I loved reading, and just storytelling in general. It was the Warriors series and before that it was the Boxcar Children books and before that it was Junie B Jones and before that it was the Magic Castle books (I can't still quote every word of the little poem that was at the beginning of them all) and so on.
And it has also been really difficult for me to deal with losing my passion for reading in the last decade or so. That's a big part of why I'm embarking on the journey of writing this story for my childhood self, to really explore and celebrate that feeling of magic and adventure that comes with ~stories~
Important question: what is the book (or books) that made you fall in love with reading as a kid? The one(s) that opened up this whole world of wonder and adventure?
(I'm currently working on a story that honors the types of stories that ran away with me when I was younger, and I would love to get some more inspiration by checking out and/or being reminded of everyone else's childhood faves)

I've been reading a bunch of horror books lately, mostly haunted house books, and it's always funny to me when the characters get freaked out when a floorboard creaks in the middle of the night or they think they see movement in the corner of their eye but nothing is there, because as someone who grew up in an old country house and had that kind of thing happen all the time, I would just be like "house sounds" or "my eyes playing tricks on me" and give it no more than a curious glance. In my room there's a closet that all the pets like to stare into whenever they come in my room, and I'm just like "probably mice in there again"
I fear if I am ever haunted, I wouldn't even know it
#when I was living at my old apartment i heard someone crying in the middle of the night#i texted my roommate to ask if she was okay and she was like yeah why#i just assumed i imagined it and moved on#stuff would go missing in that apartment and i just chalked it up to my ADHD

I agree with this except that also I feel like every time I search for something nowadays, the webpages I look at are unreadable due to 1. ads making any article a nightmare to navigate or 2. Ai making it all mindless slop that is devoid of any human touch
The Algorithm is not the answer to this problem by any means, but I honestly don't know what IS the answer... aside from just people making sites for other people
I’m not even an anti-internet person like I love the internet, I just get so frustrated with the passive way people have become accustomed to using it now. not actively seeking things out or engaging with communities, just turning their brain off & letting the algorithm feed them whatever it wants. & I can’t help but feel like that’s partially to blame for the current state of things (anti-“woke” backlash is easier to digest if you turn your brain off when online)

i dont consider myself a 'fashion guru' by any means but one thing i will say is guys you dont need to know the specific brand an item you like is - you need to know what the item is called. very rarely does a brand matter, but knowing that pair of pants is called 'cargo' vs 'boot cut' or the names of dress styles is going to help you find clothes you like WAAAYYYY faster than brand shopping

Lovely people of tumblr, if I may speak with my librarian hat* on for a moment:
If you are in the US, you may be aware that librarians are Going Through It because some malicious people believe in fascism and have decided to make that our problem. Whether you are in the US or not, there is something you can do to help your local librarians out:**
Say something nice to us.
You can post on social media and tag your library, you can find the library’s main phone number and call, you can go in person, you can send a card (we display cards in our break room)! I guarantee you that you will make the day of the person you talk to, we will immediately go tell all our colleagues how lovely you were, and you will help us live to love and fight another day.
*it is a fetching piece of millinery in purple silk
**I propose we make this an international group project. Whether your librarians are going through it or not, we all appreciate a kind word.
#i'm going to do this#i mean at least parts of it#because i have really been looking for a way to get involved in my community#and I'm not really sure how to do that#but this seems very doable!
