Scarlet Elf Cups (Sarcoscypha coccinea) and Ruby Elf Cups (Sarcoscypha austriaca) (indistinguishable without microscopy) are one of the few Spring mushrooms that are also edible. They have a mild taste (when overcooked, can become flavourless). They can be gently pan-fried in a little oil/ butter or used in a stew, and they make a nice addition to pasta and rice dishes, or fried eggs.

If you're out looking for them, Elf Cups enjoy wet, muddy places (often close to a stream), and they grow on fallen twigs, rotting wood, under dead leaves but can be easily spotted because of their bright red color.

Mushrooms that can be found in March and April (Latvia and the area):

Xemophalia campanella; Strobilurus esculentus; Entoloma vernum; Strobilurus tenacellus; Lentinus poluporus; Dumontinia tuberosa; Sarcoscypha austriaca; Exidia saccharina; Lycoperdon pyriforme (in Spring, rather unusual); Gyromitra esculenta; Pseudoplectania nigrella.

awhile ago, like a couple yearsish, I sent a pic of a mushroom at my moms with my old account wondering what type it was and recently she sent me a picture of how big it grew and it got even hairier this year so I wanted to show it off to ya!

Was I able to tell you the species of the mushroom back then? 'Cause now I'm sure it's lion's mane (Hericium erinaceus).

Morchella conica

Morels have been a Holy Grail of mushrooms for me. They're pretty common, yet I could never spot one. I'm always in the wrong place or time for them. But my luck changed for the better this Spring (April 12, 2024)
